i think they should give drones or something like that to minimize casualties & for better border patrol..
True Drones are good but sometimes patrols are needed.
Moreover if we use better surveillance equipments like radars, camera and intelligence, we can detect most of the threats.

I believe we will improve and make our border impenetrable in future.

After Bangladesh, Pakistan IB, BSF to guard Indo-Myanmar border
In a major decision, government has decided to replace the Assam Rifles (AR) with BSF for guarding the porous Indo-Myanmar border notorious for movement of insurgents and smuggling of arms and narcotics.
The decision in this regard was recently taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs and a Cabinet note will be soon prepared to be sent for final approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), country's highest decision making body on security related issues.
"An in-principle decision has been taken to hand over the security duties on Myanmar border to us," BSF chief Subhash Joshi told news agencies.
The decision will entail an expenditure of crores of rupees for the BSF which has been approved by the Finance Ministry.
Apart from the new responsibility of guarding the Indo-Myanmar border, the Border Security Force (BSF) is at present deployed on the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
According to the blueprint prepared in this regard, at least 40,000 BSF personnel will be deployed for the porous border.
The AR, sources said, will be inducted into fresh roles to undertake counter-insurgency operations in other theatres.
The BSF will start the process of recruiting new manpower for the task after the approval of the CCS headed by Prime Minister.
A decision in this regard has been pending for many years after the GoM on Kargil advocated the theory of 'one border, one force'.
The new proposal entails the country's second largest paramilitary force to create posts right on the border as compared to AR posts which are much inside.
India's border with China is guarded by another force ITBP while the borders with Nepal and Bhutan are guarded by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
India shares a 1,640 km-long border with Myanmar manned by Assam Rifles, and dense forests in most parts make the boundary porous and vulnerable.
Most of the posts of Assam Rifles are located well inside Indian territory and only a handful of them are located near the zero line, which makes it easier for insurgents camping in Myanmar to sneak into India easily.
Assam Rifles was entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the border with Myanmar in 2002 and at that time, the strength of the force was 30 battalions (1000 personnel in each battalion).
Gradually, the strength of the force, which draws its strength from the Army, has been increased to 46 battalions.
20 more battalions are in the process of being raised by the force, which is the country's oldest paramilitary popularly called the 'Cachar Levy'.

41k BSF troops, Rs 5,000 cr infrastructure for Myanmar border?
A plan to deploy 41,000 troops and setting up of Rs 5,000 crore infrastructure will be on the government's table this week as it looks to replace Assam Rifles with BSF to guard the porous Indo-Myanmar border.
A team of senior BSF officials will soon make a detailed presentation to the Ministry of Home Affairs as to the force's requirements for stationing its personnel and creating posts along this 1,640 km-long border, which is notorious for movement of insurgents and smuggling of arms and narcotics.

A field survey team is already in the border areas to map the topography and the terrain and forests in the area.

Border Security Force (BSF), according to sources, has projected a requirement of 41 battalions (roughly 41,000 personnel), under three new sectors, to man this border.

The estimated cost of creating the infrastructure for the above, over a period of five years, is about Rs 5,000 crore.

"The final approvals will be made by the government later this week," sources privy to the development said.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the country's highest decision-making body on security-related matters, will take up the MHA proposal soon for a final approval.

BSF is at present deployed on the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Assam Rifles personnel will now be deployed in anti- insurgency operations in the same area and in some other theatres of conflict.

A decision to hand over security duties on this border had been pending for many years after the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Kargil advocated its 'one border, one force' theory.

The proposal entails the country's second largest paramilitary force creating posts right on the border in an area marked by dense forests and difficult terrain.

Most of the posts of Assam Rifles are located well inside Indian territory and only a handful of them are located near the zero line, which makes it easier for insurgents camping in Myanmar to sneak into India.

Assam Rifles was entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the border with Myanmar in 2002. At the time, the strength of the force was 30 battalions.

India's border with China is guarded by another force, ITBP, while the borders with Nepal and Bhutan are guarded by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

BSF launches new surveillance system to check infiltration
Jammu: BSF has introduced a state-of-the-art Communication and Surveillance System, armed with bullet-proof bunker and high-end infrared cameras, along the Indo-Pakistan border in Jammu frontier to arrest cross-border infiltration.

"We have put in place the Communication and Surveillance System (CSS) along sensitive villages and riverine areas on the International Border," BSF Deputy Inspector General Virender Singh told PTI.

"This new system is being used to check infiltration of militants from across the border," he said.

The CCS, a ropeway system with a bullet-proof mobile bunker carrying high-resolution infrared cameras and high-end floodlights, would carry out surveillance on sensitive riverine areas - a preferred infiltration route in Hiranagar sector of Jammu frontier.

The ropeway system has motor-operated pulley-cables along which bullet-proof bunker runs, he said, adding that a bunker is fitted with eight infrared cameras, floodlights, mikes and other equipment.

"The cameras have 360-degree rotors manned from a control room by technical official of BSF," the DIG said. First such system has been installed in a riverine area and low-lying parts at the Bobiya Border Outpost (BoP) in this sector.

BSF has identified 19 sensitive and riverine areas and gaps along the 190-km International Border in Jammu frontier for instalment of the facility.

"The entire project is prepared by our men. It is meant to deal with situation like fog and during night hours, when visibility is less... A company can move in that bullet proof bunker... There are also hooters and alarm system to ensure that there is no infiltration along the border," he said.

"The entire area will be illuminated through lights. The high-resolution cameras can even see through fog. The entire area will remain under close monitoring of our boys. The system is also fitted with small mikes which connect two bunkers and the central bullet-proof bunker," he said.

The system has been developed in just a month, Project Director commandant Jameel Ahmed said. After successful results, it would be installed in other riverine and sensitive areas as a fool-proof security measure, the DIG said.

January 05, 2014 00:24 IST
Siliguri: The Border Security Force (BSF) will be entrusted the task of guarding the India-Myanmar border later this year, the paramilitary forces' chief said on Saturday.

"From this year itself, we will start guarding the 1,624-km-long India-Myanmar border that passes through the states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh," BSF Director General Subhash Joshi told media persons in Siliguri.

The BSF now patrols the country's borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan while Assam Rifles have been maintaining vigil at the India-Myanmar border since 2002.

"Now that we have been given the responsibility, we will carry out the work of building infrastructure like border posts and new roads,' said Joshi, who was here to take the salute at the passing out parade of 335 women personnel of the BSF at Salugara.

Praising the force's personnel, Joshi said they were equally adept in discharging duties at temperatures of 50 degree Celsius and minus 50 degree Celsius.

The BSF chief said the country's militants were running 50 camps in Bangladesh.

"We are working in coordination with Border Guards Bangladesh. The security is being beefed up along the border by using modern technology. Our target is to completely stop infiltration and smuggling," he said.

BSF recovers heroin worth Rs100 crore in Punjab near Pak border - The Times of India

AMRITSAR: Border Security Force (BSF) troopers on Tuesday morning recovered 20kg of heroin, valued at Rs 100 crore in the international market, BSF officials said here.

The seizure was made following an encounter with smugglers from the Pakistan side near border outpost Bharopal in the Amritsar sector, 30km from here, a BSF spokesman said.

The contraband was seized following a search operation. The spot is located 150 metres inside the Indian territory.

With the latest seizure, the BSF has seized 82kg of heroin in the first 35 days of this year. The total heroin seized in 2013 in the Punjab sector was 322 kg.

"BSF personnel at out post Bharopal in the Amritsar sector observed suspicious movement of smugglers along the border fence. When challenged, the smugglers fired at the BSF troops, who retaliated in defence. However, the smugglers, taking advantage of the dense fog, managed to escape back to Pakistan," the spokesman said.

BSF Punjab frontier inspector general Ajay Singh Tomar has asked officers and troops to be vigilant along the 553-km India-Pakistan international border in Punjab to thwart smuggling of drugs. The troops are extra vigilant during the winter months when dense fog hampers visibility in the border belt.

Amritsar is about 250km from the state capital Chandigarh.

BSF gives its jawans unique stripes

New Delhi: BSF jawans will now don yellow-red shoulder badges after the paramilitary force recently adopted a unique "in-house" mechanism to recognise seniority amongst the personnel.

Constables in the country's largest border guarding force who have completed over 20 years of service have been given the badges which are akin to the ones that policemen wear when they are promoted from Constable to Head Constable rank.

The above move has come upon the directions of Border Security Force chief Subhash Joshi.

The badges, with senior constable written on them, were given to troopers across BSF formations on Republic Day and they now proudly wear it on their 'Khaki'.

A large number of personnel in the 2.5 lakh-strong force had a grievance that they were not being promoted and had to serve alongside freshly-recruited constables.

"In police and paramilitary forces, rank matters a lot and the issue affects the personnel. A unique system was hence created in-house to give these constables their due," a senior official said.

Officials said that BSF DG Joshi had met a number of troopers at 'Sainik Sammelans' in border areas who would request him to ensure they got timely promotions.

The DG later devised the plan and issued orders for the handing out of the badges which will state that they have been given as stripes of promotion.

The promotion backlog occurred after the Ministry of Home Affairs, in 1996, abolished the ranks of Naik and Lance Naik in these forces upon the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.

The move created a stagnation in the ranks of constables as it took them more than 22-24 years to be elevated to the next rung even as their counterparts in other forces got promoted in 12-14 years.

The situation was so bad that many constables ended up retiring in the same rank as there was no avenue for their promotion.

The paramilitary forces, including BSF, have been asking MHA to find a solution, but no decision has been taken till date to fix the anomaly.

"I never expected that I would ever be honoured like this. After a few years in the service we knew that we would retire as constable... But at least I can now say I have earned some ranks," Constable Dharamvir Singh, who works at the forces' headquarters here, told PTI.

Singh, who is eligible to be a Head Constable now, has worked for 20 years in the paramilitary force and is among those who have been given the unique badge.

Man jumps over fence into Pak border
JAISALMER: A suspicious person jumped over the fencing and ran into Pakistan border in Tanot sector on India-Pakistan border late on Sunday evening.

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was at the opposite (OP) tower, 800 metres away from the fencing, when the incident occurred. However, before he could reach the person, he had succeeded in entering the Pakistan border. After getting information about it a flag meeting was held on Sunday night and BSF has requested Pakistan to hand over the suspicious person back to India who has entered into their area. Till the news was filed Pakistan had not returned the person. BSF has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.

With the Union government withdrawing BSF companies, battalions time and again from Pakistan and Bangladesh borders for different duties in assembly, Lok Sabha or other internal security matters the security arrangements at the country's border is being affected. The area of duty of jawans is increasing and they have to guard bigger areas. The recent example is a BSF battalion from Bikaner was deployed somewhere else due to which the area of the remaining battalion has increased.

Earlier a jawan was guarding 300-400 metres area, but after the battalion's withdrawal the area has increased to 800 metres.

As the result on Sunday late evening, an incident took place at border adjoining Tanot area in Jaisalmer as the distance between one jawan to other was around 900 metre and taking advantage, a suspicious person ran into Pakistan border under the fencing.

BSF senior official sources confirming this incident said that at Tanot area adjoining the Pakistan international border, from sub pillar 1/5 of607 border pillar of BSF battalion border post, a lean suspicious person ran into the Pakistan border.

Sources said that a BSF sentry from the distance of 800 metres saw the person getting under the fencing and he challenged and shouted, but by then the sentry could reach there, the person ran into the Pakistan border.

Sources said that the suspicious person along with the fencing walked for 10 feet and seeing the right point, he ran across the border. After this incident, a flag meeting was held with the Pak rangers and informed them about an Indian going into the Pakistan border and requested them to find out that person and hand over him back to India.

Sources said the suspicious person who crossed the border on Sunday could be a Bangladeshi or Myanmarese intruder. They have found the footsteps, which is of small size of 5-6. At present BSF has ordered for high level investigation .

BSF DIG Amit Lodha including other senior officers reached the spot.

On the other hand, central govt for the forthcoming lok sabha elections, have started the preparations to remove BSF battalions and companies from Bangladesh and Pakistan borders and have started deploying for the elections and for this directions have been given

With the withdrawal of BSF battalions from the international borders, there are chances of security getting affected at the borders of the country and jawans have to give additional duty and there is possibility of that this would badly affect their morale and physical capacity.

BSF makes huge seizures in Tripura frontier - The Hindu

The Border Security Force (BSF) made huge seizures in Tripura in first month of the year, but the smuggling menace is far from ending. The force which is responsible to manage 856 km boundary with Bangladesh in the state captured goods worth over Rs 1 Crore in January.

A BSF official said on Friday that contrabands, textiles, narcotics and live stocks were seized at various places. He said they were detected within assigned jurisdiction of the border.

BSF said items worth Rs. 97,69,035 seized during attempts to smuggle out to Bangladesh and Rs. 4,44,178 was made while coming from Bangladesh. The border force also nabbed 22 people, 10 of them Bangladeshis, on charge of illegal trespass in January alone.

The smuggling wave in Tripura continues even after construction of barbed wire fencing along three fourth of border and introduction of sophisticated gadgets like night vision device and radar to detect human movement on the border.

Troopers from the BSF and its counterpart Border Guards, Bangladesh (BGB) recently conducted joint border patrol in Tripura frontier to enhance coordination between them to deal with smuggling and illegal infiltration.
