SOD is a command element. It is to test out the joint command concept across the entire SOF forces. SOD is supposed to function with 3000 soldiers across three different unitss. While the units will train together for jointness they will be different units (SF, Marcos, Garud)

That artical talks of a seperate 200 odd man unit where selection is open to all three SOF units but it will be one organic unit for independent taskinfs with their own intelligence, logistics and air support.

Yes instead of the tape from 20/30 years ago they have an attachment. NSG has had them on thr MP5s and Sigs for a very long time. I.e both mags pointing in the same direction
