They may have had planned something on the lines of Entebbe or maybe in a coordinated attack the SG would infiltrate by land and engage the Taliban while NSG arrives by air to take over the rest. Something or the other, who knows..
300+ Taliban armed with heavy weapons with no CAS? Secure the airport, land a plane with NSG and do a Plane HR as well ? All this while the Pakis are monitoring the airspace and SIGINT and probably have a ISI/SSG team on the ground as well.

Ha, seems too much. But don't think the uniformed Pak troops would have engaged Indians forces if it had ever happened. Too much pressure internationally...But I think even if our guys had got the Taliban it would be nearly impossible to save the aircraft, let alone the hostages.

@AVINASH4061 sir, during the AFS Pathankot attack, when the terrorists were cornered into the woods in or at the perimeter of the AFS by DSC, Garuds and NSG, was it the right call to let NSG finish the job of eliminating the terrorists? AFAIK the NSG were brought in case there would be hostage situation near the family quarters of the AFS and to defuse bombs and boobytraps they may have left behind. Wouldn't the mandate here of eliminating the terrorists be for the Garuds and not the NSG. If I'm not wrong the terrorists were cornered in a secluded part of the AFS away from strategic assets and civilians. Also the Garuds theoretically are especially kitted with weapons to deal with such situations whereas here the NSG would theoretically be more suited in case it was a hostage situation or in a built up area. Was it done since at the Garuds are a relatively unproven force or are they really incapable of doing so or a case of higher ups not understanding how to employ resources properly? There has been criticism and support for the decision to use NSG for this task instead of the Garuds in this thread in the past , so hence it would be nice to hear your practical input. Thanks in advance.

1. The biggest problem in this country is the mandates of the organisation are not defined clearly.
2. Also when a situation comes where in there are chances of earning medals and fame, the top officials across the spectrum go berserk.
3. Protection of airfield and air assets is absolutely the responsibility of the GARUDS. But, how capable they are is again a question. No offense but I as an ex SOF soldier fail to understand the fact of on GARUD sustaining 6 bullets in his abdominal area( Thank God he survived). The turf was our, the layout was known to us yet......
4. So when the org incharge fails to deliver, the obvious next step is to hand it over to the capable one. Whether calling NSG( where the HITs were all composed of PARA, SF guys and no infantry or other arms) was necessary is again a question.
5. 1 PARA,SF was right next door. So many battle hardened guys. And believe me I know how good or bad are the urban fighting drills on either sides. That includes SG too. Everwhere it's the PARA,SF guys, doesn't matter what organisation they are posted in.
6. I rest my case here.

2 PARA that time. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, esp when commenting in a forum like this.
