Fighter jets will land and take off for the first time from aircraft carrier Gorshkov rechristened INS Vikramaditya next month as part of aviation facility trials of the ship scheduled to join the Indian Navy in December.

Sea trials of the ship have already started and aviation facility trials considered to be the most critical trial of an aircraft carrier to test all aspects of flying will see Russian pilots deploying MIG-29Ks and MIG-35s for the purpose. The carrier worth over 2.3 billion dollars will have two squadrons (one squadron has 18 to 20 jets) of MIG 29Ks when it arrives in India mid next year.

Stating this here on Thursday, Navy officials said the Russians will check navigation, radars and landing facilities at the warship in presence of the Indian team. Indian pilots will start flying from the carrier after the ship is handed over after all mandatory checks sometime in October.

However, a team of Indian pilots is already in Russia to oversee flying operations by their Russian counterparts, officials said, adding the Indian Navy is already flying MIG-29Ks from its shore base in Goa.

Officials said the Russian Government has formally accepted the ship from the shipyard which refurbished it and after the Russian experts have tested all the operational facilities of the carrier over a period of next two and half months then the Indian Navy will accept delivery of the ship.

Expected to reach India in July next year, the carrier will have a 1,500-strong crew including officers and non-commissioned personnel. Weighing more than 45,000 tonnes, the ship will have helicopters besides a squadron of indigenously designed and manufactured Tejas light combat aircraft.

Vikramaditya trial from next month .
Props to the Russians for actually completing the renovation. But why are flight trials starting so quickly? I would have thought they'd be having shake-down trials of the actual ship for at least a few months, pushing the ship to explore its limits and any defects that might be yet undiscovered.

Things such as true top speed, whether she lists to either side when at full aviation and main fuel capacity, extreme handling during torpedo avoiding etc etc. I remember seeing a video of USS George W. Bush being turned so violently during her trials I thought she'd tip, and that was before flight operations began, I sincerely doubt any such maneuvers have been done with Viky...

I know it Gorky isn't a new ship, but its barely been a month since she started trials... Anyone know what's up?

The Indian Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the Vikramaditya, has headed into the Barents Sea for second-stage sea trials
The Indian Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the Vikramaditya, has headed into the Barents Sea for second-stage sea trials, as part of its refit by Russia's Sevmash shipyard, Captain Vadim Serga of Russia's Northern Fleet information service said on Monday.

The Vikramaditya, formerly the Soviet Union's Admiral Gorshkov, has finished a long-delayed refit for the Indian Navy at Sevmash on the Kola peninsula. The ship was extensively modified to undertake STOBAR (short takeoff but assisted recovery) operations with MiG-29K naval fighter aircraft, as well as receiving new air defense, communications and navigations systems.

The Vikramaditya is currently successfully undertaking the second round of shipyard sea trials, during which the ship will test its main systems, main and secondary power systems, communications and navigation systems," Serga said.

The ship is being operated by a Northern Fleet crew, many of whom have experience with carrier operations on the Russian Navy's Admiral of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov. Also on board are Sevmash shipyard specialists and Indian Navy officers.

The crew includes Northern Fleet aviation personnel, who test the carrier's radar systems, air defenses, communications and air direction systems.

India and Russia signed a $947 million dollar deal in 2005 for the purchase of the carrier, but delivery has already been delayed twice, pushing up the cost of refurbishing the carrier to $2.3 billion.

The Vikramaditya - as the Admiral Gorshkov - was originally laid down in 1978 at the Nikolayev South shipyard in Ukraine, launched in 1982, and commissioned with the Soviet Navy in 1987.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, an Indo-Russian joint venture, currently being built in India, will soon be delivered to Moscow.

The decision to supply the missiles to Russia comes after a meeting between Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony in New Delhi.

India, has already inducted BrahMos into the Indian Army and Navy, and is urging Russia to induct the 290 kilometer range missile.

Rogozin, who was visiting the BrahMos complex in New Delhi, was briefed about the capabilities of the different variants of the Indo-Russian missile.

BrahMos was conceived as a joint venture between India and Russia in 1998. The air version of the BrahMos is still in the development stage.

Meanwhile, Antony has asked the Russians to keep to the delivery schedule of the aircraft carrier Vikramaditya which is now on sea trials after a refit at Russian shipyards and is now expected to reach India by July 2013.
