While its a good capability to have, hardly qualifies under counter munitions. Spice 2000 is a big beast...same sort of size as a decent UAV. To talk about a true counter munition capability like Iron Dome you need to able to target something as small as a 60mm mortar shell.

But its still admirable considering it was originally intended for point-defence against aircraft. Furthermore, if I'm not wrong, most of the munitions used for SEAD/DEAD roles are of comparable size to SPICE-2000

Isn't that going to be uber expensive. Mortar shell are cheap compared to the counter missile.
Trying to stop mortar or artillery shell could be a recipe for bankruptcy.

Countering PGM works because PGM are expensive for enemy and dangerous for us because of precision and enemy can lob them from safe distance.

But in case of mortar or artillery shell since enemy machine are much closer they must be destroyed on ground rather then trying to stop each mortar .

I'm not suggesting we should come with an Iron Dome equivalent. Just pointing out that to label Akash as an equivalent capability was disingenuous. Then again, not all PGM's are the size of a SPICE 2000...the Porks for sure don't have anything on that level. For a proper counter PGM system (if we are aiming for it) we need to think smaller, like SDB size (100kg class) which are the most dangerous.

The Israeli's came up with Iron Dome because they had to protect their civilians. Its expensive for sure but for them its a price they are willing to pay. For us, a system like Akash is protecting high value assets in air fields. So we have to calculate also

DRDO is working on a different strategy for mortars, They are working on putting AK 630 on a truck..

AK630

End result will look something like this... phalanx CIWS..

You want to talk about expensive...those Phalanx C-RAM rounds are US $12 EACH (cause they have a smart fuse)...the thing fires off its entire 2000rd drum in seconds...that's a lot of money!!

In all likelihood by the time this system would be ready for induction IA budget will be having bigger budgets...

It they have the tech then it can be downsized for counter munition use... QRSAM will excel in it maybe, as point defense won't need too long range.

I have always wondered, why haven't these things completely replaced anti-aircraft artillery by now!? ...or atleast why aren't all AAAs mounted on a truck and controled by a joystick?!

It's not the munition that has to be downsized...its the radar and targeting system that has to be sensitized to detect and engage smaller targets while being able to declutter background biological hits. Not so easy.

Why C-RAM not common? Its far more expensive to acquire than a comparable AAA like Oerlikon 35mm and also much shorter range and narrower engagement envelope.

Answer is simple, since we don’t have a expeditionary force doctrine we don’t put everything on wheels and aircraft’s.

Still, being mobile is a great advantage... you can shoot & scoot, relocate wherever needed etc.

Anyway why aren't they remotely operated with joysticks like an RCWS? That would keep the crews safer.
It seems that in this case (ie, not automatic C-RAM), experienced operators will vastly outperform inexperienced rookies against counter-maneuvering targets.

Which 60mm mortar shell is gong to target airbases 150-200km inside Indian territory.

Israelis have critical civil and military infra worth billions spread across just a narrow territory(its widest point 114 km, At its narrowest point, however, this is reduced to just 15 km). Palestine etc dont have much infra to care for and hence not affected by Israeli response. They prefer bodybags of children. Hence imperative for Israelis to protect themselves from smallest of projectiles.

India-Pak share long boundaries with a lot of depth. Critical infra is deep inside. Both have some major cities like Amritsar and Lahore within Artilley/Rocket range. So any attack on our major civil areas will be responded with much higher intensity by us. Pakis dont have other alternate cities to depend on unlike us.

Also most Pakistani cities are much closer to boundary. In contrast Indian financial/tech/industrial hubs are deep inside. So protection from small munitions will be very expensive for our limited resources nor will these small munitions reach them.

We have build lot of bunkers for border populations.

thedailystar.net/world/asia/14000-bunkers-be-built-protect-jk-residents-1516594

Resources need to be spent on
1) ABM, S400, MRSAM, Akash, QRSAM
2) We are yet to build Hardened Air Shelters(HAS) in North Eastern bases, Phalodi, A&N etc. Sukhois have no HAS at all bcoz of large size.
3) NE region just got Akash SAMs(they didnt even have Pechoras). Other 15 Pechora squadrons yet to be replaced.
4) Replacing older radars with Arudhra/Ashwini to achieve total coverage over Indian landmass and A&N etc
.
Protection from Aircraft, cruise missiles(Babur), Guided Bombs(Spice type 1000-2000lb) is enough to begin with for us. A good layered defence will prevent aircrafts from breaching too deep or getting in good AoA position required to launch weapons rendering small munitions useless or inaccurate.

The Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) handed over the second airborne warning plane, Netra, to the Indian Air Force on Wednesday.

The indigenously-built aircraft was handed over to Western Air Command chief, Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar, at the Bathinda Air Base in Punjab.

The Netra, an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEWC) aircraft, had played a stellar role during the Balakot air strikes that had been carried out by the IAF in February this year. It provid ..

Japan is selling 100+ F-15 Js to buy F-35 Bs. I think we should buy them with quality assured, and the best part is if bought; we then have 15 to 20 years to perfect the AMCA and maybe buy SU-57s also. As a US ally and having a Boeing facility for servicing, we wont have a problem in the service life and buying weapons specific for the fleet if bought. The chief of the Boeing company India division, President - Mr. Pratyush Kumar will now lead the F-15 program in the states. So they are very serious about the fleet replenishment of the Indian Air Force.
