On dec 31st trump signed some law with 1.5 billion $ funding to support Indian Ocean region and strengthen partnership with India.

That must have been discussed in that cabinet meeting, after which his statements came.

If Trump thinks "these countries" are taking advantage of America, he is welcome to renegotiate or cut off those trade ties. No one forces anyone to trade and no one gains disproportionately more in any barter. If I sell one apple for one $, he gets one apple, I get one $. If he thinks it's not a fair price, he can keep his dollar, I will keep my apple. He wants people to send their armies to defend American interests, in exchange for the fact that America trades with us? he's not doing a favor by trading with us. American people's lifestyle is subsidized by low cost production in Asia. India isn't even an exporting nation. He saw what happened after his Harley Davidson tantrum. There were hardly a few hundred units being sold in India anyway, and for that petty amount, he decided to embarrass Modi. No one gave a shit, and now Jawa has been launched. No one will buy Harley now.

Americans have been forcing India to deploy troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, while not stopping the sale of arms to Pakistan or Naxals and anti-India NGOs. In any case, even if these were stopped, India will not deploy in Iraq. The invasion of Iraq was a big loss to India. Iraq was supplying cheap oil to India, Saddam kept the Sunnis in check and their intel helped Indian intel catch anti-India Sunni terrorists. After the invasion of Iraq, we took a hit in oil prices, the Sunnis started leaking out like mosquitoes and India lost its foothold in the middle east.

Calling for strengthening of diplomatic, economic, and security ties with India, the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act (ARIA) allocates a budget of $1.5 billion over a five-year period to enhance cooperation with America’s strategic regional allies in the region. The new law cites “China’s illegal construction and militarization of artificial features in the South China Sea and coercive economic practices”, and mandates actions for “countering China’s influence to undermine the international system”.

The Act notes “the increased presence throughout Southeast Asia of the Islamic State and other international terrorist organizations that threaten the United States”. The law states that US “recognizes the vital role of the strategic partnership between the United States and India in promoting peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region” and “calls for strengthening and broadening of diplomatic, economic, and security ties between the United States and India”.

It reiterates US commitment to all “bilateral and security agreements and arrangements” between the two countries, including the New Framework for the United States-India Defense Relationship, and the United States-India Defense Technology and Trade Initiative. Stressing the “designation of India as a major defense partner, which is unique to India,” the new law states that this designation “elevates defense trade and technology cooperation between the United States and India to a level commensurate with the closest allies and partners of the United States”.
