He sounds just like our guys who said after the IPKF Intervention in Sri Lanka that LTTE guys were fit enough to be SF. And remember Charles Beckwith at the time was in 5th SFG and MACV-SOG as well

same bhai, not since 2008 though, I used to search for images and info related to Indian SF so saw this back in 2015 and follwed it till I thought I should also take part in discussions I had a lot to say. Are there any other interesting threads here too? Cause I only check this one

The U.K. is a tiny country really, the entire British army is around ~70,000 these days, that’s less than even 1 corps of the Indian army

SAS/CAG and even DEVGRU are very small in number and very small communities hence why they cross pollinate very easily and make changes much quicker. Indian solution is always to throw numbers at problems- I remember after pathankot and 26/11 the knee jerk response was to increase the manpower strength of Garuds and MARCOs respectively. Some reports after Pathankot said Garuds were doubling their strength

It partly makes sense why Garuds intend to increase their numbers after Pathankot since the airbase only had 20 Garuds and they had to prioritize protecting critical assets over going after terrorists. DSC personnel are not of much avail of course

But what justifies Marcos to bump up their numbers. Correct me if I'm wrong but Marcos had a few hundred commandos stationed in Mumbai but only sent <20 operators citing it wasn't their playing field. Unless they changed their operational strategy to handle such ops or on the lines of SEALS/SBS in the aftermath, a leaner force is always the better approach

Wiki doesnt know shit. Here's how I can confirm. I've read various news articles where it's cited MARCOs are best in the world...15 reasons why so and so. They are the ones who say MARCOS are like Navy SEALs so they might be 2000. Journalists in India suck!

Now pulling Navy's official records, they never told how many MARCOs are there but wait a second. Through enough research you'll know this -

Now according to various sources, IMSF was undermanned during IPKF and these requirements od 38 officers and 300 some sailors was a goal to be met for INS Abhimanyu. To increase personnel, in 1996 they also started deputing technical officers for 3 years and technical sailors for 5 Years. This was called MARCOs (Basic) and is now discontinued.

After Kargil, the sanction was raised to raise another MARCO unit. By then MARCOs were stantioned in Vizag and Port Blair in small numbers, and so in Kochi. It was a slow process and met earlier than 2016 only

Also irconically, the Navy did increase MARCOs. Instead, according to my sources, the Para Units who are training with MARCOs for beach workups could be used in conjuction with Ghataks to be used as Marine Recons during Over the Beach Assaults.

Lastly with the numbers, that of INS Abhimanyu discussed before, keep in mind that many of their officers and sailors went to Vizag after that and even to Port Blair and Kochi.

Lastly I am going with a CLAWS report over aby world defence review and so on. Bedi (2015) - whatever that is, suggests that MARCOs are numbered 1000-1200, but Lt Gen PC Katoch in his book stated that could be the Navy's Mandate. The Navy currently in 2016 had less than 1000 MARCOs. Also one guy I knew who's a diver told me that MARCOs are smaller than Para SF, usually one battalion of Para SF is how much strengh in numbers they have in total for MARCOs. It makes sense to say they're still 700

My estimate is around 1200 (support included)

support included then maybee your guess is correct, but the actual operators are less than 1000, around 700 ish. The strengh of Clearance Divers is around 1,500 or close I believe. Some are augmented to MARCOs as Chariot piolets or EOD Technicians
