Unfortunately we have not laid much stress on sniper training and neither do we have proper sniper rifles. The Dragunov we christen as a 'sniper rifle' is actually a DMR. We need to now quickly set up a sniper training school on the lines of the US Marine Corps Scout Sniper School to select and train troops from Infantry battalions.Sir, how long does it take to train a sniper? I don’t assume that just because we receive these rifles, they will be used right away. The need for quality snipers is a crucial requirement for the LoC. does the army possess enough such trained snipers?
Also, the qualified snipers themselves will need some time adjusting to this new weapons system.
A two-month course for unit marksmen will put them through physical training and firing-range practice every day. In addition, there can be "battle games" that teach the skills snipers need in the field. Classroom time is needed to learn the principles of range estimation, windage, barometric pressure, and deployment and tactics. So yes, a minimum of two to three months would be needed to make a marksman into an expert sniper. And we need to start NOW!
