I noticed the first replacement Rafale will make are MiG-23s and 27s. Link. Don't the MiG-21s need replacement worse?
None of the MRCA will replace the Mig-21. All Mig-21s are to be replaced by MKIs in the operational role. There are a huge number of Mig-23s and Mig-27s that need replacement and is of higher priority.

We have 200 Mig-21s as of today, out of which 80 are grounded and ready to be phased out this year. The additional 82 MKIs ordered(2007 and 2011) are meant for replacing the old Mig-21s. The Bisons will be replaced eventually with the LCA MK2 and PAKFA over the decade, by 2022.

There will be a major shortfall of aircraft in 2016-17 as over 200 aircraft are set to be phased out, all the Migs save the Mig-29.

Rafales will replace some 100 odd Mig-27s that need replacing by 2018.

By 2018 we will have 3 types replacing Mig-21s while we will have only one type (MRCA) replacing Mig-27s and older Jaguars.

Apparently not...

LCA is India's attempt at an M2000 class aircraft... we have moved well beyond that.
Well i guess there are some hurdles that they need to cross, i am sure it will.

Mirage and LCA are very different aircrafts just because an aircraft has a semi-circle duct does not automatically get compared to Mirage-2000. The Mirage is huge compared to Tejas and its far older, the Tejas incorporates composites and the Mirage does not. The mirage is a delta wing where as the tejas is a compound canard delta wing and the tejas wing is at the middle of the fuselage while the mirage wing starts from the lowest part of the fuselage.

I was wondering what is the French Navy going to use after they retire the older aircrafts, only Rafael? The Tejas will come out with a naval variant.

If MKI is replace MiG-21, what is LCA replacing?
There was a point when we had something like 900 of them. Had LCA seen induction in the mid half of 2005 we would have seen hundreds of orders. The MKIs, LCAs and PAKFAs will replace Mig-21s. That's 270 MKIs, 214 + x FGFAs and at least 120 LCAs.

what he meant is that the role of Mig 21(as an air superiority fighter) will be replaced by the MKI.... as far as LCA is concerned, it is to be inducted as the light weight work horse of the airforce instead of the heavy end ones....

AMCA will replace Rafale, and Rafale will replace LCA,

:sucide:

btw , thank you bhramos , for the post #1243 .

In 1991 the Air Force switched its preferences towards the two-seater, announcing that 60% of the Rafale fleet would be made up of the variant. ---> Rafale B http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Rafale#Standards

Nice to see what IAF will buy .
Better 50-50 .
what say ?

Who said anything about replacing MKI? Its going to be there for another 30years. PakFA is force multiplier and probably IAF will be increasing squadron strength to 42.

It seems so much nuisance has been created that GoI has to respond:

India tells Britain: We don't want your aid - Telegraph

India's Finance Minister has said that his country "does not require" British aid, describing it as "peanuts".
Pranab Mukherjee and other Indian ministers tried to terminate Britain's aid to their booming country last year - but relented after the British begged them to keep taking the money, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.
"We do not require the aid," he said, according to the official transcript of the session.

"It is a peanut in our total development exercises [expenditure]." He said the Indian government wanted to "voluntarily" give it up.

According to a leaked memo, the foreign minister, Nirumpama Rao, proposed "not to avail [of] any further DFID [British] assistance with effect from 1st April 2011," because of the "negative publicity of Indian poverty promoted by DFID".
"They said that British ministers had spent political capital justifying the aid to their electorate," one source told The Sunday Telegraph.

"They said it would be highly embarrassing if the Centre [the government of India] then pulled the plug."
In India, meanwhile, government audit reports found £70 million had disappeared from one DFID-funded project alone.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds was spent on delivering more than 7,000 televisions to schools — most of which did not have electricity. Few of the televisions ever arrived. A further £44,000 of British aid was allegedly siphoned off by one project official to finance a movie directed by her son.
However, Mr Mukherjee told the parliament last August that foreign aid from all sources amounted to only 0.4 per cent of India's gross domestic product. From its own resources, the Indian government has more than doubled spending on health and education since 2003.

Last year, it announced a 17 per cent rise in spending on anti-poverty programmes. Though massive inequalities remain, India has achieved substantial reductions in poverty, from 60 per cent to 42 per cent of the population in the last thirty years.

AMCA will replace Rafale, and Rafale will replace LCA,
WTF!! You crazy ? What is the point of replacing a fighter which is not in the service ?

We will finish all Rafales by 2022 or 2025(if we order more).

I guess, you missed the humor, but he has logic, in long run say after 2040. only two variants will be in IAF, PAK FA/FGFA and AMCA, rest will be in line for retiring or taking secondary role

The ONLY TWO planes that are to be replaced by 2020 are Mig 21 and Mig 27

Jaguar will remain till 2025 maybe even more will be made

We also need a bigger air force

The airforce has clearly said that it wants to be a 55 squadron fleet for a TWO front war

So we will keep Mirage 2000; Mig 29 and Jaguar till 2030

LCA will only increase the size of the IAF
