Arjun MK-1 really a great achievement by the DRDO and it should be produced in bulk.....................:emot112:
IA made his mind to use MK-1 over desert only..
As they argue that bridges in Punjab cannot hold its weight..

IA is looking for 50ton MBT ( FMBT ) and T-90 which weight 45-47tons is good in that sector for now..
Presently their are 250 orders for Arjun..

Why don't many people here believe in our indigenious technology and always down play our own inventions..........................

The Renk RK 304 is a hydromechanical power shift, reversing and steering transmission and is used in new power packs installed in upgraded M48, M60 and Centurion tanks, the Otobreda Palmaria 155 mm self-propelled howitzer (coupled to MTU diesel) and prototypes of the Arjun Indian MBT.

The Renk 304 transmission can be attached to the engine directly or via an intermediate structure. The service and parking brakes are arranged on the two transmission output shafts positioned transversely to the input drive.

The connection to the final drives can be made via disconnectable gear-type couplings or via universal joints. Two mounting points are arranged on the transmission for a three-point support of the power pack.

The two-radii superimposed steering transmission is infinitely variable in the large radius range.

Dry running disc brakes at both output shafts act as service and parking brakes respectively. Static braking torque per side is 12,000 Nm. The electrically operated retarder at the transmission input side is electrically actuated with a continuous brake power of 225 kW. The power take-off is primary side driven, connectable, with a maximum output of 110 kW.

Variant

Renk RK 304 transmission with two fan drives on top, infinitely speed controlled. This transmission is suitable for front or rear drive and allows the vehicle to be tow started.

Options for the RK 304 transmission include connecting cable between gear selector, electronic control unit, transmission and vehicle, output gear-type couplings, final drives, sprocket drums, brake actuating system and an external testing device. The version for the Indian Arjun MBT is designated the RK 304-I.

Status

Production. By mid-1999 over 1,500 of these transmissions had been completed. As far as it is known, all applications of the Renk 304 transmission have been in export applications.

Only fools will compare ARJUN with T 90s of IA. I am afraid that T 90s might not be able to hold itself against paki Al khalid and here we are talking about ARJUN? what a waste of time.I am sure the initial T 90s delivered by russia will be in deep shit against al khalid.I WOULD LOVE TO SEE INDIAN ARMY THRASHED IN THE HAND OF PAKISTANI & CHINESE IN A SHORT AND INTENSE BATTLE. THE EARLIER IT OCCURS THE BETTER FOR INDIA.sometimes spanking becomes absolutely needed to stream line drug addicted kids.

the arjun is ideally suited for desert, plains operations.the 1657 t-90(upgraded) with era is a very good against light chinese mbt(type-96) in sikkim, ladakh, arunachal etc. what we need urgently is an good replacement of 2400 t-72 in army's inventory where the arjun mk2 will be a good option until drdo comes up with 50 ton fmbt.

Its T-72 which are updated not T-90..

T-90 are replacement for T-72, many T-72 are now in stores..

Arjun MK-2 is a replacement for T-90S in next 20 years to come..

I hope the IA order more Arjun tanks because in a scenario where deserts are never-ending,the Arjun can rule the battle-field because of its weight distribution, accurate gun, impressive Armour and most importantly the soldiers inside will feel protected both from nature's wrath and enemy shells. The production rate @ Avadi is un-impressive to say the least!!!Hope they increase it to meet our war-time requirements.............

10 independently firing combustion chambers (cylinders) each with it's own piston arranged in a V shape angled at 90 degrees.

HERE THEY GO.......Summer trials this year of upgraded indigenous battle tank

http://twocircles.net/2011jan17/summer_trials_year_upgraded_indigenous_battle_tank.html
New Delhi : Within a year of the government approving a project for an upgraded indigenous main battle tank (MBT), India's defence research agency has readied a Mark II version that will undergo summer and winter trials this year.

The defence ministry had last May given its nod to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop the Arjun MkII MBT which would have enhanced features over the first lot of 124 tanks that have been delivered to the army over the last two years.

"The Arjun MkII tanks will go for summer trials this year and later for winter trials at the end of 2011," a defence ministry official said here Monday.

The army is already operating two regiments of Arjun tanks in the western sector and has placed an order for an additional 124 - two regiments - of the 58-tonne tanks from the Avadi-based manufacturer, Heavy Vehicles Factory.

The army gained confidence in operating the Arjun tanks, despite the initial hesitation, after the first two regiments were pitted against the Russian-built T-90 MBTs early last year in comparative trials in the desert terrain.

The Arjuns, army officers said, had outsmarted the T-90s in all the parameters set for the trials and had prompted the army top brass to admit that the tank was one of the best they had operated.

The Arjun MkII will have about a dozen changes from the first lot, being armed with missile firing capability through a laser homing device.

Though the missile system had been tested on the MkI version of the tank about five years ago, it did not form part of the final design of the initial 124 delivered to the army, and nor will it be mounted on the second lot of 124, ministry officials said.

The system, they said, would have a range of about eight kms, within which it could destroy enemy tanks after homing on to the target using a laser.

Other modifications include better explosive-reactive armour for the tank to protect it from enemy missiles and rockets, improving the sighting facility to provide it a wider view of the battlefield, including night vision capability, and a better communication system.
