This maybe off topic but I always wondered how difficult it would be to convert one our C-17 to a bomber? if we were alllowed. it would not be difficult the only things would be to add bomb bays.

OK in an uncontested air environment such as Libya, Afghanistan. But in scenario with a minimum of air threat and SAM that would be a very juicy and easy target.

US and UK have been fiddling with the concept of an "arsenal ship" loaded up with air launched cruise missiles. That would allow you to launch from safe distance and you would drop through the open rear ramp. A machine such as this would give you plenty of range / endurance. You could attack one of your theoretical threats from the sea and reach deep and the geopolitical centers of gravity.

Engine.. we are getting anyway.GE 414 .. isnt it??
AESA.. arent we getting it from Russia, Israel and now France???.. still hungry??? why they said full ToT with codes then? bluffing???
Carbon fibre.. we are good.. and rest from France... nothing unique in sweden.
Flight controls... will bargain dus ka tees.. dus ka tees.
So basically the Gripen ToT would be useless.

Maybe this Govt does not want to trade with Swedan, given probability of starting rumors and controversy all over again? or maybe IAF simply wanted twin-engine fighter for MRCA?

As if the other ToT were precious all these years.

Its not good always to ask for free knowledge transfer of somebody else's hard earned research..

Saab has offered full ToT.. full means full to me... not semi full, not quarter full but FULLL........

Is there a single defence deal between India and Sweden? Bofors was blacklisted and instead of dealing with them, OFB will copy their own system.

Any chance of Gripen being the second choice for the next 80 birds? To start adding up in the lower section of IAF.
IN only choosing NLCA coz it supports Home made, Navy wanted Rafale or two engine fighter which can be stored in Vikramaditya & IAC-1 hangers..

MMRCA winner will get the ca. 80 a/c option as a natural follow on from the main contract.
Why would you want to add another type (and associated logistics nightmare) to an already complex IAF force structure?
The LCA is taking care of the low end of IAF.
May be there's a consideration in IAF or MoD that due to the huge delay in the MMRCA deal, the planned induction process which would have maintained the depleting fleet level would not work with single vendor now. Sourcing another plane from another vendor would reduce the required timeline by almost half or 1/3, as HAL has to come up with infrastructure to handle the additional task. Our force level is going to be seriously low in near future. Just a thought.

First of all, it is Britain that is now in need of Indian investment – as Tata Motors' purchase of Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Steel's takeover of Corus proves most obviously. And, second, today's Indian elite is focused on America; they are vying with China; they are concerned about Afghanistan. What we think, how we act, who we value: these are all third-order questions.

.

Buhahahahaa....Atleast someone has common sense in Britain.

Its an excellent aircraft for the western borders but ppl rubbish it will kill LCA and has american parts and engine, while LCA itself has american engine.
For the 80 fighters anything other than the Rafale is needlessly upping the costs in logistics & infra and needlessly increasing the different type of fighters in an already crowded airforce.

Actually I would go for the Migs...cheap, reliable and on steroids....existing infra, low costs.

For Navy, we should go for 5th generation aircraft fighter jets.

PAKFA would be too heavy also there is also no plan for carrier version as of now. So, Only F-35 is possible. We should Buy 50-70 F-35 for 3 or may be 4 ACC which will be operational by 2022.

I noticed the first replacement Rafale will make are MiG-23s and 27s. Link. Don't the MiG-21s need replacement worse?

Tejas fails IOC

Rafale might be in IAF before Tejas.
That article is for 2011 as of now the aircraft is comeing about beautifully. I saw it in Aero India and it flew exceptionally well, they are just paranoid about crashing it at this critical junction of its induction phase. So they will be very cautious of opening the flight envelop on the FBW system.

Other wise it is a good aircraft to replace the Mig-21, once it matures even france may buy a few or will it only be useing Rafael?

Apparently not...

LCA is India's attempt at an M2000 class aircraft... we have moved well beyond that.
