They improved somewhat after the Korean war with Soviet help but then the Sino-Soviet split happened. In the Sino-Vietnamese War they only roughly broke even with second-rate PAVN units while the PAVN suffered 10:1 losses against the Americans. China's army severely lacked mechanization and mobile firepower.

It was after this shite performance in the Sino-Vietnamese war that the moderates started to reform & professionalize the military.

It's only by the 2010s that China became relatively more powerful than they were for example, in the mid 18th century.

This is good analysis. The General highlights importance of artillery which is quite right. I would like to use artillery on concentrated Chinese forces. But, I would want armour and infantry to roll through whole Tibet and reach Chinese mainland.
Chinese with a lot of stress on firepower probably wouldn't be so effective in Himalayas. Even though we used a lot of artillery in Kargil, it took infantry to dislodge the infiltrators. Lots of firepower without infantry in Himalayas might not be effective.

A big "IF", but if we breakthrough PLA lines in the mountains and get into Tibet, its a flat plateau and they can really bring to bear their arty/rocket forces and in serious numbers. Would mean steep escalation with massive IAF/PLAAF involvement and probably even cruise/ballistic missiles. No good options here and price to be paid in life/limb/treasure will be humongous! I hope CCP/PLA implodes and does the world a favor.
