Rafale in eastern sector will just be a good interceptor and nothing else, as it wont have the range and the load to hit china where it would hurt,

Sure, IAF has taken a base in West Bengal and they are smart, but also this is a same IAF which was about to pee its pants when it found out that Jaguar could not be used in Kargil and there was no fall back plan with them, They were running around like scared rabbits.
this is the same IAF which was using the MiG-29 and Su-30 MKI for more than a decade and suddenly realise that these can be used as Multi role platforms..such is the wonderful wisdom of IAF.

Rafale wll be useful on Eastern sector, but they would end up having role of Interceptors and Strike support missions, They would not be able to go deep in China as you predict.

Also its the same IAF which is perhaps the only air force where Mirage 2000 were grounded !! YES IAF has "clue" of whats happening, and yet Su-30 MKI does not have MAWS and there was no thought to put MAWS in the best Air superiority asset that IAF has.. Truly (in)competent

We are yet to chose the final assembly plant and in which plant will make components under make in India.Only then a batch of India specific prototypes will be send for trail , to see if any upgrades are needed.For now both army and air force want to reduce the chopper weight a little.

Then why kundankulam? Why should India pay so heavily for nuclear plant while it has abundant coal supply? Considering that india has so many priorities, why not use coal instead of uranium? There is some other deal underhand

India is Importing coal from countries Like south Africa & Australia because most of the Coal in India are of Inferior quality and Power-plants designed (with the help of foreigners )need Good quality Coal , Those power-plants which are already operational and not designed for Indian quality coal can not be modified to use Indian coal. They will have to continue to use imported coal

Kundankulam is not FBR. It is a commercial reactor. No fast breeder reactor has been commercially proven. They are still in prototype and testing stage.
India needs high quality coal for smelting iron, not power plants. Only a few plants made under corrupt congress needs such coal. South Africa even uses Indian type coal for coal liquefaction in addition to power generation.
Water consumption by nuclear plants are so heavy that most of them are done near oceans or big water bodies. Kundankulam is using sea water. Coal can also use the same, if that was the case.

India has 1.5 to 2 lakh tons of uranium reserves which is 2-2.7% of world uranium reserves. If world can produce 70k tons, India can produce 2k tons too (2.7% of 70k). That should be enough for making PHWR reactors for both plutonium and power.


Ok, it is true that I didn't like FGFA but I am going unnecessarily off topic. Sorry for derailing thread again. Sigh!

Is it really true about Sukhoi not making up the qaulity issue in this one as well? Havnt heard about how they liked it(the ones that went there).

If India can make LCH and Dhruv there is no reason it cannot make its own LUH. This guarantees Make in India. A production license for Arrius engines can be signed anytime to power indigenous Indian technology. I think this is what GOI is thinking about Su-57 as well. So much is going into Kaveri tie-ups for uprated engines. Make in India is the government policy above all else.

Ladies and Gentlemen , I present to you Bort 511 blue, the 9th flying prototype of the Su-57/PAK-FA.
It is one of the phase 2 series.

This aircraft had spread its its wings for the first time on Aug 6th at Knaaz in Komsomolsk on Amur. Technically this is the 11 th Pak-fa prototype and the 10th flyworthy one. It had its first flight before Bort 510 which as far we know is undergoing some last minute mods to its engine bays.

Bort 511 sports a dual tone deep grey dark blue digital paint scheme. She also has the full electro optical 101 KS Atoll suite- KS-U missile warning approach system, KS-V IRST employing the revolutionary QWIP technology KS-O DIRCM which is a hardkill countermeasures system for IR guided air to air and surface to air missiles. Bort 511 is also hauling two big 2000 l drop tanks . This is to increase its ferry range and allowed the aIR craft to make less no of stops on its ferry flight from KnAAPO to Zhukovsky.

Bort 511 also seems to sport the full N036 Byelka MIRES comprising of the nose mounted N036-1-01 radar with 1552 TR elements,the cheek areas arrays N036B-1-01 having 404 TR elements and the tail stinger installed areas unit. This serves both as a surveillance and tracking radar,a FCR and an ECM unit. From the pics it is still not clear whether this aircraft has the wing leading edge slat mounted L band aesa arrays.

Phase 2 birds have the following improvements over Phase-1-

1. Significant rework of the structural airframe and other load bearing elements . The fuselage wings and control elements have been beefed up structurally so as to enable them to sustain more Gs and higher stress loads.

2. An increase in the percentage of CFC composites as part of the wetted area and also as a portion of the empty structural weight. This phase also uses exotic composite materials besides the usual CfC.

3. The engine cowlings are manufactured from high temperature resistant PMC .As you can see there are no bare metal engine surface on these birds apart from the swivelling nozzles. This reduces the beam and aft RCS.

4. Presence of the cheek aesa arrays.

5. The earlier bleed and spill air intakes have been replaced with new stealthy mesh coverings. The gill air intake on the sides of the intake nacelles are now wedge shaped . This too reduces the radar signature.

6. The main weapon bay doors have more zig zag serrations compared to the phase 1 birds.

7. The leading edge of the main landing gear doors have more serrations. This is another measure to reduce Rcs.

8. Phase 2 birds have partial to complete Ram treatment of the fuselage and wing surfaces.
