According to the latest media report, Russia has offered India more air frames of Mig-29 which with upgraded UPG Upgrade package will cost less than $40 Million a unit to bulk up fleet force due to the shortage of fighter jets because of delays in modernization and series of the retirement of older jets. Previous media reports had put the fleet offered at 21 air frames which were inspected by the IAF team which had visited Russia. But as per latest media report, Russia has offered India, 34 Mig-29UPG which also includes 21 bare borne air frames which were never flown and 13 Mig-29SMT which are barely 10 years old and were manufactured in 2008. Russia has offered to upgrade all 34 Mig-29s with new engines and new radars as per current upgraded Mig-29UPG operated by Indian Air Force. According to the industrial sources close to idrw.org, IAF has submitted a positive report and deal might be concluded by end of this year and jets might start arriving by the end of 2020. It is not clear yet how many aircraft will be finally brought but all the jets have been inspected by a team of experts of IAF and according to them air frames can be used for next 20-25 years. IAF operates over 62 Mig-29UPG which have been upgraded to UPG standard and are now capable of mid-air refueling and have been upgraded with New Zhuk-ME radar, new RD-33 series 3 turbofan engines, Secure datalink system, improved maintenance, Weapons load increased to 4,500 kg, Improvement in the air to ground missions. IAF is also procuring 18 additional Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet in kit form from Russian manufactures to be assembled at India by HAL. IAF is also keen to upgrade Air-to-Air missiles inventory of the Su-30MKI with new upgraded next Generation of weapons with latest Russian, European, and Indian Aerial weapons.

At 40million + prices 34 mig29 upgrade will cost
1320 million $ .

For 1320 million we can get 40+ lca mk1. Which can be built very soon as lines are already running and later they can be upgraded to mk1a standard with aesa and long range weaponry.

Govt should just order 40 more mk1 and 40 more mk1a . Order 36 more rafale and be done with it. Far more important to upgrade weaponry to derby IR. Astra mk2 and sfdr. Focus on su30 upgrade .

We are not interested in LCA as it is too small. It also has USA engine which makes India uncomfortable. We want MWF and LCA is only a stop gap measure.

We can't simply order 40 more LCA as it currently is merely a plane to develop Indian MIC rather than a plane which India needs

And India needs a 1980s build mig29? Mwf will come by 2027 till then lca can fill the gap. It's small but it can shoot down all paki plane once mk1a gets aesa+ derby ER and later sfdr.

1980s or not, it is irrelevant. India has its own facilities for overhauling and repairing Mig29. So, it will have very limited expense to India. But it will also offer immediate boost to number of planes India has. Considering that it will cost just a $1 billion dollar for 30+ planes, it is too small an amount to fuss over. Even if we use it for just 10 years, it will coat us only about 3 million a year of Capital cost.

It is worth the low price

Wiser after Balakot, India orders missiles worth $700 million from Russia
Order includes close to 300 short-range air-to-air missiles, the R-73, and 400 medium-range air-to-air guided missiles, the RVV-AE.

New Delhi: After the Balakot strike and the dogfight with the Pakistani air force in February, India is looking to increase its stockpile of missiles with the Modi government ordering weaponry worth about $700 million for the Indian Air Force from Russia.

These include air-to-air missiles with an extended range as well air-to-surface missiles, ThePrint has learnt.

Highly placed sources said close to 300 short-range air-to-air missiles, the R-73, and 400 medium-range air-to-air guided missiles, the RVV-AE, also known as the R-77, have been ordered.

The R-77 is the Russian counterpart to the US medium-range AIM-120 AMRAAM missile. The American make was unsuccessfully used by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to target Indian Su-30 MKIs on 27 February, a day after the IAF strikes on Balakot.

These missiles are designed to arm the Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi aircraft.

The order, meant to boost the IAF’s capability, also includes a radar-busting missile, the X-31, said the sources.

Sources said Russia has also offered to help India for future orders with missiles with ranges longer than the ones it currently possesses.

According to Russian Tactical Missiles Corporation, the developer and producer of most of the Russian air-to-air missiles, the R-73’s range is 30 km. The range of its latest version, the RVV-MD, is 40 km.

It’s the same case with the R-77, which can hit targets at a distance of up to 80 km, while its latest version, the RVV-SD, can go up to 110 km.

Russia is currently offering its partners globally the short-range air-to-air RVV-MD missiles, medium-range air-to-air RVV-SD missiles, long-range air-to-air RVV-BD missiles, and medium-range air-to-air RVV-AE (R-77) missiles.

Integrating other missiles — for instance, the Israeli Derby air-to-air missiles — with the Su-30 will require permission from Russia, said the sources.

“Russia and India can jointly implement the programme of modernisation of the IAF’s air-to-air missiles. All the requirements of the Air Force can be discussed and met. The work could start as soon as possible once the formal request is made,” added the sources.

This is probably hafta being asked by Russia for permission.

IAF is also buying Israeli Derby ER missiles for the same purpose IIRC.

Except it won't be immediate. First we'd have to sign a deal and then Russia or we will upgrade airframes . This will take time . How much time it took to upgrade our 66 mig29 . Expect Atleast half the time to upgrade these older airframes.

Last time we signed contract to upgrade our mig29 in 2011 . Till 2017 all mig29 were still not upgraded.
Don't expect more mig 29 upg before 2-3 years at least.

India should take mig29 and su30 even if old airframes.

Increasing numbers is critical as war is near.

I agree that logic does not work with any MoD agency till they continue to be tools of big time kickbacks and corruption money !
ISRO has its own culture, discipline, work ethos and a sense of dedication. They have developed that over so many years under admirable and competent leadership. They take pride in being a class in themselves. They have built an "institution" rather than being a social justice employment agency. They partner with the best institutions of the world like NASA rather than priding in cultivating "Bhoot Mirchi".

That is what makes the difference.
They were also woefully behind world leading tech standards for the first 30-40 years, much more expensive than bigger scale operations and took ages to deliver milestones (remember how long it took to get solid fuel tech right)

Thankfully nobody followed your advice and shut down ISRO 20 or 30 years back in favour of cheaper, more immediately available "phoren maal"

Three Russian Air to Air Missiles which actually can be game changer by overwhelming means are... RVV BD [R-37M] Range :300-400 KM RVV SD [R-77-1 Exp] :110 KM RVV MD [R-74 Exp] Range :40 KM If an old Mig-21 can take down a F-16 with older missiles, think what these can do.

If these three can be future arsenal of Super Sukhois and Migs, in case of Mirage-2000 and Jaguars , for short to medium range engagement we get 1) MICA (80 km range) 2) ASRAAM (50 km range)

Derby is not really a great missile. Moreover, India can use Astra instead. I don't really see why you would call it extortion. Russian missiles are not inferior in any way

If we sign it quickly, it will be completed in 3-4 years. Russian can upgrade 15 planes a year.

These three indigenous projects are 1) Astra Mk 2 will have 100 km range 2) We recently tested SFDRJ propelled platform, which hopefully will be a Desi Meteor . 3) And third project, which came as a surprise to me, will be BrahMos A2A with 300+ km range , purely AEW&CS killer

Sorry if reposted. So IAF has started using Kolkata Airport, Andal Airport(aka Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport), and Guwahati. I think Guwahati was always a military airport with Aircraft shelters and Akash SAMs deployed. So don't know what was so important to specifically mention it.

Last time they were used was during 1971 war. However they are pretty far from China except for Guwahati.

IAF frontline fighters fly at civilian airports
TNN | May 5, 2019, 06.00 AM IST
Kolkata: Some of them may have watched it on television but for most, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness live takeoffs and landings of Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30 MKI air superiority fighter aircraft while they waited for their flights at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Wednesday and Thursday.

As part of a unique exercise, IAF’s Eastern Air Command carried out fighter operations from civilian airports under its area of responsibility for two days. “This was done to prepare for any eventuality. While Su-30 MKIs used the Kolkata and Guwahati airports, Hawks operated from Andal. The aim was to validate the fighter operations procedure, familiarise the crew and pilots about the airports and co-ordinate with civil agencies for such operations. On both days, day and night operations were carried out. By conducting such operations, IAF expands its options during emergencies when more space may be required,” a senior IAF official said.

The Kolkata and Guwahati airports were used extensively during the 1971 Indo-Pak War when a large number of IAF aircraft operated in the eastern sector. The airport at Andal was not operational then. IAF has five air bases at Hasim-ara, Bagdogra, Kalaikunda, Panagarh and Barrackpore. Of these, Barrackpore operates helicopters. A major concern for any air force is finding alternatives if any of its bases is destroyed (or its runway damaged) in war. IAF has also practised landing frontline fighter and transport aircraft on highways.

Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, SASO, EAC, expressed satisfaction and conveyed that the exercise had achieved all its aims. “Such training gives us the flexibility to shift operating base if the need arises,” he said, emphasising operating from Kolkata as it is vital for maritime operations in the Bay of Bengal region.

The missile in question is the I - Derby variant.

The new seeker is lighter and more compact than its predecessor, thus clearing valuable space which has been used by the missile designers to increase the propulsion system by adding a second mode (kick), accelerating the missile at the terminal phase of the flight. This new addition increases the range of the I-Derby ER beyond 100 km., significantly more than its current “short/medium” range capability.
To equip these missiles to the Su 30 MKI, you need Russian permission.

Integrating other missiles — for instance, the Israeli Derby air-to-air missiles — with the Su-30 will require permission from Russia, said the sources.
This order will bridge the gap and give a hafta to the Russians. We need to have their OK for the missile integration.

“Russia and India can jointly implement the programme of modernisation of the IAF’s air-to-air missiles. All the requirements of the Air Force can be discussed and met. The work could start as soon as possible once the formal request is made,” added the sources.
