Procurements are fine, but what are they going to be armed with? The R-77 that we have and supposedly Russia's answer to the American AMRAAMs and similar Chinese missiles, has a range of only 80km!!

However, along with the induction of the Astra, the IAF is also currently integrating the Israeli I-Derby Extended Range missile on the SUs and the long-range Meteor missile. Also, India's air strike capabilities would be significantly enhanced with the Astra's induction.

Modifications needed to integrate these missiles with the additional SUs we're getting will take time. This needs to be speeded up.

Atleast US made weapons will be top notch. And US is not going to sit out like the Kargil War, they will take advantage of the situation like the Israelis did in 99.

We have always been adaptable . 1971 treaty with Soviet Union was adaptation against USA.
Today similar treaty may be adaptation against china.

The worst and most asinine idea - to buy more older generation planes when we are inducting latest Rafales and Tejas.

All of the following options are superior to this.

1. Order 30 used Armée de l'Air Rafales - all could be fitted with India Specific Enhancements that have already been developed and integrated. These could be delivered very quickly maybe by 2021 end.

2. Exercise option for 36 more new Rafales - Dassault can build 3 a month no problem. It will take Dassault until 2024/25 to deliver all 72.

3. Initially lease 30 French Rafales without upgrade - while Dassault delivers the new ones. We can get the aircraft immediately. We did this with the first 2 SEPECAT Jaguar sqdns. This way we could have 2 more Rafale sqds operational in 1 year.

4. Order another 30 Tejas Mk1A to be delivered without affecting delivery of existing 83. I feel HAL should be able to do it since they have mastered production.
