not dierctly related to the B.S.F. but i found this article pretty interesting:-

High alert sounded as eight LeT terrorists sneak in Gujarat
Intelligence Bureau revealed that eight terrorists have entered Bhuj in Gujarat through coastal borders and all efforts are being made to trace their exact location.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said Pakistan-based terrorist groups continue to sponsor, plan and organise terror act in India and their activities remain a threat in the hinterland.
Addressing members of the Consultative Committee for Home Ministry, he said groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba continue to
sponsor terror acts in India.
"It is seen that the planning and organising of terrorist acts from across the border continue. Terrorists active in the
hinterland remained a threat," he told the Committee at a meeting here.

According to the intelligence input on June 17 some terrorists were trying to sneak into country through coastal borders by taking advantage of monsoon as fishermen too are staying off-shore in rainy season.

The latest IB message warns of the Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba, sending its operatives across the land or sea border to carry out a terrorist strike in the state.
In response to the IB alert, the Navy, Coast Guard, coastal police, local police, Border Security Force, Army and the customs department have all heightened surveillance along both land and sea borders of the country.
The security has been beefed up in the entire state and vigil has been stepped up on the crucial points on coastal areas .The security measures include sea and aerial patrolling.

An alert has been sounded across the twelve coastal districts of Gujarat and also in parts of Maharashtra, covering the stretch from Jamnagar up to Mumbai.

The intelligence agencies were also having apprehensions that terrorists might use the modus operandi of lashkar e taiba terrorists who sneaked into the country through coastal area and carried November 2008 attack on Mumbai.

ITBP being deployed in mountains has developed the expertise in rescue & relief operations in mountains, which entail different specialized skills of very high standard. It is always first in extending rescue & relief in case of natural calamity. Two recent major rescue & relief operations conducted by ITBP were during the massive land slide at Malpa village in the Kumaon Hills in Aug - Sep '98 and in the major earthquake in Chamoli and Rudraprayag areas of Garhwal in the State of U.P in Mar - Apr '99.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police to raise 9 more battalions

The first passing out parade of constables at the 45th Battalion of Indo-Tibetan Border Police at Idayapatti camp in Madurai on Saturday.
With varied national duties and responsibilities like protecting the VIPs and vital installations, Indo-Tibetan Border Police has planned to raise nine additional battalions by 2015, its Inspector General, Inder Singh Negi, said.

The elite paramilitary force was raised in 1962 primarily for guarding the border covering 3,488 km after Indo-China war. However, the force had been deployed for various other duties like combating extremists in the Kashmir valley and to fight the naxals in Chattisgarh, Mr. Negi told 'The Hindu.'

Besides, it is been involved in protection of VIPs and important installations in the country. ITBP has also been involved in maintenance of law and order, especially during elections time. "With so much of additional duties, we need to have additional force," he added.

ITBP has 45 battalions across the country and four battalions are in the process of being raised. The IG said that ITBP had planned to have nine more battalions by 2015.

Mr. Negi was here to review the first passing out parade of constables of general duty held at the ITBP camp in Idayapatti near here on Saturday. The Idayapatti camp was made an additional training camp to meet the requirement of raising additional battalions, he said.

A total of 189 constables took part in the passing out on completion of 44 weeks of rigorous basic training including physical toughening, weapon training, drill, tatics, field craft, battle craft and unarmed combat. They took solemn pledge under the tricolour.

Addressing at the parade, Mr. Negi asked the constables to take pride in joining ITBP after tough training. He wanted them to dedicate themselves for the cause of the nation. He presented trophies to the award winners.

Deputy Inspector General, S.S. Mishra, and the commandant of 45 Battalion, Gopinathan Choyi, were present.

The Inspector General of Police (South Zone), Abhay Kumar Singh, took the salute and reviewed the parade.

Appreciating the quality of the parade, Mr. Singh emphasised the need for the personnel to meet the challenges to serve the nation with utmost zeal and dignity.

The recruits had undergone 44 weeks of training in weapon handling, map reading, drill, karate, battle craft, field craft, internal security, border security and disaster management.

They took oath that they would discharge their duties in protecting the nation with all honesty and sincerity.

Guidance-cum-Training Programme for recruitment in ITBP and BSF
Choglamsar:
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in cooperation with Border Security Force (BSF) is organising a 16-day training programme for aspirants from Ladakh for recruitment in ITBP and BSF. The training will be held at 16th BN, ITBP camp in Choglamsar, from May 5 to 21. The training programme is open for all who possess a minimum qualification of matriculation and whose age is between 18 and 23 years. There is a relaxation of 5-year to those belonging to Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste and 3-year to Other Backward Class.

The training programme starts at 8.00AM with physical exercise and at 9, the trainees will be taught general knowledge, mathematics and reasoning for two hours. These are the basic fields of test that an aspirant has to undergo during the selection or recruitment process. However, this training doesn't guarantee automatic selection in the ITBP or BSF and the trainee has to undertake a declaration before the start of the programme.

The recruitment process will begin on 27th May. In total, there are 749 vacancies, 676 in ITBP and 73 in BSF.

Sentinels of the Himalayas
ITBP Academy turns people into brave-hearts

Physical fitness is an extremely important aspect of training. Cadets
here are seen practicing karate
Mussoorie: After several days of overcast sky and occasional snowfall, sun finally came out on January 21. In the hill town on the Shivalik range, winter sunshine is not about weather alone; it's about the spirits as well. The early morning sunshine had brought cheer and a sense of well-being with it at the ITBP Academy. "We are very lucky," says Commandant Anil K. Phool, in charge of the combat wing at the Academy.

Sitting at the viewpoint at an elevation of nearly 6,000ft above sea level, with the Academy sprawled all around, he says, "We are located on the eastern slopes of the range.

On clear days like these, we get sunshine from morning to evening, unlike the IAS Academy, which is on the western slope." No mean comfort this is, given that after their training the ITBP personnel will get posted to border areas at the heights of 9,000ft to 18,000ft above sea level. A windless, sunny winter day would then be a luxury beyond imagination.

Though the Academy does not simulate the operational life that would follow, it does give a flavour of what being a Himveer (or sentinels of Himalayas), as ITBP personnel like to call themselves, means. Deputy director of the Academy, P.K. Dhasmana (deputy inspector general) says, "While our training is oriented towards conventional warfare, much on the lines of the Indian Army infantry battalion, we focus more on physical fitness, because our deployments are such that there can be no compromise on that."

ITBP women combat force to guard VIPs
Women are set to enter into combat ranks of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), country's para-military force, with a batch of 209 women constables set to pass out later this week. Last year, women were inducted into the Border Security Force.
Trained in commando and sniper skills, the lady recruits are set for deployment for VVIP security, including the President and Vice-President besides getting pitched in the anti-Naxalite operations and at border check posts. "They will also assist in providing security duty to the pilgrims for Kailash Mansarovar yatra which would solve the problem of escorting women on the yatra," I S Duhan, Commandant, Basic Training Centre (BTC), ITBP, told Deccan Herald.

Some of them will be pressed into service in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in naxal-infested states like Chhatisgarh. "They would prove useful in searching/frisking women in the naxalite regions since it was posing operational problems for the forces," said Duhan. Currently, four battalions of the ITBP, part of the Central forces currently involved in anti-naxalite operations, are pitched into battle with the Maoists, mainly in Chhatisgarh.
The freshly trained batch of 209 women constables who will pass out on January 29 is part of the over 400 women constables recruited by the ITBP a year ago to raise a battalion of women in combat ranks. The ITBP, basically a mountain-trained force, is currently deployed along the 3,488-km long India-China border.

Home Minister P Chidambaram will take the salute of the passing-out parade at the Basic Training Centre of the ITBP at Bhanu in Haryana, said Duhan.

BSF to acquire 6 acres at Wagah to beautify retreat ceremony spot
BSF to acquire 6 acres at Wagah to beautify retreat ceremony spot - Hindustan Times

=================================================================================================

The BSF IG said that 30 more jawans have been posted for the retreat ceremony as per a rotational policy so that no jawan was made to take part in the ceremonial lowering of flags for more than a year since it involved heavy stomping of feet that led to injuries to the lower limbs of personnel.
I feel there is no use of such ceremony and it should be stopped.

BSF officer killed by cattle smugglers
KOLKATA: The Border Security Force (BSF) seems to be paying a heavy price, thanks to the Centre's policy to issue non-lethal weapons to personnel manning the Indo-Bangladesh border. The number of Bangladeshi casualties may have come down but authorities across the border don't seem to have kept their words to curb crime along the international border.

As a result, criminals are taking advantage of the fact that the BSF jawans aren't armed with lethal weapons and creating havoc.

On Monday, sub inspector Rajender Singh of the 91 Bn BSF, who was attacked by cattle smugglers on July 22, died in a city hospital.

Attacked at BOP Jhorpara in the Dhantala police station area of Nadia, Singh slipped into a coma. On Monday morning, he breathed his last at the Mission Hospital in Kolkata.

"He was a resident of Haryana and attacked by cattle smugglers when he attempted to stop them. He was attacked with sharp edged "DAHs" resulting in multiple cut injuries. The BSF lodged an FIR at the Dhantala PS. Six Indians and six Bangladeshis were named but no arrests have been made as yet", a senior BSF officer said. tnnWith BSF jawans worried about being suspended should they pull the triggers of their Insas rifles or newly-inducted Beretta carbines, attacks such as these have gone up manifold. Whenever the BSF attempted to stop the cattle smugglers from across the border, Indian villagers - associated with the racket - have attacked the jawans, Protests by the BSF at all levels hasn't helped much.

"After implementation of non lethal strategy on Indo-Bangla border, smugglers have become aggressive. In 2013, 47 BSF personnel have been seriously injured by miscreants along the South Bengal Frontier alone. Along the eastern theatre border, the number of severe casualties has been 75 personnel during this period," an officer said.

Officers are now facing a drop in morale among the troops who are sent out on patrol to get beaten up by criminals.

Even as another round of protest has been lodged with Bangladesh in Singh's case, the BSF is not too hopeful that things will improve. Meanwhile, Singh's body is being sent back to his home in Haryana by air.

Pakistan violates ceasefire, injures BSF jawan
JAMMU: Violating the ceasefire thrice in the last two days, Pakistani troops today opened fire at forward posts along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, seriously injuring a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan.

Meanwhile, BSF Head Constable Ram Niwas Meena, who as injured before in cross-border fire in Samba in Jammu on August 5, succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS in Delhi today.

"There was sniper firing from the Pakistan side at 0830 hours today along the international border on three posts, including the Alfa Machial Border Out Post (BOP) area in the Kanachak belt of Jammu district," a senior BSF officer said.

BSF personnel responded effectively, leading to heavy exchanges which lasted till 1400 hours, he said.

Jawan Pawan Kumar received a bullet in his chest and his legs have been paralysed due to the injury to his spinal cord, doctors at GMC hospital said. He has been referred to AIIMS in Delhi, they added.

Pakistan troops also opened small arms fire at Indian posts in the Balakote-Mendhar forward belt in Poonch district at around 1130 hours today, Army officials said.

Indian troops returned fire but there was no loss of life or damage to property in the exchange, they said.

Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire three times since Friday night in two different sectors in the Jammu region.

Pakistani Army had fired 7,000 rounds of heavy Pika ammunition and mortar shells during the exchanges which lasted seven hours along the Line of Control which began at 2220 hours on Friday.

"Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked firing on several Indian forward Posts along LoC in the Durga Battalion area in Poonch district at around 2220 hours," defence spokesman SN Acharya said.

BSF foils Pakistani bid to target Indian post
JAMMU: Amid escalating tensions along the border, the BSF today said it had foiled an attempt by a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) to attack a forward post along the Line of Control.

Surveillance equipment detected the Pakistan Army team approaching the post in Krishnagati sub-sector in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir around 2330-2345 hours late last night, a BSF officer said.

Alert jawans of BSF's 135 battalion, manning the post, fired on them resulting in exchanges, he said.

The BAT escaped towards Pakistan side, he said adding that no one was injured on the Indian side.

On August 6, a Pakistani BAT intruded into Indian territory along the LoC in Poonch sector and killed five Indian soldiers in an ambush.

not dierctly related to the B.S.F. but i found this article pretty interesting:-

High alert sounded as eight LeT terrorists sneak in Gujarat - Regional News - Saharasamay
They are seriously targeting the WRONG state, sending their beloved Hole-E warriors to be pulverized straight into the Lion's lair.. literally.... :D

Even after so much, they still make disasters afters disasters.....Pakistanis.

From BSF perspective, we seriously need good off-road ATVs and armored vehicles for the BSF in Bhuj.

Camel patrol is effective but slow.

We need something like what the Brazilian military has:

These vehicles are built to handle arid terrain as well as the marshy swamps in the Pakistani border with Gujarat.

BSF should be given more firepower and complete autonomy to operate as the situation demands rather than MHA tying their hands up for pathetic politics....

They simply don't have enough decision-making power.
mate only if our present govt. has got the will to allocate sufficient budget to the Amred forces.man for a country as large as India with two nuclear armed hostile neighbors we should spend at least 25% of the planned govt. expenditure on the armed forces(which will be equivalent to about $75 billion or 3.6% of GDP,taking $1=Rs.55),but the current MMS led govt. only spends around 12.23% of the planned govt. expenditure or a mere 1.79% of the GDP on the armed forces while all the major powers spend at least 3-4% of their respective GDP on defense....

The problem is Article 14 of the constitution which is all about procurement and tendering.

I absolutely refuse to believe that we are incapable to produce advanced small arms in-house.

We are able to do that and we can easily do that as small arms physics are not difficult to imitate and adopt and later, evolve into new designs and developments.

It is just that every defence deal has a kick-back that the ministers get involved in it, and when they are uncovered, the files then mysteriously 'disappear'.

The current DPP is as useless as it was before because it is only black ink on white paper that's all.

Democracy is fine, but over-democratic methods only add to bureaucracy and make defence incompetent. In matters of national defence there should be no democratic approach.

The key problem BSF and IA have is the incumbent government's decision to tie their hands by giving them restrictive orders at the border.

Example: banning BSF to shoot illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, for cheap vote bank.

Now sir how you relate article 14 to this?
Article 14 says:-
14. Equality before law The State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth
And I don't support killing of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, we can send them back but can't shoot them as this would be illegal and immoral to do so.
