None of the MRCA will replace the Mig-21. All Mig-21s are to be replaced by MKIs in the operational role. There are a huge number of Mig-23s and Mig-27s that need replacement and is of higher priority.I noticed the first replacement Rafale will make are MiG-23s and 27s. Link. Don't the MiG-21s need replacement worse?
We have 200 Mig-21s as of today, out of which 80 are grounded and ready to be phased out this year. The additional 82 MKIs ordered(2007 and 2011) are meant for replacing the old Mig-21s. The Bisons will be replaced eventually with the LCA MK2 and PAKFA over the decade, by 2022.
There will be a major shortfall of aircraft in 2016-17 as over 200 aircraft are set to be phased out, all the Migs save the Mig-29.
Rafales will replace some 100 odd Mig-27s that need replacing by 2018.
By 2018 we will have 3 types replacing Mig-21s while we will have only one type (MRCA) replacing Mig-27s and older Jaguars.
