7.62 x 39 round weighs around 16.3 g ==> 30 x 16.3g = 489 g apart from mag weight
7.62 x 51 weighs around 25.4 g ==> 20 x 25.4g = 508 g
30 x 25.4g = 762g

weight is slightly an issue but not that much.

that's why the requirement went from 7.62 x 51 into 7.62 x 39. hence army is opting for ak-203.

that OFB manufactured rifle (7.62 x 51 NATO) with 20 rounds might be for competition to replace SCAR-H and FALs etc. since SCAR-H is used by special forces. not by regular army.

there really isn't any other option for army except for AK-series.

however MCIWS is an alternative. but army babus killed it exactly the way they killed arjun tank. " shOULd do MOre. sHOULd BE inTERCHAngeaBLE witH boTH 5.56mm & 7.62mm but LESS weighT anD cheAP anD shOULD be EASy to ManufaCTURE THAN AK-47s"

MCIWS was about to go in mass production in 2018. killed in 2019 for russian mal along with 464 T-90S
300 g isn't slight specially when you have to carry it and aim and shoot also the size of the magazine will increase, the cartridge aren't of same size either.. creating ergonomic issue.

The concept behind MCIWS was to have rifle that can be used to fire different rounds with change of barrel magazine etc. Well that's been offered by mutliple vendors so mciws was bound to fail in anycase.

There are many option for army other than AK. We can ask the vendors like IWI Sig or caracal to provide 7.62 AK / 5.56 NATO /7.62 NATO round to be fired by same rifle with change of barrel/magazine.

300 gm per magazine is small. But remember each NATO soldier carry 5-6 magazines on average for 5.56*45 mm. That translates into an increased weight of 1.5-1.8 kg of weight.

However in our cases Indian soldiers do not mind 1.5-1.8 kg of extra weight. This is because every piece of equipment he carries be it Insas rifles, to BPJs to hemet etc. is overweight compared to NATO standards. Hence extra weight is not a serious issue for Indian army soldiers. But high recoil can become a concern.
Remember SLR was rejected not because it carried 7.62*51 mm round. The main concern was the rifle itself was heavy and big, had no optic to match its higher range, and most importantly other countries were moving to 5.56*45 mm round.

U.S. Special Ops Forces Getting Lightweight, More Lethal .338 NM Ammunition

U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) will receive lightweight machine guns that fire the .338 Norma Magnum (NM) round which is lighter and delivers 4x the punch of a 7.62 bullet at longer ranges.
xxx
The colonel said that shooters are seeing better effects on target from the .338NM than from the .50 caliber. There’s better penetration and accuracy. “We’re killing, not just suppressing the target, Babbitt said.

A .50 caliber machine gun or the M2 can weigh nearly 90 pounds but the prototypes they’re seeing for the Lightweight Medium Machinegun (LMG-M) are tipping the scales at 22-25 pounds.

“What you’re doing is putting .50 caliber effects in an M240B,” Babbitt said, in reference to the current medium 7.62mm machine gun.

The colonel said some of the test shooters are requesting a single shot switch on the machine gun because they’re hitting the target on the first shot.

And the velocity of the round is doing more damage than the current medium machine gun can manage.

CAR-816 and all is good but the IA is not procuring them on time, Arad will be better but is not offered, Galil has no chance. CAR-816 will win but is is 10.5” barrelled gun with no M-LOK rails.

I feel one single platform with different barrel lengths should be considered for ease of use, we can easily get a sweet deal with Israel if we buyout IWI Arad, we’ll buy some 1.2 Million IWI Arads of different barrel lengths if we ditch AK-203 AK-103M.
