Almost every SF battalion that has set foot in kashmir have an instance of a few hostage rescue operations being done. As you would've guessed 4 para and 9 para have conducted a hell lot of HR operations in Kashmir exclusively (not counting rest of the J&K in it).....in one such operation, 4 para had to be called in since the RR guys who went for rescueing the hostages were held hostage themselves.

They do not have a good track record in jungles..

I doubt paras could do a repeat of that operation.

their Capabilities have probably come down since 2016

This is an entirely different sector. And the men who died were signalsmen and armored men. Not infantrymen.

What would you consider hostage rescues? NSG has some fine hostage rescue ops.

but it seems like paras do therole of ghataks and nowadays basic infantry

NSG are a national level contingency force, they shouldn’t be getting involved in every Tom dick and Harry police job. It’s right that they’ve been reserved for only the worst level operations so far, they said they should’ve been employed more in JK instead of the Paras (EDI I will keep saying again and again). What’s the point in NSG having all their intervention kit if paras with their full length M4s and homemade plate carriers are going to launch frontal assaults in the daylight?

everything has watered down since the 80s, the Indian military are just a bunch of generalists now, there’s very few actual specialties that only some can do anymore. Everyone is a commando, everyone is a para trooper (all have their maroon berets don’t they?) everyone is an assaulter etc etc

NSG is the one force that’s been able to keep their mission rather undiluted but of course because of empire building and egos they are barely used and when they are used the esteemed IA generals b!tch and moan that the same job should’ve been given to an infantry battalion!
