Exactly 49 years ago on this day, history was created when four diminutive Gnats took off from Kolkata airport and shot down two Sabres over the Boyra salient . A third severely damaged F-86 limped back across the IB and crashed in then East Pakistan .
The reputation of 22 squadron was forged in the short intense action packed aerial skirmish over the lush green fields of Boyra. They earned the battle honour Sabre Slayers.
Fl Lt M A Ganapathy , Flt Lt R A Massey , FG Off Donald Lazarus and Fg officer SF Spares recieved their baptism by fire and earned their spurs on this fateful day back in 71.
The entire operation was coordinated by Fg Officer KM Bagchi who operated from the ATC in Kolkata.
Bagchi was from 253 SU based at AF station Jaffarpore in Barrackpore, my hometown. 253 SU operating P-30M early warning and surveillance radars of Soviet origin was the controlling ADDC air defense and direction centre . This unit picked up the marauding Sabres and provided GCI guided control intercept to our boys.
