India plans tunnel network on China border for year round border security

Although work on the crucial 73 India China Border Roads (ICBRs) is ongoing, India is looking towards towards a stronger option for better connectivity along the entire Line of Actual Control. This is underground tunnels with India planning to construct 17 along the LAC, while developing its capabilities in this regard. Tunnels unlike roads will ensure that the distance to the LAC is drastically reduced and there is all-weather connectivity. This will lead to troops and adequate supplies- even during heavy snowfall that block important roads quickly reaching strategic locations in case of a Doklam like standoff or a future conflict.

More importantly, a major hurdle to the construction of border roads is land acquisition and forest clearances, which for tunnels is being considered a relatively smaller issue.
This issue has often taken building of roads, which have much longer distances than tunnels, to be completed in a very long period of time.

In view of the need for capability and technological enhancement in this field, India’s primary border infrastructure construction agency, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), organised a two-day seminar this week.

Attended by officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Ministry of Roads Transport and Highways, Railways, the National Highways Authority of India, the Army and foreign firms involved in such construction activities, it was here that discussions were held on adopting best practises and techniques for tunnel construction.

THE BIG ISSUES ::

Along the entire LAC from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, military posts and the civilian population remain cut off for about six months in a year due to snowfall or rain. The issue is prevalent in the strategically located Ladakh region. The only option left for the armed forces to reach their personnel and send supplies is through air support.

Due to the restricted mobility and in view of the Dokalam standoff, India is quickly moving towards the construction of its 73 ICBRs along the LAC. These roads will also ensure development of the border regions. The BRO which is tasked with constructing 61 of them, has completed 27. However, work on this project which began in 1999 or any road construction in the border areas has its varied challenges.

The foremost problem is land acquisition. A border road passes through different terrains and so has several stakeholders. It could include the centre, state and forest officials and therefore involves different rules. In Arunachal this problem is grave due to lack of land records. Most of these roads are located in forests and wildlife sanctuaries and construction cannot start without environmental clearances, which take years.

Furthermore, the Himalayan ranges with its fragile geology has a history of earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. Monsoons and snow also play havoc, preventing construction and blocking roads.

FINDING SOLUTION ::

On the other hand, the BRO is looking at tunnels for stronger connectivity, bypassing issues of road construction. “Instead of constructing long roads, encircling a hill and then moving on to the next hill, we can instead cut through the hill to create a tunnel. This will greatly shorten the distance from a particular start point to the required destination,” explains a BRO official.

Tunnels will reduce the operational cost of vehicles and the need for deploying troops for security duties in sensitive areas.
It will also ensure all-weather connectivity to regions cut off from the mainland during winters. Tunnels will also be safe from avalanches and landslides. For example, the 10.9 km long Chenani-Nashri road tunnel in J&K reduces the distance between Chenani and Nashri from 41 km to 9.2 km and also bypasses 44 avalanche and landslide prone spots.

The BRO has planned to construct 17 highway tunnels about 100 km in length along the entire LAC, including some which are already under construction. Ladakh is a focus point. A primary tunnel is the 8.8 km long Rohtang tunnel being constructed by Strabag-Afcon joint venture. Others are at Lachung La, Baralacha La, Tanglang La on the Manali – Leh road and Shinkhunla, besides the Zojila pass on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road. In Arunachal, construction of a tunnel at Sela Pass will commence, besides at a place called Nechipu. In Sikkim, the 578 m long Theng tunnel is also being constructed. Tunnel construction will also form an important feature of the rail network.

MoD planning new airbase in Gujarat to fight a 'Short and Swift War' against Pakistan

Within two months in office India's new Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is planning a new fighter aircraft base for the IAF.

The likely location for the base in Gujarat is sufficiently close to neighbour Pakistan to allow an efficient and effective response.

The facility at Deesa, which is located in Banaskantha district, is near the border and is expected to bridge the aerial gaps in the state that already has major fighter bases in Jamnagar in Saurashtra region as well as Bhuj and Naliya in Kutch.

'The IAF has been planning to set up a new airbase in Deesa in Gujarat which has been in the files for the last many years.

'Due to the new defence minister's push, the plan is now moving fast towards reality,' senior sources in the Air Force told Mail Today.

The officials said the plan to develop the base was discussed with Sitharaman during one of her first visits to Jamnagar after she took charge of the ministry in September.

In the last few weeks, the proposal has moved swiftly and is expected to reach the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister in the near future, the sources said.

The development comes less than a month after Air Chief BS Dhanoa declared that the IAF is prepared to fight a 'short and swift war' at a short notice and that the force has the capability of striking across the border if the government decides.

Sources said the new team in the defence ministry follows up all the long-pending proposals and suggestions that are brought to their notice during field visits.

The project to set up the base in Deesa, which has a civilian airfield, has been held back for a long time due to 'procedural issues' and has been discussed many times at the ministry-level in the past.

The need for creating a stronger presence of forces has been felt in view of the increasing economic activities on the Gujarat coastline including petroleum refineries and new ports being built.

This airbase would address the huge distance between the Barmer Air Force Station in Rajasthan and air force stations in Gujarat.

Officials say the facility would give the Air Force the capability to launch counter air campaign, counter surface force campaign and strategic air campaign in case of a war with Pakistan.

The IAF also has plans of using the airbase as a training centre for its rookie pilots and for operating its remotely piloted vehicles.

The Air Force has been working to plug gaps in the western sector with Pakistan in the last few years as it started operations from the Phalodi airbase under the south western air command a few years ago.

Recently assets including the SU-30MKI combat aircraft have been deployed under the command at the Jodhpur air force station along with new ground-based air defence systems on the western front.

Slowly but steadily, the Indian Air Force is preparing itself for a two-front war with both Pakistan and China as it has been developing airfields on both sides.

On the Chinese side, the IAF has developed the Daulat Beg Oldie airfield in the eastern Ladakh sector while it is in the process of developing old advanced landing grounds in Arunachal Pradesh.

Some of the airfields have already been readied while some of them would be ready for use in the near future.

The force is also in the process of finding and developing more airbases in eastern Ladakh area to be able to airlift troops swiftly in case of a Chinese misadventure in border areas.

There is a saying if one is facing hostiles that means he/she is going the right way forward. This is the case with India at present. India is a growing economic power and along with it we have become aware and assertive of our securiry needs. China knows this and has been working on containment strategy for a long time. It was busy buying ports all along our neighboring countries making an encirclment. India has just started to play the game. Pak is a failed state living on foreign alms. Its life is limited. That is why Chinese are interested in colonising Paki asap. All major powers want China to be contained and they know only India is the best bet. Azhar, nsg are non issues. Even if Azhar gets designated nothing changes on ground. Even if we manage to kill him another joker will come up. Nsg is also useless. We have managed to make separate agreements with most countries. But these are pin pricks for chinese. IMO China is desperate to save its slave Pak from falling and stop India from claiming its past lands. Because if we manage to beat Pak and solve Kashmr issue we may review Tibet, Kailash Mansarovar, Aksai Chin in future. After all we still have TGiE sitting in Dharamshala. What are they for...

Army chief Bipin Rawat said Jaish's acknowledgement is proof of terror emanating from Pakistan.

"This makes it clear that terrorists are getting support from across the border+ ," said Rawat.

He added that it's of little concern to him that the nephew of the Pathankot attack mastermind was killed.

"Doesn't matter if he is Masood Azhar's nephew or anyone else, we aim at neutralizing all terrorists no matter where they belong," said Rawat.

Indian commandos in Israel for military drills

India is looking to boost its special forces capabilities, including cross-border counter- terrorist operations, during a two-week military drill with the air forces of Israel and eight other nations in what is the largest such exercise in Israeli history.

The 45-member Indian contingent, including 16 Garud commandos, led by Group Captain Maluk Singh, is also closely working with Israels select special forces during the Blue Flag aerial training exercise with focus on learning what makes them excel at special operations.

"We would look to learn and share with them the procedures followed in mutual interoperability, counter- terrorist operations, method of inducting and training people and try and compare to see if a course correction is required at our end," an Indian officer leading the Garud commandos told PTI.

"The Israelis are more battle-hardened as they have more experience in cross border operations and we can learn from their experiences," the officer said.

In a rare move, while contingents of other participating nations in the massive "war drill" feature fighter aircraft, the Indian Air Force (IAF) decided to send C-130J Super Hercules aircraft along with Garud commandos who will be training for a week each with Israeli Air Forces elite units - Unit 5101 (more commonly referred to as the Shaldag Commando unit) and Unit 669 (Airborne Rescue And Evacuation Unit).

The Garud commandos started training with Unit 669 earlier this week on Sunday and would be moving to the Palmachim Air Force base next week to train with the Shaldag Unit.

Unit 669 was initially mandated to extract and provide medical treatment to downed (and possibly injured) pilots beyond enemy lines. However, in later years the unit also participated in extraction of soldiers of other arms of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), especially Sayeret (Special Forces) fighters in operations beyond enemy lines and seamen in distress.

Shaldags declared mission is to deploy undetected into combat and hostile environments to conduct special reconnaissance, establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control and commando actions.

Its operators undergo the longest training phase of any unit in the IDF, lasting 22 months, and training has a heavy emphasis on navigation.

The mandated role of Garud Commando Force, whose motto - Defence by Offence - matches closely with the task assigned to these two special units of the Israeli Air Force.

"They are very strong as far as special forces are concerned. This is one area we are definitely looking to learn from their experience", Maluk Singh told PTI.

The Blue Flag drill is a biannual exercise designed to strengthen Israels military cooperation internationally. This is the first time India is participating in the drill, along with the US, France, Germany, Italy, Greece and Poland. An unidentified eighth nation is also said to be participating in the military exercise as per local media.

Israel is among the top three to four arms suppliers to India with sales ranging from Phalcon AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) and Searcher, Heron and Harop UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) to Aerostat and Green Pine radars, Barak anti-missile defence and several types of missiles and laser-guided bombs.

The Blue Flag exercise being held at Uvda Air Force Base in Israels south presents a platform for sharing of knowledge, combat experience and in improving operational capability of the participating nations, a spokesperson for the IDF said.

As part of the exercise, foreign crews will practice handling the threat of advanced surface-to-air antiaircraft missiles, with the Israeli Air Forces so-called Red Squadron playing the role of the enemy. The exercise will include flights in formation with planes from different countries, with no countries opposing each other.

Lt Col Nadav, Commander of the 133rd Squadron (Knights of the Twin Tail), which operates Falcon (F-15) fighter jets and is leading the exercise, described it as a "significant milestone in the relationship between the Israeli Air Force and international air forces".

"This exercise will allow us to continue cooperating with these forces in the future as well," he said.

Close to a 100 aircraft and more than a thousand support crew and pilots from the visiting air forces are taking part in the drill taking place in the Ovda Base north of the southern coastal resort city of Eilat, while officers and attaches from nearly 40 other countries are expected to attend the exercise which the Israeli Air Force has described as aiming to "simulate extreme combat scenarios and coalition flights as realistically as possible".

The IDF also said that Israeli squadrons of F-15, F-16I and F-16C/D jets will be used, alongside transport aircraft, helicopters and unmanned drones, during the exercise.

Greece, Poland and the US will drill using their own F- 16s, France will use 2000D fighter jets, Germany will deploy Eurofighter Typhoon jets, and Italy will use multirole fighters while India will use C-130Js.

Israel also said "electronic warfare" will be used during the drills but no details were shared. According to the Israeli army, the goal of the exercise is to both improve technical ability and to strengthen the "diplomatic cooperation between the countries".
The Blue Flag exercise was started in 2013 by Israel but its third edition has attracted huge attention given the massive participation.

He must be talking about Garuds not Indian Army for sure!!
Its in the context of CROSS BORDER RAIDS.Indian army and its special forces are good at it..
The fact of the matter is more experience sharing and Indian + Israeli forces syncing against a common enemy, pakistan.

Indian Army, Garuds...the more we hone the skills..the better we can punish the pakis for keeping our kashmir with them illegally for so long.

That may be true before 2006, but having closely followed the Syrian Civil War, I think Hezbollah's Special Forces would give several western spec ops a run for their money.

No disrespect to Hezbollah but we deal with one of the finest air defence network, very capable Snipers,SSG trains with the best in the world.

And to still dominate them on the LOC like we do is remarkable.

If you watch Pak news clips on Youtube, everyone seems to be talking about Pakistan crashing economy and joint attack by India-US-Afghan to free Balochistan and stop CPEC.
Even Pak Army Chief talked about Pakistan breaking up like USSR due to economy.Nawaz Sharif has mentioned multiple times that since the establishment has not learnt from 1971,Pak will disintegrate further.Dawn leaks was the spark that lit the fire.
Even MQM's Altaf Hussain is now openly working with foreign agencies to free Karachi from Punjabi occupation
Can you please change your avatar picture and put some better picture such a s flower etc?

The Pakis haven't even tested their so called tactical nuke. Does it work? I believe it does not. This all Paki bullshit and propaganda. They have nothing to stop our deep thrusts with our ICGs along a 500km frontage. Even if their Tactical nukes actually work!

I have worked out the calculations of their yield and (in)effectiveness in a Cold Start scenario on another thread. The bottom line is that their tac nukes will be more smoke than fire!

India gives shit of their Tactical Nuclear weapons strategically. But someone else is too perturbed by these weapons in today's world. They would do anything to stop a Indo-Pak confrontattion.
