I would agree with that, except I really don't think that's possible, because America would never let them get that, considering they are already under its protection. I think they even have an agreement to that effect, if I'm not mistaken.

They could only go down that path if they started moving away from the USA, and I don't believe they will ever do that, no matter how much of a right-wing government comes into power.

They COULD start building a conventional military while still staying in the good graces of America, but they would need a revival of the Imperial-era spirit for that, and that too is highly unlikely.

Even though they accept the threats they face, and believe in facing them militarily, they are still highly pacifist and there would be quite some opposition to any moves made for rearmament.

Exactly, it is a well-known fact that those countries who have their own space program and have sent satellites in space with their own rocket, simply have the capability to deliver nuclear warheads through ballistic missiles.

One question- How will the China be affected if Japan starts re militarization? Like they let go of their pacifist stand and invest heavily in defense? Will it make China focus more on Japanese?

China is already affected.

Japan doesn't show it but they have pretty much broken every law of the arms treaty with tacit support of the Americans.

To give you an example.

Japan's ASW capability dwarfs not only the Chinese but the entirety of Asia.

India china russia combined to not stack up against the Japanese in ASW warfare numerically or technologically. Japan alone posses 120+ ASW aircraft to India's 12 China's 50 and Russia's 30-40.

They will also have the highest number of 5th gen aircraft with 120+ F-35 along with the highest number of BMD capable destroyers.

China already focus a lot on Japan. If you go through their various studies and reports you will find that japan has entire sections dedicated to it.

Then there is the historical baggage. Even in defeat the Chinese could never actually control the home islands and they continue to remain bitter about it.

They don't even need a icbm . Kyushu to Beijing is just 1500 km . Any run of the mill missile can do.
