Right now to ensure that China does not escalate the war to Indian high value targets and cities by lobbing the hundreds of Short Range Ballistic Missiles it possesses, the direct equivalent for India will be to sign some kind of a defence pact with the US (if they are willing) and then go and evict the PLA from all territories occupied by them including Aksai Chin.

There is no need for India in the short term to acquire any additional US equipment for this nor will it be feasible to acquire and train Indian pilots etc. on the use and integration of these weapon systems in the time available. But what it will do is cover India's vulnerability in the conventional escalation ladder that China has an advantage in and prevent China from that escalation. i.e. it will remain a border war where I believe Indian ground and air forces are better than evenly matched with the PLA and the PLAAF.

On the Chinese border India has been always reactive. This has been across successive Indian governments both of the Congress and BJP variety. This suggestion of some kind of a security arrangement with the US is IMO the quickest way to break this cycle of China acting and then India reacting.

Historically India has been against formal/semi formal security arrangements with the US by stating that India needs it's "strategic autonomy". But the fact of the matter is that whatever strategic autonomy India has does not prevent China from the constant salami slicing of Indian territory and Indian kinetic non-reaction to that salami slicing.
