Both sides have maintained some understanding about firing real bullets. Chinese soldier's are not armed too. If they are not armed and we ruthlessly massacre them then who will be the aggressor? Use guns were enemies have gun don't use gun where Chinese are not carrying one themselves.
Basic reason for that is both countries know the consequences of escalating the conflict.

No rounds in most rifle chambers barring a few. Those at the back do carry a rifle or two with mags, just in case situation gets hot. Esteemed poster and resident China+LAC expert made fun of it and also cross questioned on another thread. He called them 'Dandas' without bullets. When asked why IA didn't fire at PLA in Dokalam, there was no response from him. Ab tak toh dahi jama ke baith gaya hoga.

But it does look like from all the videos over the years, PLA chaps get physical only when indian side has no rifles in hand. maybe there is scope to create an SOP based on this, to avoid physical confrontation.
