Afghanistan is lost. Let's be real about it. Afghan forces do not have the will to stem the Taliban led and directed by PA Special forces and regular officers. No amount of weapons support can turn the tide of this war unless ground forces are willing to fight to destruction.
Right now we are in a race for time. What we are trying to do is to ensure the conventional Afghan forces can provide resistance as long as is possible and thereby buy enough time to mobilize and deploy the afghan militia who were part of the erstwhile Northern Alliance. India, in alliance with Russia, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and other former soviet republics are coordinating the reactivation of Northern Alliance militias and establishing supply lines and support facilities in the region.
There is a lot of concern in Russia over possible blowback from the complete and uncontested takeover of Afghanistan. The last time this happened, terrorists trained in Afghanistan proliferated into the underbelly of Russia and triggered multiple insurgencies in Chechnya, Dagestan and other republics. Russia may be trying to cozy up to taliban through pakistan but they know that they benefit more from a civil war in Afghanistan than a complete taliban takeover. Same for Iran and India.
The major powers in the conflict are preparing for a civil war in Afghanistan. A huge amount of relationship building exercise, mobilization, arming and training effort awaits us over the next few weeks and months.
