Key strategic and diplomatic issues in one week

1. US will resume military supplies to Pakistan amounting to $650 million to upgrade their F-16 to F-16V level. This is a bad news for India where Biden Administration has gone back on its word to stop military supplies initiated by Trump Administration.

2. Chinese have withdrawn from Gogra and Hot Springs area (PP 15 & PP17). There is no military advantage or disadvantage for the either side, but a point of confrontation initiated by China in 2020 has been eliminated.

There are disadvantages of the American move to rearm Pakistan; that it will become belligerent again, although it has been calmed a bit for the last three years. India will have to speed up upgrade of the Su-30Mk1 and buy better and more versatile missiles for its fighters, sooner than later.

The Chinese withdrawal is settling a prestige issue for both the countries. Occupation or non occupation is a worthless issue in a desolate snow covered land. It takes away an issue from Indian opposition parties also.
What made Chinese to change their mind, two years after they stealthily occupied what I called the desolate heights; …guesses are too many but my guess is that the failed Chinese attempt to invade Taiwan and resulting in big loss of prestige for the Chinese only a month back initiated a rethink in Chinese President Xi’s mind. Keeping the LAC issue alive and not able to advance any further would add to the insult. Only a week back, a new commander of Chinese forces was appointed. My guess again is that he advised that with Indian Army posted in strength, no new stealth capture of additional area is possible. Hence, the best option was to settle the issue and withdraw from Gigra and Hot Springs posts.

That does not mean that India and China are friends again. No sir, it will take time to reset friendly relationship. But India has to be watchful.

Does IA have plans of mounting M-777s on trucks?

Would provide much needed firepower to our troops with added mobility.
M-777 is specifically made to be used as a lightweight field howitzer, easy to transport by road and air, with quick deployment and pack-up time. Truck mounting is counter-intuitive.

There are other truck-mounted howitzers being developed.

China just making it official that they don't agree with the LAC and want to enforce their version of where the border lies. Even the disengagement at PP15 is just a token gesture from China, as there is nothing to really disengage apart from a small-hut worth of structure on both sides.

This should be replied back in the same tone by MEA otherwise this will be akin to silently accepting the Chinese dominance.

Yes it is light weight but it’s loading mechanism to shove the shell in and push it all the way and then add powder to it is cumbersome. It requires two extra persons to do that. Hence its inventors BAE and Americans did not pay attention to it because battlefield missiles were the rulers.

Only mountainous countries with hilltop locations to position and fire it use it. It’sTitanium makes it very expensive. That is the only reason it is air lifted.

Mounting them on trucks makes them more road mobile and lethal given their light weight.

Kalyani's lightweight mounted howitzers or other SPA are nowhere near induction with only murmurs of inducting more K9 Thunders.

Just pointing out a decent use case given the lack of light SPA's in our inventory, a mounted M777 or Kalyani LH is a great gap filler till similar or better equipment makes its way in.

Afaik, the Kalyani lightweight howitzer in the same category as M777 is 1.5 tons heavier but they are still several tons lighter and more mobile than FH77B, Dhanush or other fancy toys we have. Truck mounted lightweight howitzers(M777) will remain more mobile and more lethal than a 'shoot and scoot' Bofors or a static deployed M-777.

But there's a tradeoff. The barrels of the M777 cannot handle more sustained firing shots than the heavier counterparts. You have to use M777 judiciously and not fire too many shells in order to preserve the lifespan of the barrel.
