Well that has little affect since critical tech like Spectra's secretive radar components still come from the US. Lots of radar, targeting and safety systems come from the US. Furthermore with such a large purchase chances are its weapons pack will be mostly American.
which ever western companies win american always get their share of pie

WOW !!! Putting all eggs in one basket ?
Eggs and one basket scenario comes into play/ hunt us When

1. When we do not know their address.

2. They are going to collapse.

3. There technology endeavours and innovation are going to die.

4. They have malignant animosities with other hyper powers.

5. We are foolish enough while drafting contracts.

6. If they have history of not keeping their promises.

7. Possibility of going against us on Geo-political issues of our concern (UN permanent seat, Kashmir, kills switches during war/nuclear arsenal delivery).

Only one basket egg kind of scenario I can see is French greed on price escalation in future. But again our babus should be smart enough signing the dotted lines.

Also there is a saying that ''Hrinn lekar ghritt kha lena chaiyea'' One should always eat good food even if he has to borrow the money for it.

To the Brits moaning about how their 'aid' has gone down the drain, bitches, you are just repaying what you took from us for 150 years along with the treasures you have hoarded up in your museums like the Koh-I-Noor.

Some (not all) Brits really have this overblown sense of entitlement...a trait they seemed to have injected in gallons into their proxytute (proxy prostitute- all credit to the brilliant Hakimullah Shiv Shastry at BRF, the author of the seminal ebook -Pakistan a failed state) the Pakis.

To be expected, after all the Anglo-Saxons gave birth to the virus that is Pakistaniyat

Ahh, well then shzit- India has already spent billions on critical hardware from the US. should have thought about that paranoia many years back.
No critical equipment has been bought from the US ever. Transport aircraft and LPDs are not critical. Apache may be so, but the numbers ordered will not dent IAF's capabilities if sanctioned.

P-8 parts are available in plenty in the domestic market.

then what names we will be using ?
Rafale IMO. Maybe a Rafale IN or some India specific designation.

With Russia we always have Pak-fa, with Israel missiles, and a range of products from US.
But now how do we placate ze germans ?
Get them to build the Autobahn in India. :D

This deal has totally upset the European defence industry.
France has got much needed billions, they can continue to innovate for the forseeable future.
UK, Italy, Spain are in cutback mode; Germany wouldn't want to go it alone ?
The fat lady is yet to sing. The deal is not done until the contract is signed. What we know today is that Rafale is the L1 bidder. But, if the aircraft has been chosen or not is still up to MoF and possibly the MEA. If the MEA comes in to the picture we don't know what may happen. L1 or L2 won't matter then.

with all respect to opinion of other individuals political factor and reliability at times of war is also important. senior defence analyst even said the same on news. india has more advantage in terms of france support at un security council though uk is also a member and indian nuclear cooperation with france may hava also tilted towards rafale selection.

The avionics development is hitting dead ends. If they can't match mechanical to electrical engineering, they will either have to outsource to Thales or cancel the project.
We will know where Russia stands once we get IAF's input on MKIs upgrades in a few years. Considering IAF will be exposed to the best from both east and the west, they will be able to provide the most impartial judgement. Currently according to IAF pilots, the upgraded MKI will be superior to anything flying in our skies until PAKFA comes in, even after MRCA is done.

One pilot even vocally voiced his frustration at the bureaucratic delays during the early days of the deal where he said the MRCA is supposed to be superior to the MKI, but once the upgrades are initiated the MRCA will play second fiddle to the MKI.

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't 1,800 km a very short range ???
Considering 1) EFT has 3790 km
2) F16 has 4,200km (with drop tanks)
Just a comparison, but isn't the range too short ?
The 1800Km being mentioned in the thread is combat radius. Range should be twice that. But this is when Rafale is doing a deep penetration mission with a heavy payload. The EF and F-16 specs are theoretical range figures with modest payloads.

"The first MMRCA built in HAL should roll out in 2017-18.
Thereafter, HAL will deliver six jets per year, which will go up to 20 per year later. HAL will achieve 85% technology absorption by the end,"
said a source.
Both MoD and IAF are confident there are "enough safeguards'' built into the project, which includes "performance-based logistics'', to ensure India "gets the best machine, spares and product support".

WOW !!! Putting all eggs in one basket ?
We have many eggs now and in multiple baskets. Some in Russia, some in France, some in Israel, some in the US and some in DRDO.

SNECMA JV = ?

(Please correct figures if wrong)

French hand and head in Indian ''Ghee''.
As for the Snecma JV, GTRE has requested the govt to release $2.5Billion initially.

Some copy-pasting from my side. ;-)

There are all sorts of stupid arguments being presented here: aid, bribe, a few million dollars of cost difference, etc. Unfortunately none of that is true - not in this case.

There are 4 main reasons favoring Dassault:

1. Technology transfer: that the Eurofighter consortium would have never agreed to. Any technology given to India would invariably go to Russia because they are co-developing another 5th generation fighter jet Sukhoi-FGFA. Considering Eurofighter had some orders from US, this was always a no starter.

2. Expertise: Indian air-force already uses french build Mirage aircraft and so this would reduce training cost.

3. No supply to competitors: Dassault deal would come with a class that no such supply would be made to China or Pakistan. Eurofighter on the other hand was supplied to Saudi Arabia whose air force regularly trains with Pakistani air-force.

4. Political reasons: India's interests have recently not always aligned with EU's interests. And buying Eurofighter would have required negotiation with 4 different European nations. On that other hand, Dassault was clearly struggling financially, and so is Sarkozy politically. This gives India better negotiation hand.

Btw, Indian parliamentarians may be corrupt to the core, but the defense minister Antony is kind of known for his integrity (surprising since he belongs to Congress, the most corrupt party in India). I am not sure if they could have afforded to allow bribes considering the amount of fire the Indian govt. has come from recently because of so many corruption case exposures.

5. France was the only major western nation not to impose sanctions on India after 1998 nuclear tests. Why would India buy crucial equipment from countries that are unreliable partners. India wouldnt want to risk procuring parts ( just as Pakistan is discovering with US ) from a consortium of partners each of whom have a political agenda to push, during a difficult and crucial time.

That's just HAL SNAFU!

First Jet in 2017-2018 - then 6 jets a year for 3-4 years maybe? Which means by 2021 IAF will ONLY have 18+(6X4)= 42 Rafales. By 2025, IAF will have 42+ (20X4) = 122 Rafales - And all 200 Rafales will be ready by 2029!! That's just -----ed up induction speed!

now three tenders are left:
1. 80 jets additional MRCA,
2. Indian Navy jets.
3. 40 SFS jets tender.

Some country is going to be bankrupt big time trying to match us.
First let them have some money in their banks....
