US intelligence believed China was intending to build a “permanent military presence” in the tiny African nation of Equatorial Guinea. Such a facility would be significant as it would give China its first base on the Atlantic Ocean.

This would mean “Chinese warships would be able to rearm and refit opposite the East Coast of the US—a threat that is setting off alarm bells at the White House and Pentagon,” The Wall Street Journal reported.

This is awesome news. For those who don't know, this project plans to drill a tunnel starting from Siachen basecamp to reach Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), straight under the mighty Himalayas for at least a length of 15 km.

Although it seems as of now, it is a feasibility test. If it does take place, it will take at least 10 years minimum to complete, and will be the most ambitious and massive engineering feat in the whole world.

Although it seems as of now, it is a feasibility test. If it does take place, it will take at least 10 years minimum to complete, and will be the most ambitious and massive engineering feat in the whole world.

It will be totally an engineering marvel, the world will remember us for this feat.

As you said it is a feasibility test, the project is super tough in nature but not impossible.

It will be totally an engineering marvel, the world will remember us for this feat.

As you said it is a feasibility test, the project is super tough in nature but not impossible.

The question comes, is it even worth it ? A multi-billion dollar project located at such a remote place that connects a place equally barren and remote ? It will be a purely strategic project, sure, but other than that there will be absolutely no use of this massive piece of infrastructure.

Even if we are able to make this project, there is still a strong chance DBO will fall pretty easily in a Chinese armored thrust in Depasng/DBO.

It might be better to utilize the money to build Leh-Manali railway connectivity or improve infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh. At least we can harvest timber and water resources in Arunachal Pradesh.

Timber from Arunachal Pradesh was used to make railway track sleepers all over India before the concrete sleepers came to style.

are u sure ? , i think its just 1 tunnel at saser la pass .

Tunnel from Siachen basecamp is a bit exaggeration and oversimplification on my part, but the length of the tunnel will depend on what Army wants.

The green line is below the snow line, which means even in winter, it will be accessible with minimal maintenance. The blue line is above snow line, and in winter it is basically blocked under meters of snow, and the light blue line is glaciers.

We at least need a tunnel under the glaciers because you cannot maintain a metalled-road on glaciers. The minimal length is 9 km of tunnel straight under the glaciers. However ideal will be to also tunnel the blue line, which is above snow line and will be anything between 15-19 km.

thats the sasar la pass with the glacier , IMHO u only need tunnel across 1-2 km.

wonder whats really the point of this all weather tunnel / road ?

looks to my stupid eyes like it will only allow chinese in and cut off siachen more easily .
