How was Vajpayee's policy of not crossing LoC 'stupid'? Like an all out war would have had no casualties.?
Not crossing the LoC is what got India widespread support and forever changed how India and Pakistan are seen internationally.
There was no guarantee that crossing the LoC completely would have changed the course of the war immediately. It was a threat used very well by India to apply pressure internationally. Not crossing the LoC meant that the Pakistanis were left high and dry and on their own. The main problem was that India had almost no success taking back the mountains initially till we tasted real success at Tololing. Once that fell, IA grew confident of rolling back the Pakistani ingress and that's how it played out.

When looking back at history. it's best to try and remember what the ground realities then were. Vajpayee and his team handled the situation masterfully and the Pakistanis went back humiliated
Never after that stupid action, did the Pakistanis ever get much support for their stand on Kashmir. Contrast that with how much criticism India faced on Kashmir before that.
Vajpayee doesnt deserve this opprobrium.
