Looks like the Garuds are part of Operation Kaveri, airlifting citizens out of Sudan. Also good to see some degree of Opsec being maintained by IAF by blurring the faces of the Garuds.
Looks like the person in the second image is wearing a decent Plate Carrier and a Dual-Tube NVG most likely the AN-AVS 9 received with the C130J-30s and is one of the pilots or flying crew.
Yeah it's flying crew not combat garud personnel just look at helmet its ballistic one
They are flying crew of c-130j Hercules

‘SF’ reduced to ground handlers? Yeah, the Indian military has no idea what SF are and the AFSOD/SOCOM fantasy is a pipe dream

+ the second image is of the loadmaster for the Herc, quite surprised that IAF has maintained (and even expanded) the technical capability of their loadmasters along Western/NATO lines this long after the C130s got into their hands. I would’ve assumed the aircrew helmets/tactical equipment bought as part of the original FMS package would have never really been touched.

It feels redundant to compare an Indian ‘SF’ to a contemporary (Western) unit but this is one of the few times you’ll get to see a like for like real world comparison where ‘but we’d do things better/differently in actual operations’ excuses don’t work

so, as usual, the difference is stark and shameful

Looking at the nature of this operation, I’m very surprised to see that the Garud personnel do not have their kit on.

Like I said- they are being used mostly as ground crew and a few for force protection

FYI the USAF has a specific team responsible for this exact thing (DAGREthat IAF is throwing ‘SF’ into.

DAGRE isn’t even a special forces unit, they are made up of USAF SF

in USAF, SF means security forces, basically military police

special forces in india are not treated as specialists but generalists. For the roles Garuds are charged with the USAF has at least 4 different specialised units that I can think of (DAGRE, CCT, PJs, STS)

that said, I agree that for this Op it’s crazy the Garuds were’t even wearing PPE let alone armed, wtf is the logic? Why even use combatants in this situation if they aren’t going to be able to even shoot back? May as well have taken some air india stewardesses. Then if they get caught with their pants down (some resistance is present) the subsequent scandal will be blamed on the govt not the tactical level officers making such stupid decisions
