So ideally an aircraft should supercruise beyond Mach 1.8 at least. The danger zone is 0.9 to 1.5

So that's natural physics & to counter that thrust has to be twice at Mach 1.5 compared to Mach 0.7, simple & the F119 engine is capable of doing that. Hence R&D of better engine continues, not just turbofan but variable cycle engine & Scramjet. In 1960s the SR-71 & YF-12 used J-58. They tested (& cancelled) XB-70 also. God knows what secrets USA is holding.
Drag does not stop the world to go into space or do R&D on hypersonic planes & missiles.
