Restoring ceasefire needs statesmanship, not brinkmanship: Lt Gen M M Naravane

http://indianexpress.com/article/in...not-brinkmanship-lt-gen-m-m-naravane-5080953/

The Army Commander said that Pakistan is like a mirror on the wall. “We need to look at it and not make the same mistakes, particularly in light of growing radicalisation and intolerance within our own society over mundane issues,” he said.

He emphasised that India should avoid making the same mistakes Pakistan made in the course of its history.
Recalling the words of Asma Jehangir, noted Pakistani human rights activist who passed away recently, Lt Gen Naravane said she was once asked on a visit to India why she was talking about secularism and democracy when both do not exist in Pakistan. “She was disarming in her reply when she said, ‘I request you don’t compete with us over our weaknesses’. I believe that is where our strength lies. In the core values as enshrined in the preamble of our Constitution — justice, equality, liberty, fraternity — as part of a sovereign, secular, democratic republic. In short, we are all that Pakistan is not,” he said.

Addressing a seminar on “Emerging geo-strategic manifestations in Pakistan — Implications for India” at Panjab University, the Army Commander said that both India and Pakistan have been aggressively pursuing a policy of unrelenting tit-for-tat for the last few years. “But we need to analyse what will be the end result of this approach,” he said. “Kashmir still remains far from normal despite the strategy of matching response being followed by both nations. Be that as it may, there is no shying away from the fact that a lasting peace can only be found at the negotiating table.”

That's complete and unadulterated bullshit!! There's no question of talks with a gun pointing at one's head. That's exactly what Pak wants - to force us at gunpoint (by indulging in a proxy war through their terror mercenaries) to come to the negotiating table and discuss Kashmir on their terms.

His utterance is unbelievable! Either the General has lost his marbles or the Cong has promised him a seat in the next elections.

It doesn't necessarily have to be either of those things. The army like all institutions, is a microcosm of our society; so one is bound to have varied and often widely differing views. The respected Lt. Gen is expressing his views, some of which may or may not find traction amongst other officers and jawans in the Indian army.

That said, let us not judge the man without verifying and listening to his actual comments instead of what's printed in what passes for news reports these days.

Good someone is making pakis to pay for their terrorists support.
Day before yesterday 2 kashmiri policemen killed by islamic radicals
Its always reciprocal attack...if Pakistan attacks us thru terrorists there will be equal or more casualties on their side from us in Baluchistan obviously..teaching them the cost of using non state actors

In a first since ceasefire, army uses artillery in Uri sector

While the current spate of progressing truce infringement at Uri denotes an ambitious start to pressures with Pakistan hanging in the balance of Control (LoC) in territories north of the Pir Panjal mountain run, it is the first run through in almost 15 years that the Army has utilized field ordnance in this segment.

As per official information, there have been 411 truce infringement on the LoC so far this year. Of these, lone eight have been in 15 Corps Zone, north of the Pir Panjal go. This truce infringement, in Rampur and Uri in North Kashmir this month, saw the utilization of 105 mm cannons field weapons, in spite of the fact that for a brief period. This is the first occasion when that big guns firearms have opened up in that part since India and Pakistan consented to a truce on the LoC in November 2003.

Big guns is utilized if all else fails by the Army, after every single individual weapon and mortars held with the infantry have been utilized.

Regions on the LoC south of the Pir Panjal, in the 16 Corps Zone, saw mounted guns discharging, including 155 mm Bofors firearms, after the pressure amongst India and Pakistan raised after the surgical strikes in September 2016.

As per official information, the Pakistani Army utilized substantial gauge weapons, to be specific 120 mm mortar, on the LoC against the Indian Army five times this year.

Official sources disclosed to The Indian Express that while the circumstance in Uri is decreasing down towards commonality, they were dubious about the future direction in the territory. The more elevated amount of pressure on the LoC in North Kashmir, sources stated, is directed by the low volume of snowfall got this winter, other than Pakistan’s urgency to expand the draining positions of experienced activist authorities in the Kashmir Valley.

I would say if MI is deployed then they can transport a company towards lower heights and surround the positions from all side of the feature blocking supply routs but then there will be danger of pakistani arty sitting away and targetting Indian position, and you can launch counter by deploying your arty.
where as on top you can keep banging them with drones and dhruvs.

Iaf must be kept on alert to thwart back any PAF attempts to take down Indian positions
To take out their positions or dumps and to counter their artillery we need a combat UAV with brimstone missile or spear3.
Brimstone has 40-60 km standoff range,so we need is good uav which can withstand harsh high altitude and cold weather.
Wiki says we are buying IAI Eitan which has a service ceiling of 45k feet and armed too, we need more of these.

IAI Eitan would be force multiplier for preemptive strike to neutralize air defence
But I am more concerned about how to transport and station troops near their position. The risk of high toll is there.

Spontaneous imports help India mantain the tag of World s largest arms importer. Army/ IAF can do equally well without gold plated drones or missiles. There must be products with Drdo which are equally effective.

From the article:
He declared: “They said that India has killed many of our soldiers, we will take revenge for it after we bury our dead today.

At last morons accepted that many of their Mard-E-Momin soldiers are killed by India.. so they are firing back to take revenge..
Amrit pikar nahi aaye hai ye sale..
Good to catch them lying about civilians being killed and to see them getting emotional sign of an amateur unprofessional army.

Yes there are and a lot of things can be retrofitted if need arises but the point is whether it should be done only when the need arises or kept ready and tested. Taking on En positions and holding them across AGPL is tougher due to terrain. No En position is below 4000m.
