Single engine Mirage 2000 and F-16 are in a different weight class to Tejas



Tejas IS a formidable jet, IAF and pilots swear by it and it must and will be inducted in large numbers.

Tejas is viewed as a Mig 21 replacement. Original and latest MRCA were replacements for Mig 27s, Jaguars etc.
This is a discussion that has happened umpteen no. of times

Tejas mk2 will have MTOW higher than Mirage 2000

In short it can replace role of Jaguar and mig 27 to a great extent.

Mirage was our MRCA before it got replaced by Rafale and if Tejas can outperform Mirage 2000 in terms of capability and Gripen etc in tech then it would be good enough to replace MMRCA too.

Damn we have been repeating this for over a decade I feel weird reading same line writing similar line.

But we can compare the prices too right ?

There is a reason Rafale was left out in many procurement against Gripen.


By the time F4 upgrade of Rafale start rolling out for French airforce
Gripen is lighter, less ranged, less load able, less powerful but slightly less costly. That's why peaceful country think it is enough. These country only made air policy mission. (Brazil, Switzerland...).
Egypt, Qatar, India may have to fight and conduct air to ground mission sometimes deep inside the enemy lands : they chose Rafale for that.

About Tejas mk2 : Indian time is strange.... French one not.

Pakistan isn't that deep from our airbases and the price difference isn't slight less but almost half And Saab has a record of delivering what they said when it comes to TOT.

Qatar is buying everything Egypt is following that's it and how they fought war is known
For Gripen list is long south Africa Thailand Hungary etc...

As far as timeline is concerned indian industry has matured over time with Pvt companies coming up . We have seen it in the delivery of Tejas mk1 everything is going smooth now. And whatever bottleneck remains are being sorted out.

Saab is distinctly NOT in control of the vast majority of critical component IP in regards to the Gripen NG project so the question ToT is not in their hands. If they receive permission from the IP holders and waivers from the US then yes ToT can be easily followed through.

No one is going to provide complete TOT but Saab would have helped us in Tejas if we had gone that way. If we are in any dreamy land that french would part with any critical tech it's not gonna happen. Our manufacturing process would have learnt and developed a lot too. Saab is a very efficient organisation.

There are compromises everywhere either we dish out truck loads of money or make a smart choice within budget.

Tejas was inspired by Dassault design contrat. Long time ago.
And as quite always with India, the first contrat was not followed... So Tejas is not fine tuned

Gripen is Swedish + English + Italian + US made. Not easy for a non align country....

I need some specialists opinion : what is the use of chaff on a 5th gen aircraft ?

Why such 4'th gen old technology on a marvelous plane so stealthy that any other plane can't come close.
Why add weight on this impressive product that can fired any other plane at 100km thanks to its so powerfull radar and EOTS ?
I don't understand.... o_O

Reunion is fast becoming India's southernmost outpost to monitor chinkis in IOR. Recently this month INS Tarkash did a 3-day halt at Reunion on her way back after participating in the Russian Naval Day Parade in St P.

While India has access to Diego G through the LEMOA, it's for logistical purposes. This agreement with France to base aircraft at Reunion takes IOR monitoring by IN to a whole new level.

PLAN destinations in IOR are to loiter in Arabian Sea to monitor USN/IN activity, or head to Djibouti or porkistan. Access to all of these lies between India and Reunion

IN's strategy to monitor Plan in its entry to the Arabian Sea is taking shape nicely. The distance between Kochi and Reunion is approx. 4000km. P8I has an operating radius of ~2200km, iow, operating from Kochi currently it can cover half the distance to Reunion in its operating mission, leaving a gap in surveillance of the other half distance. A P8I (assuming it's a P8I) based at Reunion, operating in a North-easternly arc could cover the half the distance to India, while another operating from Kochi could cover the other half of the distance operating in a south-westernly arc. This two pronged surveillance would potentially cover all naval activity heading into the Arabian Sea.

In sync, to ensure P8I can operate from Kochi, a Naval Air Enclave was created at Cochin International Airport this year with hangar and other logistic facilities.
According to the Indian Navy officials, the runway at INS Garuda, a Naval air station located in Kochi, is not large enough for take-off and landing of long-range maritime reconnaissance anti-submarine warfare aircraft like the Boeing P8I.

“The runway at the Navy air base could only allow for the take-off and landing of smaller aircraft like C-130, C-70, AN-32 and the Dornier. Aircraft like the P8I can now take off and land from the Cochin International Airport where they will be provided fuelling facility, aircraft ladders and starting supply,” a senior Navy official told IANS.

The MoU was signed between Captain Satish Kumar S., the officer-in-charge of Naval Air Enclave (NAE) in Kochi, and A.C.K. Nair, Director of CIAL.

The NAE is a Naval aviation facility comprising an independent dispersal, aircraft hangar, administrative building and taxi track.

Plan may have exploited weaknesses in the past, for example to show up undetected in Karachi, but it will no longer be able to operate with impunity.
