The OP (ToI article) talks about AK-47 based rifle, and Saurabh Jha's Tweet talks about Excalibur. Are we talking about the same thing here? I know OFB has its own AKM based rifle which looks rather different from Excalibur.

Very confusing.

No, they are different.

Indian Public Sector Units really need to understand the importance of presentability. While there is a huge new item announcing the manufacture of a homegrown brand of rifles, they could not as much as release some official pics or a simple infographic of how it is beneficial over the current AKs. China learnt the art of presentability quite soon and they can hold a world class show of their products. Also there was this case of a slightly worn MCIWS in the 2014 defence expo. Stupid of them if you ask me.

The funniest part is the media, cutting, pasting & photoshopping whatever gun images they find on the web to go with their article....

Kunal, I believe MKU or some other company supplies picatinny handrails for INSAS on custom order. Do you have any pictures of it ?

Ordnance factories bag order for 30,000 carbines

New Delhi, February 5
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has placed an order for 30,000 carbines for the country's para-military forces with the state-run ordnance factories which will come as a major boost for the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

Ordnance factory officials from the unit at Tiruchchirappalli, while at the recently concluded Defexpo 2006, said besides the 5.56-mm indigenously developed carbine the OFB had also developed a wide array of small arms, including a "bunker buster" rifle that will soon be tested by the Army.

The officials said the 5.56-mm indigenously developed carbine had been approved by the Home Ministry following extensive tests. The order for the 30,000 carbines would be executed by the ordnance factories at Tiruchchirappalli and Kanpur and the Rifle Factory Ishapore. The carbines would be used by paramilitary forces like the Border Security Force (BSF) and Seema Sashastra Bal (SSB).

The carbine is based on the basic design of the INSAS group of small arms developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). While the Army has accepted the INSAS assault rifle, it had sought certain changes in the design of the carbine.

Kunal, based on that somewhat stilted translation of the Vietnamese idea, is it saying that the Chinese really consider the INSAS 1B1 a good rifle, superior to their own ? Or am I losing something in translation ?

Traditional design and Bullpup have their own cons and pros, 1B1 however has better Iron sight and design ..
