Finally the home grown equipments are finding the way in to our forces and that too in numbers, the 2010 was good year when we have seen Akash getting inducted, now LCA got IOC and now arjun is proving it's mettle.

Well this is how our products get first deny, then ridicule........then gradual acceptance, .........finally envy.

The work has not stopped, it has just begun.
The journey towards building a successful mil-ind complex is indeed a long one. And such incidents prove that we are on right track.

what all these programs do is set india to the path of creating superior weapons at a later stage. you have to learn how to walk before you run. The US recently dropped a 300 billion tank venture because it failed! If they fail even today-- hopefully people can get , that not everything you will attempt will be successful.

New Delhi : Within a year of the government approving a project for an upgraded indigenous main battle tank (MBT), India's defence research agency has readied a Mark II version that will undergo summer and winter trials this year.

The defence ministry had last May given its nod to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop the Arjun MkII MBT which would have enhanced features over the first lot of 124 tanks that have been delivered to the army over the last two years.

"The Arjun MkII tanks will go for summer trials this year and later for winter trials at the end of 2011," a defence ministry official said here Monday.

The army is already operating two regiments of Arjun tanks in the western sector and has placed an order for an additional 124 - two regiments - of the 58-tonne tanks from the Avadi-based manufacturer, Heavy Vehicles Factory.

The army gained confidence in operating the Arjun tanks, despite the initial hesitation, after the first two regiments were pitted against the Russian-built T-90 MBTs early last year in comparative trials in the desert terrain.

The Arjuns, army officers said, had outsmarted the T-90s in all the parameters set for the trials and had prompted the army top brass to admit that the tank was one of the best they had operated.

The Arjun MkII will have about a dozen changes from the first lot, being armed with missile firing capability through a laser homing device.

Though the missile system had been tested on the MkI version of the tank about five years ago, it did not form part of the final design of the initial 124 delivered to the army, and nor will it be mounted on the second lot of 124, ministry officials said.

The system, they said, would have a range of about eight kms, within which it could destroy enemy tanks after homing on to the target using a laser.

Other modifications include better explosive-reactive armour for the tank to protect it from enemy missiles and rockets, improving the sighting facility to provide it a wider view of the battlefield, including night vision capability, and a better communication system.

It said nothing about the weight though. Wasn't the MK2 supposed to be lighter by 8 tons or something? Or has the Army accepted 58 tons with significant combat modifications?

You know, they say that its traction and ground pressure is better than T-90, which means that T-90 despite being almost 8-10 tons lighter is having same ground pressure as Arjun. Then I think we simply don't need to reduce weight and rather focus on building infrastructure for accomodating heavy tanks and also get more sarvatra bridges for Arjun transport.

From , what i read , this is just supposed to be an upgraded MK1 , not the Mk2

You know, they say that its traction and ground pressure is better than T-90, which means that T-90 despite being almost 8-10 tons lighter is having same ground pressure as Arjun. Arjun has better ground pressure per tonne , than the t-90.
But its difference is not significant enough to actually bridge the difference in weight.

Arjun will always way more than the T-90.

Advanced version of Arjun MBT getting ready for user trials

The advanced version of India's indigenously-developed Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun would be ready for user trials in June, which could set the stage for induction in the Indian Army of the weapon system which will have missile-firing capabilities and laser finders.

The tank would also be equipped with the indigenous explosive-reactive armour to protect it from enemy missiles and rockets.

The tank is likely to be equipped with the Laser Warning Suites and missile-firing capabilities, which are an advancement over the existing versions of the weapon system.

With a striking range of eight kms, the Arjun would be equipped with Laser Range Finders, which will help it to fire Laser Homing Anti Tank missiles to take on enemy tanks and low-level flying aircraft.

The two-phase project to develop the advanced version of the Arjun MK-II was cleared in 2010 and these will be handed over to the Army for trials after the completion of technical trials, DRDO officials said here.

The tank would be developed further under the phase II of the project and would be sent to the Army for trials by the end of 2012, they added.

The Defence Ministry had sanctioned the development of Arjun MK-II with enhanced features over the first lot of 124 tanks that have been delivered to the army over the last two years.

Two regiments of the Arjun MK-I are already deployed in the Rajasthan sector by the Army and a further order for 124 tanks has been placed with the DRDO.

The Army had earlier decided to procure only 124 pieces of the Arjun, which has been under development since late 70s, but changed its stance after the indigenous tank emerged clear winner in competitive trials with the Russian-origin T-90 in March last year.

I am just patiently waiting and i am sure the day is not far when Indian ARJUN will smash all its criticizers.Now people are trying to act smart by picking shit globules those have been let loose by our idiotic defence journalists, by pointing out the difference between upgraded MK I & MK - II where as in LCA thread they use the articles written by same horrible hili bilies to denigrate Tejas. Keep trying until your head is blusted off by LBG and your body falls flat while the over weight Arjun finishes off your funeral in style.

Or they are referring to those armors which they happened to come across while receiving flag march in other countries?

Indian Media is a stupid and always will be, Few exceptional are there though..

The confusion is still there, Arjun MK-2 is not a big-shot, Major components are already available and can be manufacture 1st prototype within 6 months..

If Arjun Mk-1 updated version then it carry Lahat ATGM and ERA cover with Swedish Camouflage on it..
The system may also equipped with Iron-fist APS and 1500hp engine..

Their is also a rumor that DRDO developed ERA plates like K5 for Arjun MK-1..

ERA disrupts and defeats the shaped charge jet of anti-tank missile warheads effectively thus reducing its penetrating capability. HEMRL developed an ERA capable of defeating latest anti tank missile warheads . The ERA developed is light weight, cost effective and can be mounted at various parts of the tank to increase the protection level. The total weight penalty on account of mounting of ERA panels on T-72 tank is less than 1.5 ton. ERA mounted on T-72 tank can successfully afford adequate protection to tank from Milan warhead and other tank ammunition 125 mm HEAT, 105 mm APDS and HESH . It has been accepted for induction into Service and T-72 tanks are being up armed with this ERA. Productionisation of ERA on the basis of HEMRL technology has since commenced at Ordnance factories to meet the requirements of Army.
