ADA seeks $2 bn for advanced medium combat aircraft

the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an autonomous body under the department of defence research and development, Ministry of Defence, is seeking a $2-billion (approximately Rs 9,060 crore) fund for the development of the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA).

"We have just started working on this fifth-generation aircraft, for which we had already received sanctions to the tune of Rs 100 crore. The way the government is cooperating, I am able to say that we will receive the funding ($2 billion) in the next 18 months," PS Subramanyam, programme director (combat aircraft) and director of ADA, told Business Standard.
The AMCA will be designed with a small radar cross-section and will feature internal weapons and advanced electronic systems. The twin-engined, stealth-multirole fighter will be equipped with missiles like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Astra, besides stand-off and precision weapons.
"The $2-billion fund will initially be utilised to develop two technology demonstrators and seven prototypes. The first flight test is expected to take place by 2017," he said on the sidelines of the Aviation Conclave 2010, which concluded here on Saturday.

Stating that the AMCAs were aimed at bridging the gap between light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Sukhoi heavy weight fighters, Subramanyam said though Russia and the United States were into designing of similar aircraft that weigh 30-35 tonne, the AMCA would weigh only 20 tonne.

"Though the AMCAs were primarily being designed to meet the requirements of the Indian Air Force, we are contemplating rolling out a new variant for the Indian Navy as well," he said, adding ADA would commence research and development on the six-generation AMCA aircraft shortly.

Multiple newspaper reports indicate that the Indian Government has sanctioned Rs. 100 crore for the development of an Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. In October 2010, Rs. 100 crore were released to the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). ADA will prepare a feasibility study by April 2012.

The Director of ADA and Programme Director (Combat Aircraft) Mr. P.S. Subramanyam released proposed specifications for the AMCA:

* Stealth technology to prevent detection by enemy radars
* Super cruise flight capability

operational range - 30 km. I am sure that's a mistake.. My car gives a better range than that..

DRDO to Kickstart AMCA Project

The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has revealed that it is seeking funds to the tune of $2 billion from the Indian government for the development of the advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA).

Speaking at the recently concluded Aviation Conclave 2010, PS Subramanyam, programme director (combat aircraft) and director of the ADA, indicated that the $2 billion fund will initially be utilised to develop two technology demonstrators and seven prototypes. The first flight test of the AMCA is expected to take place by 2017. The ADA falls under the Department of Defence and Research and Development of the Indian defence ministry. The work on fifth generation AMCA has already been initiated with the government giving Rs.100 crores and the rest of the $2 billion is expected in the next couple of years.

The AMCAs are aiming to bridge the gap between light combat aircraft 'Tejas' and Sukhoi heavy weight fighters. The AMCA will be designed with a small radar cross-section and will feature internal weapons and advanced electronic systems. The twin-engine, stealth-multirole fighter will be equipped with missiles like the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Astra, besides stand-off and precision weapons. Unlike its western counterparts, the AMCA will be the first medium combat aircraft in the world to weigh only about 20 tonnes. With aerodynamic design optimisation near complete, the AMCA's broad specifications are final.

The AMCA would have an operational range of 30 kilometres and will be equipped with stealth technology to prevent detection by enemy radar and capability for super-cruise flight.

It is good to see that Indian Navy has express its interest in AMCA, if IAF dont want to buy AMCA it would be good idea to give the same to BSF airwing as send line of defence from air.

With ease of restriction in technology transfer and foreign companies willing to cooperate I am sure AMCA will do much better than LCA . SAAB will be a good partner as they are not at all political motivated and can be trusted. Good choice of opting for SAAB . Sooner or later IAF will also join the program. It all depend on how quickly we progress in this project.

Perhaps our jingoistic writer meant altitude rather than range. 30Km is impressive but highly optimistic.

SAAB is a Swedish Company as was Bofors. I won't jump the gun and label them as good partners only to get foot in mouth 5 years down the line. I have a feeling that we will start hearing about the kickbacks all these defence contracts have been generating pretty soon and it includes SAAB and all others.

But the thing is AMCA should have no delays. DRDO and HAL have backpeddled and muddled many a project with inordinate delays. No more delays please.

Come on - since Bofors how many other graft cases have come up? Who was more at fault? Bofors or the GOI? How long has it been? Also, the Bofors guns did perform exceptionally well in the Kargill war.

If you want to pick out weeds, then you will end up eliminating all major arms companies, beacuse they all deal with bribery in one form or another. Lets be smart and have transparency, but at the same time, lets look at the merit of the product than at the past history of the company ...

We are still too hung up with Bofors and fail to look at the larger picture. The guns work well, Rajiv Gandhi is dead - get over it!

The day Navy stepped into LCA project was the day many came to conclusion that NAVY wants a navalized MCA for her carriers and now it is proved that their conclusion was right. IAF or no IAF --though i believe IAF and its present ACM is very much interested in AMCA however a small sections is still sceptical-- AMCA project will live and see light of the day with Navy.

SAAB will be better partner for AMCA. I'll be surprised if our Israeli friends have problem with that. In the meantime, IN needs to quickly locate solution to throw ~ >21ton baby off its deck.

It's called the F-35C and don't be surprised if the Indian Navy. Places an order sometime over the next 2-3 years.

NO, that was in reference to a quick solution for the Indian Navy. The AMCA is in the early concept stage. In short decades off.....
"IN needs to quickly locate solution to throw ~ >21ton baby off its deck." meant the advanced catapult system solution used to let heavy fighter take-off from the carrier deck.

This requirement remains independent of IN buying F-35C or not. IN needs it, be it AMCA, FGFA, F35.

Where did you read about Navy's need for a quick solution? Had the navy been in need for F-35C, they by now must have signed an agreement with Americans to buy 40-50 F-35C, 3-4 E-2D Hawkeye and for providing technical support in developing a CTAOBAR IAC equipped with EMLS.
