I was just watching Srijan and he says MKI does not have tropicalised engines limiting combat radius to 500km and that the Elta jammers are not integrated into the radar source code and classifies its own radar as a threat. Is this true?
He is not a good analyst when it comes down to the details of the individual weapons. He is barely okay as a geo-political analyst. I shit you not, he once claimed that as a part of doctrine the IAF will carry a gravity device to beijing using SU30mki (supposedly while the chinese planes wave them by) :pound:

Also, he is pathologically anti-Russia so I would not take his views about Russian things seriously.

MBDA agreed to mate with a russian radar????[/QUOTE]

It's an ir missile.. not bvr .. so mating with radar isn't really required.. most probably when it will be used at it's max range i.e 35-50 km it will be guided by the telemetry provided by OLS30 irst of su30mki nd in short nd wvr it will be guided by HMDs

It isn't required but it limits the tracking envelope of the missile. I doubt MBDA will allow it to be slaved to a Russian OLS.

IR missiles hv no such restrictions a la bvr missiles.. only few software upgrades in mission computer will suffice.. mating ASRAAM with OLS30 won't require any source codes.. unlike bvr missiles.. nd no it won't limit tracking envelope of IR missiles.. ir missiles can be used in two situations.. one while in bvr mode (5-50km) where telemetry will be provided by IRST of the aircraft i.e LOAL... Nd other in WVR mode where missile seeker will itself lock on target aided by HMDS i.e LOBL..

IAF is also pretty serious about fielding DERBY ER with su30mki.. when shelf life of r77s in IAF arsenal expires i.e around 2021-22 .. only issue being russian apprehension of providing source codes.. however i feel it will be done anyhow if IAF is adamant enuff

The HMD is from BAE Systems called Striker II but I don't think BAE or Russians will allow integration between this HMD and Russian radar. But it could be integrated to LITENING POD. This would allow MKI pilots to use HMD for BVR targetting, using LITENING.

MBDA is not going to hook up the American seeker to slave to a Russian OLS. It is a British missile with the guts of a Sidewinder. The British are incapable of making the optics on their own. France is the only European supplier for such components. When the missile is incorporated it will be a stand alone weapon not slaved to anything and will only be able to use its autonomous track mode which limits the tracking envelop.

If you really want a fully integrated system then you should either go for the French or Israeli combo of radar, HMDS and missile. Otherwise it will always be handicapped.

DRDO’s supersonic missile ready for IAF fighters

NEW DELHI: India’s first indigenous beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) for fighters, Astra, is now finally ready for induction after 15 tortuous years of development, with the DRDO expecting the IAF to initially order at least 200 missiles for its Sukhoi-30MKI jets.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation is also already working to increase Astra’s strike range from the existing 110-km to over 160-km. “Astra is one of the best BVRAAMs in the world today. We have the capability to develop it for longer ranges,” said DRDO chief Dr G Satheesh Reddy, talking to TOI.
India has joined a handful of countries like US, Russia, France and Israel in developing such advanced air combat missiles that can destroy highly-agile enemy supersonic fighters packed with “counter-measures’’ at long ranges, say officials.

The importance of having deadly air-to-air missiles was underscored during the skirmish between Indian and Pakistani fighters along the Line of Control on February 27, a day after IAF jets bombed the JeM facility at Balakot.

The sleek 3.57-metre long Astra, with a mass weight of 154-kg, flies over four times the speed of sound at Mach 4.5. To be produced by defence PSU Bharat Dynamics for about Rs 7-8 crore per unit, Astra will be a much cheaper indigenous alternative to some of the expensive Russian, French and Israeli BVRAAMs currently imported to arm IAF fighters.

After the Russian-origin Sukhois, the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft will also be equipped with the all-weather Astra. The missile, which is capable of handling multi-target scenarios, has “state-of-the-art ECCM (electronic counter-counter measures) to tackle jamming by hostile aircraft, active radar terminal guidance and “highly accurate complex end-game algorithms for high single-shot kill probability” in both head-on and tail-chase modes.

The DRDO is all gung-ho after it conducted five successful trials of the Astra from Sukhoi fighters against Jet Banshee target aircraft or UAVs, simulating all possible threat scenarios, off the Chandipur coast in Odisha last week.

“The targets were hit at distances of 80 to 86-km with pinpoint accuracy. The technologies developed under the programme will be the building blocks for developing future variants of air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles,” said an official.

India may have developed long-range nuclear missiles like the Agni-V, which has a strike range over 5,000-km, but had faltered in building BVRAAMs till now. Astra suffered from several technical glitches like a defective aerodynamic configuration since the missile project was first sanctioned in March 2004 at an initial cost of Rs 955 crore.

Finally!!! I've been waiting for this news for a long damn time. Between the lack of publicly available information about our current foreign BVR ranges (there are 5-6 different versions of the Russian BVR's we have, with vastly different ranges) + the refusal of foreign missile makers to integrate their products on aircraft from other countries; this is an incredibly crucial development.

An indigenous 110 km BVR (outranges anything Pak has) - which we can fit on whatever the hell we want (incl. the Tejas). Gamechanger, expect the next air skirmish to go very differently.

There is news of them buying PL-15 Missile from NI Hao and installing it on their jf-17.
Just to say that, anything we do in years of hardwork, they go and just request their masters in mao beijing and SO CALLED IRON DRAGONS of global times give them the required counterbalance and then start speaking some shit from tsun tzu war language.
This is frustrating and hamper our designs for the region.
And I am not from a group that think Chinese weapons are third class no no no no one must not think of their enemies like this even if they turned out to be which in this case seems not.

If the missile was tested at a range for 86 km, then how do they claim a range of 110 km? Was Astra tested for that range previously?

Read the official report...the official report says ..it is 100 km+
Again if the astra Shoot downs a banshee on 86 km, which has small rca
Then it can ..shot the fighter s which has larger rca

Tested several times.... See official report in old posts.
HUGE. IAF & @DRDO_India round off tests of Astra air-to-air missile with 5 tests in the last 4 days — with 3 tests in ‘combat config’ with warheads & manoeuvring targets, including one target impact which the IAF says took place at at maximum (100+ km) range. Statement:

PL15 in my opinion is designed to counter very large RCS ,low manoeuvrability and with very minimum counter measures like AWACS which has great counter measures and refuellers and MPA and from open sources and chinese sources ,they are currently testing it from J11 and J16s and there is currently no deal with pakis, paki sources claim that they will have it on blunder block 3 whose induction date in now postponed to 2022

No, the one you are talking about is PL21.
