1. You take out Hafiz Saeed, you indirectly cause a reorganization in the command structure, causing you to lose any asset if in place.
2. Same as above.
3. No point. That, a bomb attack, will only be a good PR exercise for them.
4. Not possible without compromising yourself internationally.

Ha Ha Ha .....
These are small level piddle operational tasks that fall within the preview of the operational command of a division or a Corps.... None of that justifies a SOD or a SF battalion being placed at command level.... any Ghatka platoon will do it...

SF operations for US or UK forces have different connotations where the SF commands are utilized to assist in attaining overall aims and objectives in conventional or nonconventional operations in an expeditionary manner or as a part of nonmilitary clandestine operations. West and USA have no conventional perspective post-cold war still NATO has a vast requirement of military dominance of Eastern Europe, Russian periphery, and third world country to remain in control of the existing world order.

Our strategic environment and perspective are quite different and so does our areas of Interest or influence. Operations such as preparation of battlefields, strategic surveillance, Recconsance are regular tasks for all our agencies because those areas are our neighborhood. They do not need aerial insertion, clandestine infiltration. establishment support bases etc to be obtained by Military SF as many other agencies are regularly seized with that task.

What we definitely need is to train our SF to seize or destroy enemy nuclear assets, destroy enemy C4I Systems, destroy HVT, Raid HQ, Raid and seize a VP or VA, assist friendly forces, control and restore a rebellion, Tacke high profile terrorist attacks, hijacks, hostage rescue etc....

Think bigger than sending the SF into Mushko valley......:daru:

RAW Special group for black OPs situated in UP
In 1981 the director General of security launched project sunray a colonel was asked to hand pick 250 of the India's most elite soldiers this was the most special group existence of this group was denied for years even now it's officer's and men cannot be photographed this group become RAW Hammer they would carry out operations which were too dangerous and secret and just too inconvenient for anyone else to touch the core of this Group is para SF the only time when people saw SG was after the assassination of indra gandhi in 1984 because there was No SPG at that time and IA army doesn't provide protection to politicians so one fine morning the power corridors woke up and found tall bearded men with no id's no badges armed with sophisticated weapons guarding the gandhi family till the time SPG took charge.

Why do you think that this multitude of camos is on display?
Its not because its SOD.

Multiple camo would attract me if they had Navy,AF and Army camo mixed but this is just any camo available in the market.

Most people dont know this but such camo is available in shops in J&K.

So i am not interested in this theory...new helmets..different camo..waah sod aa gayi..bullshit

Even some RR units have better helmets and gear than 10 PARA..doesnt mean they are SOD.

If that is the case then wont it be actually a good idea to have all the available ones mixed within the SF units.

I have had a feeling for some time now that is hotchpotch of camo for RR and SF is deliberate. I mean its not like they can't afford similar looking camo for every operator, chaps at LOC look very very uniformly dressed.

Its actually a very bad idea.It results in more friendly fire incidents.

The basis of a army is the discipline. The uniform is what is at the epicentre of it.Drills, uniform and discipline show how good an Army you have.

The reason why LOC units have uniformity is because they are infantry battalions with their ethos of discipline and uniform still there in place.

RR and SF have been given freedom coz of the level of stress they are handling. There are some units that are 24 hours in operation.

So if you put extra stress on the uniform also it leads to breaking up of human beings which results in suicide or shooting incidents.

I guess this is the reason you see a PUBG kind of a RR and SF unit.

I don't know... It's not about ironed clothes orbpolished shoes. Maybe they get to choose between Patka and ACH.
But camo pattern is in the hands on higher authorities. What coloured clothes they are being issued will have no effect on their morale.

You all guys are unnecessarily fretting over and hazarding too many guesses on different camos. It is just a consequence of inadequate scales and authorization.

RR Units or SF brave hearts are given two pairs per year, That gets torn out rather early due to the nature of their Field employment and constant usage. The soldiers then have no choice but to pick a few from the markets. It is obvious market does not provide only one pattern.

Soldiers in a cold place like the Valley will be seen in all assorted dresses and patterns because more than half of his gear is bought by him from the market particularly sweaters, jackets, caps, balaclavas, rain ponchos, boots, and mufflers...

Officers can not even tick off their men because of the moral dilemma. Soldiers need all that and the government does not provide it..... operational effectiveness is of supreme importance there rather than camo discipline. Remember guys the Bravehearts are not posing there for photo-ops..

1. Basically what you’re saying is same as saying US should not have killed UBL because they will lose some “assets”. Then what is the use of having those assets in the first place if not to enable you to cut the head of the snake ?
3. Full point, we kill 100s of yahoos. Put the fear in them that no matter where they take shelter they can’t be saved by porkies . Make the cost so high that they will think twice before picking up a gun and shouting allahu akbar.

Why do you think that this multitude of camos is on display?
I don’t know, you tell me. Or better yet ask the operators themselves.

destroy HVT, Raid HQ
Which is what I told, Hafeez Saeed isn’t an HVT ?
You are contradicting yourself.

This is a contradictory statement....Operational effectiveness always goes hand in hand with the camo discipline.

The purpose of camo is to look like a team..to have the unity without looking rich or poor buying different sets of clohtes and for the most important purpose of identification.

The fault is not of the jawan as you said he is only issued less than his needs. The Army needs to standardize camo across all platforms and execute it as good as it does it in peace location with the same number of supplies and zero complaints.

Another problem to be addressed is that the civilians in J&K should not be allowed to purchase or sell IA camo. There have been so many attacks in army cantts using this.

The initial advantage in any fidayeen attack has been stolen by terrorists using the same shops to buy clohtes.

Look at all the kashmiri terrorists wearing the same camo and even patka in the pictures they post.

Suggest a SF doctrine. Employment and utilization.
You donot make a doctrine for a regiment. SF are one among many tools of our defence machinary and each one of them have thier own importance. And as far as their employment and utilisation is concerned then they should be a part of an intelligence group as their sword arm as well as going for recon and surveillance ops, and for those ops you donot need SF in huge number but you need to convert three or four units of SF to SOF and equip as well as train them in the best possible manner such that they are master of their craft, be it, recon or hostage rescue or foreign internal defence or sabotage or snatch and grab ops. The guys Manning these units have to be educated smart guys who can think and plan mission on their own if they need it( in short guys with excellent IQ levels). Rest of SF units can act as reserve and support units who provide fire power to them if and when they need it, they can be jack of all trades. And they can keep doing what they are doing but they have to be on standby to support SOF units when they need it because SOF units lack fire power and SF units can be armed with medium and a bit heavy fire power to help SOF in getting the mission done in a successful manner, and they can act as attrition replacement reserves as well.

General Lidder’s Dream : Joint Defence Space Agency Needs To Be Upgraded To Joint Space Defence Command

By

Colonel Awadhesh Kumar, Veteran
The USA has become the first country to create the US Space Force as the sixth branch of the US armed forces distinct from the Army, the Navy. the Air Force, the Marines and the Coast Guard. This move has not caused much concern around the world except in Russia and China. However India has probably just noted it down quietly.
The National Defense Authorization Act passed by the American Congress has now become a Law of their country. The President has signed and approved for Fiscal Year 2020, $40 million for Space Force operations and maintenance. It is estimated that about $13 billion would be spent in the first five years with effect 2020 to establish the Space Force.
The USA has established the Space Force knowing fully well that weaponization of space is a violation of UN resolutions. The UN General Assembly Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was formed in 1959 to govern the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity. Finally the Outer Space Treaty was approved by the General Assembly and it entered into force on October 10, 1967. All Countries became Party to the treaty and recognized the common interest of all mankind in the progress of the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
The treaty calls on all members to “refrain from placing in orbit around the earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons” and forbids the “establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications.” The United States of America is also a party to the above Treaty. Thus the creation of the US Space Force and America’s intention to deploy military forces in space have seriously violated the above treaties on outer space.
The quest for a Space Force for the USA had commenced when Ronald Reagan,in 1983, had started the Strategic Defence Initiative for developing anti ballistic missile defence system to destroy incoming missiles. Now USA has commenced raising a separate defence force Space Force, in spite of stiff resistance by the USAF, with declared intention of defending itself against all military threats from Space.
The US Space Force with its mission of DOMINANCE IN SPACE has certainly become a threat to all the major World powers right from the word go.This Force will not only aim to protect its own satellites, but will certainly strengthen its capability of detecting other countries’ activities and launch military strikes from outer space. The USA has already shown its perfect COWBOYISH GUN SLINGER behaviour by its Afghanistan and Iraq invasions, misadventures in Syria and confrontation with Iran.
Even if the above move does not trigger an arms race and threaten current Strategical stability, inevitably countries like Russia, India, China, Japan and France will have no choice left but start improving their defensive actions in space. The Government of Japan has already approved a record defense budget for fiscal year 2020 totaling $48.5 billion, which includes strengthening the country’s defense capabilities in outer space and cyberspace.
NATO, a lackey of USA has already declared that Space is the fifth operational domain for NATO, alongside land, air, sea, and cyber. So no wonder Putin, forced by the American and NATO move, has said “ the situation requires us to pay increased attention to strengthening the orbital group, as well as the rocket and space industry as a whole.” And every one is sure that China will not take all this lightly and thus has already started accelerating its own space based weapon systems.
So where does all this leave India. Presently it will take more than a decade for the USA to deploy any Space based threatening combat capability. India since the days of establishing the Thumba Rocket Launching Station has dedicated its Space Mission for peaceful development of Outer Space for the entire mankind. However if any other country develops space combat capabilities and deploys weapons in space, then India too must prepare itself to replicate the technology of the Mahabharat Days and be ready accordingly.

As per the current situation, India too needs to carry on with the further development of its ongoing anti missile and anti satellite weapons, both in very advance stages and demonstrated to the whole world, so that neither friends nor enemies remain in any doubt.
Adding to the already existing the Research and Development domain, India must also develop a suitable and adequate command and control organization for Space Warfare. A major task of this Defence Space Agency Organization, initially will be to formulate effective strategy to deal with all kinds of feasible threats from outer space.
All the required structures must be in place in the next 10 years. The combat capable defensive weapons must also be ready with suitable tactics for deployment and use. Deployment of offensive weapons may follow as per international situation, a decade later.
It is not that India has been sleeping over the issue, otherwise World would have not be able to see the ASAT test conducted by India last year. Prelim work was going on quietly. Around 2003, a space cell was created within the Air HQ. Then in 2006 came along a Chief of Staff to the Chairman Chief of Staff Committee ( CISC ) with great vision.

General Hardev Singh Lidder formulated the futuristic plan for an Integrated tri services Space Agency including DRDO and ISRO with aim to establish a full fledged tri Service Space Command on the lines of Strategic Forces command. Had it not been for General Lidder, by now we would be having just an IAF Space Directorate or something to that effect.
In spite of all the road blocks, General H S Lidder had his way but only in the form of an Integrated Space Cell against a Space Agency. This was due to sudden change in the Government. The Government of India which had ordered the conduct of a combined Nuclear & Thermonuclear tests was once again in the old “ Dhoti Shivering “ mindset …..what will the rest of the World say or feel.
The Integrated Space Cell comprising the three Armed Services, DRDO and ISRO scientists was established under the HQ IDS to oversee the security of India’s space based military and civilian hardware systems.
When appointed CISC, Lt General H S Lidder, Colonel of Parachute Regiment and an ex Commanding Officer of 9 Parachute Special Forces, may have had a feeling of being deprived of the post of an operational Army Commander. The power of COMMAND over nearly a quarter million All Ranks is quite heady. The post of CISC ( equivalent to Army Commander / VCOAS ) also lacks all the military Pomp and Show.
However as an Army Commander or even the VCOAS, he would have been simply deprived of such visionary role and could not have achieved goals having such far reaching futuristic implications not only for India but the entire world. It so happens that at that time while posted at the Army HQ, from the side lines whatever was observed by me, I can say that this achievement of General Lidder was just one of the many major achievements.
The Integrated Space Cell, even in its nascent stage had begun to utilize more effectively the country’s space-based assets for military purposes and to look into threats to these assets. All space technology including assets began to be leveraged, achieving closer cooperation and coordination among the Services and Civilian agencies.
Warfare per force is getting increasingly dependent on satellites for all kinds of communications, aircraft and missile guidance, navigation even at Squad / Platoon level, recce both at tactical and Strategic level and a continuous need of 24×7 …..surveillance. At the same time Satellites have become essential for purposes such as weather forecasting, civil communication, ground and air navigation, agricultural purposes, town planning and most important disaster management. Therefore it is of utmost importance that apart from protecting India from all threats emanating from Space, all our Space based assets also remain protected 24×7.
It actually took a few more years for the Indian Defence Forces to formally announce the establishment of an Integrated Space Cell. When the Chinese demonstrated their capability in May 2010 by shooting down one of their own 10 years old polar orbit weather Satellite, the Raksha Mantri Shri A K Antony had to announce the Space Cell. For a change, he said that “ while India remains committed to non-weaponization of space, emergence of offensive counter space systems and anti-satellite weaponry posed new threats which had to be countered.” Till that time only Russia and USA had demonstrated this kind of expertize.
The creation of the Defence Space Agency as envisaged initially by General Lidder was finally announced by PM Narendra Modi, along with the Defence Cyber Agency and the Armed Forces Special Operations during the Combined Commanders’ Conference on 28 September 2018 at Jodhpur. Just six months later on 27 March 2019 India carried out its first demonstration of Anti Satellite weapon technology by destroying a satellite in a low orbit altitude of 300 km. Immediately till now “ blind” Americans and NATO became alarmed because of the “ extensive “ debris created in space by India. Without wasting time the fourth country in the World to demonstrate ASAT technology, stated that this capability was a deterrent and was not directed against any nation.
In 2006 and 2007, India had tested its first exo atmospheric interceptors. India had therefore begun to work on its ASAT soon after the 2007 Chinese ASAT. It is presumed and is beyond doubt, that India is currently working on directed energy ASAT weapons, co-orbital ASAT weapons, lasers and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) based ASAT weapons. The ability to protect space assets from hostile electronic and physical attacks has to be developed by India at all costs.
The Defence Space Agency is still in a downsized form. The Defence Imagery Processing and Analysis Centre located at New Delhi and the Defence Satellite Control Centre in Bhopal already form part of the DSA along with other assets slowly building up. While still forming up, the DSA conducted its first simulated Warfare Exercise in Jul 2919 namely EX INDSPACE.
The overall supervision was exercised by HQ IDS. It was aimed at formulating a Space Warfare Doctrine based on which the DSA will develop the warfare Strategy and later the Combat elements when formed will develop the tactics. Indian interests in the Outer Space, on the moon and Mars will be fully protected.
The Defence Space Research Agency, the scientific organisation responsible for developing space-warfare systems and technologies for the Defence Space Agency was also approved by the Indian government in June 2019. The DSRA is composed to undertake research and development in close coordination with the HQ IDS.
Now the Chief of Defence Staff has taken over his responsibilities. He needs to start working to ensure that in the near foreseeable future the DSRA becomes a fully integrated component of Defence Space Command when the current Defence Space Agency gets upgraded to the next level.

Mission Impossible: Bats Team From 9

By Colonel Awadhesh Kumar, Veteran Special Forces

(Palali Airbase, Jaffna 26 Oct 1987) ……Tension was mounting every minute and so was the pressure. Forget failure, now even a few minutes delay in securing the objective would result in a solid embarrassment for all. Stink would rise, all the way from Jaffna to Udhampur. This simply was unacceptable. The BATS TEAM from 9 had landed in PALAlI all the way from UDHAMPUR just the previous night and in less than 14 hours had forced itself into this first mission. Due to the peculiarity of the mission, the squad comprised officers only. Britto, AK, Thapa and Sengupta or simply the BATS The rest of the Team, that is 100 odd JCOs and men were not to be involved.

Palaly Airbase……. Also HQ Northern Command Sri Lanka
(Siachen)……..In Jun ‘87, Major Virender’s Company, 8 JAK LI, had succeeded in capturing QAID Post and renaming it BANA. Now Pakis were furious and Brigadier Pervez Musharraf (future President), SSGian, had been tasked to lead OP QAIDAT with two SSG battalions and additional forces to recapture BANA. Satellite / aerial photos showed hectic activities around KHAPALU, the Pak Garrison down the SALTORO RIDGE on the other side. In early September ’87, the Indian Army in response initiated OP VAJRA SHAKTI to ensure safety of Siachen. 9 too moved out of Its base for an Operation planned to be executed incase OP VAJRA SHAKTI faltered.
The War Zone
(somewhere in Kashmir Valley Aug 19787)…When Col Tej Pathak finished his briefing, there was Pin Drop Silence, finally the tension was broken by Britto saying ” Sir can we have one last Evening Out “. We did go for an outing, topping it up with a few rounds of Cocktails (whisky/ rum were passé) and a lavish LAST MEAL in a Five Star Hotel. Next few days passed at a frenetic pace, checking, re checking and re – rechecking weapons, equipment, rucksacks, drills etc. Then at 0330h, one fine morning, Varni woke up all of us (what the heck was he doing at this hour…..Jagdish Shonti kept asking for several days) Troop Commanders and citing BBC news of the hour, announced that BANA Post was safe, OP QAIDAT was a failure. There was loud cheer all around….quite prematurely !!! Within 72 hours we officially received a Stand Down and next few days we had real fun with few liberties taken. So then it was the turn of our Tiger to morph into a PHANTOM COLONEL. The training regimen which followed ensured an unanimous view among all of us that we should seriously plan to cross over and place ourselves at the disposal of the KHAPALU Garrison Commander !!! Jokes apart, it was such realistic periodic training activities that enabled 9 to prevail upon the LTTE. The Nick name given to IPKF by the LTTE was…. BIDI MAMAs. However 9, 10, and 1 were referred as AK MAMAs.
(Palali Airbase Southern End 26 Oct 1987)……..BATS went over the outline Plan once again but lack of a Map of the area and absence of a Sketch of the actual Objective was a serious hindrance in planning this special mission of utmost importance. The clock was ticking and the pressure building up by the minute. Earlier while talking to officers of 10, we had casually gathered some useful information about the objective area, though they remained unaware of our mission, after all it was matter of prestige/Izzat. Finally we moved, in a light vehicle borrowed from 10, in broad day light at 1100h, fully armed with round in the chamber, straight towards the target area. We knew that only audacity, speed and surprise would finally matter.
(Udhampur Oct 1987)……Phantom was finally happy with the JUNGLE PATROL and so the orders came for move back to ‘Denkali ‘. On 12 Oct ‘87, around 1500h, I entered my quarters at Udhampur and turned on the TV, first the Door Darshan and then Pak channel (those days there were only two channels). The news reader on Pak TV was saying” Indian Para Commandos have been totally surrounded and outnumbered. Heavy fighting is going on. Further details are awaited”, and then suddenly the electricity tripped. It was a totally stunning news…here we were back to base, then who all went in ? My mind was full of our units recently aborted mission. There was pride too that now Indian Military was capable of planning and taking DIVERSION and DECEIT to such levels!!!. At the same time there was feeling of anxiety and despair for the trapped Para Commandos of 1 or10. It was not before 2100h when the DoorDarshan News clarified the matter by talking about Jaffna University Heliborne action. Over next three days we receivedmore details courtesy the SF cell at Army HQ. It was certainly a disaster for 13 SIKH LI and even our 10 had lost six troopers. The Link up mission led by Lt Col Dalvir and subsequent extraction action by Nair’s TEAM together with Col Dalvir was classic. Of course the Officiating 2 IC, Major Sheonan Singh or Shastriji (his code name in Lanka) too was there (he used to be everywhere) as he had tagged along with the TEAM.

The Phantom Colonel
(Army HQ Jul 1987)……Things started limping back to normal at Udhampur. I too started looking for packing material etc as I had to move to Devlali on posting which had been issued two months back. I was informed regarding this posting by Major Ashok Tasker, at the entrance of South Block, New Delhi (I was on a longish temporary duty in connection with the creation of Commando Cell). To top it, I had just stepped out of the office of Military Secretary 2 (MS2). Request from our Tiger for posting in of volunteering officers for probation and few other things had been conveyed. The MS2 probably seeing the security card dangling around my coller offered tea and jokingly asked me if I too needed any posting !!!!! While Major Tasker was taking his first steps towards becoming the future Judge Advocate General of the Indian Army as for me this news of first posting out of unit after having spent 9 years since commissioning was rather ” terrifying ”
(Palali Airbase Northern End 26 Oct 1987)………..As the Jonga came to a halt, out stepped the BATS. We were now in general area of the objective. There was no time for a detailed reconnaissance, we had to take chances with a quick short one. Britto and Sengupta moved towards the Northen side while Self and Thapa proceeded towards the Southern end. Five minutes later the squad was back at the jonga. After quick exchange of notes Britto again decided to go for a confirmatory reconnaissance and therefore moved with self and dashed virtually right thru the middle of the target area and the two were back at the jonga in less than two minutes.
(Udhampur 26 Oct 1987)……. Annual Regimental and Sports events due for period July- October was now being completed with vigour. 24 th Oct was my last working day with the unit. At 1600h, I reached the football field as I was to be the Referee for one of the inter team football match. To my surprise not a soul was there. Wondering, I proceeded towards Bravo Team Lines. I was relieved to see Thapa coming towards me. He seemed to be quite excited and blurted out….sir we are off to Jaffna tomorrow morning….. I casually enquired” who all” ….. B TEAM less a Troop with one Troop of Charlie led by Sengupta and you too sir. ” So now I was once again the 6 Troop Commander and also the Officiating Team 2 IC, since Britto was now the TEAM COMMANDER. Major Ranjit Singh the Team Commander had just been Struck of Strength two days back on his posting to a high altitude area. The next 12 hours were spent checking everything of my TROOP and then the TEAM including the 9 TROOP from C TEAM, zeroing of all the weapons and also attending the Officers Mess Party to dine out Major Ranjit and celebrate promotion of S K Varni to Acting Rank of Major. During the Mess function Britto too was promoted to Major…..probably the first BREVET promotion in the Indian Army after the British Era …a prerogative of the Commander – In- Chief only, now duly taken over by OUR TIGER with reference to none. Britto kept wearing the epaullettes andbecame a Substantive Major in December 88. The Self Styled C-In -C also Thumbed his Nose at the Military Secretary’s Branch. After issuing several threatening signals to the Unit/ CO for my forth with move to Devlali and added was Anil Singhals forthwith move to NSG, the MS in the end just gave up.
(Udhampur 25 Oct 1987)……….Next day very early in the morning there was a unit Mandir function and by 0530 h we were inside the Udhampur airbase. It was there at the airbase when the Tiger Growled saying” Indian Army has now dialled 9 for assistance, now go and rescue them “. Everyone was quite excited to visit a foreign country and that too without a passport or even a visa and imagine the excitement had we known about the VCRs and all modern electronics awaiting us !! The 10 PARA set back was at the back of our mind but we all were hoping that IPKF would at least leave some last mopping operations to be done by us also. Then four dots appeared on the horizon and soon four AN 32s were lined up on the Tarmac. In less than an hour, one by one the aircrafts took of and BATS were on their way to Jaffna.
(Palali Airbase Southern End 25 Oct 1987)……..There had been a refueling halt at Nagpur and then at Chennai. At around last light, the four AN 32s had finally taken off from Tambram with the bearings set for Palely…….the Sri Lankan Air Force base in The Jaffna Peninsula and also housing their HQ Northern Command. As we neared the island after a 45 minutes flight and the aircraft went for its final descent, we could see flashes and flares going up in the distant sky….the last of the battles for capture of Jaffna was going on. At last the tail door opened and we stepped out. What a sight….. It was quite dark outside and there were aircrafts and helicopters parked all around, scores of them, various types, both military and civil. We started unloading quickly with every one talking in whispers…..till we heard our names being called out loudly. Then the silhouette of SHASTRI JI was visible and we ran to him, enquiring if everything was ok with him…..he replied in vernacular that he was not a ghost and very much alive and kicking!! We were also told that we could talk loudly or even shout in case required ….LTTE was far off. However a bigger foe ie Jaffna October Rain could descend on us any minute with devastating effect.

Britto (extreme Left),Awadhesh (next to Britto) and Sengupta (cig dangling) of BATS
As advised the TEAM unloaded all four aircrafts in quick time, loaded the vehicles provided by thoughtful 10 and Major Sheonan drove us, parallel to the runway to 10 PARA location at southern end of the airbase. Tents came up quickly and everything tucked in. Then our boys were taken to company langars by men of 10 and BATS were similarly given a warm welcome by Lt Col Dalvir Singh and all the officers in the Officers Mess. After a drink or two we also witnessed the famous debate of 10 ….. which is better for the Rajasthani warriors Cow’s milk or the buffalos milk…… There was vertical divide with each side boasting equal numbers, rank didn’t matter. Later on when 9 moved to Vavunia and I got left behind with 10 as part of AD HOC HQ SF, I remember even our Commander, R K Nanavatty too at times listening to the debate. Much much later on meeting General Sheonan Singh, I did enquire about the final verdict of the debate and he said it was still inconclusive. I have yet to ask General Dalvir Singh.

General Dalvir Singh
(
Palali Airbase Southern End 26 Oct 1987)……..It was only towards midnight that we were able to get back to our tent. Early morning around 0500h, Thapa went out of the tent and we heard his relieved voice” oh, there are the DTLs ”. Hardly two minutes must have passed when suddenly there was heavy firing all around …..actually it was outside the perimeter of the base. Next minute Kanchha came rushing inside, cursing LTTE …” you can’t even go for a crap”. By the time we all decided to rise and shine, it was broad daylight. On coming out, we realized that it was next to impossible for us green horns, fresh from the Mainland, to quickly adapt to the war zone and utilize the facilities of the DTLs, even when those reserved for Officers were neatly sign posted !! For the benefit of those, unaware of things military, DTLs are Deep Trench Latrines.

Can You spot shastri ji in the gang

Maj Gen Sheonan Singh, Nephew of Shaeed Bhagat Singh…….. Shastri ji
By the time were sited our TEAM’s tents, readied the ammunition storage area etc, Col Arjun Katoch and officers of 1 PARA came to welcome us and also updated us on the situation. Heavy breakfast followed but it was a mistake. Now pressure started building up, it was then when the idea flashed that Divisional HQ certainly must be having better facilities. That’s how BATS landed up planning the first mission.

Ashwini Cheema, Britto and Thapa of BATS mission
(Palali Airbase Northern End 26 Oct 1987)…….The longish building where BATS were standing housed the Operations Branch. As you entered from the door on the northern side, there was a big hall taken up by the General Staff of Operations and Intelligence up to Grade 1 level including the sitting area for Brigade Liaison officers. Then was a biggish conference room, followed by a room for Colonel General Staff, the Deputy GOC and in the end the General Officer Commanding. Then was a very small hall and finally the exit door on the Southern end. There was a covered path to another building quite small in size……this was the actual target…..the bathroom with all the facilities but exclusively for the General and may be the Deputy too. This facility was in fact an extension of a bigger building where lived the GOC.
Without wasting any time Thapa and self-took position at the southern exit while Sengupta took up post at the door of GOCs residence. Now no one was going to be allowed to come out of the two guarded doors, no matter what happened. Then as with everything in the Army, as per seniority Britto had the first privilege. Being a SF mission, with clock wise precision, in less than 15 minutes, the squad commenced extraction. Soon we were standing in the office of the Colonel General Staff, Col Hoshiar Singh, a paratrooper who had also served in 9. Required report along with the news of Udhampur given, we started back for own location. This is how the BATS completed their first mission. By evening the first of the War Despatches was on it’s way to Udhampur. On reading our exploits Tiger must have become jittery because in less than a month he too descended on the Island with rest of the unit 9. This resulted in S of BATS moving to C TEAM and Ashwini Cheema joining us. However as BATA sounded too gross we again became the BRAVO TEAM. While in Sri Lanka, at times we used to discuss among us …what would have happened in case had simultaneously,General Harkirat Singh also decided to use the Southern exit ?
(Vavuniya Airbase Jun 1988)……The business accounting principle FIFO (first in first out) got applied to me and I moved out of the unit sometime in mid-1988. Col Tej Pathak after three and half years of command moved out for higher command course as a first step in becoming a lt general later. Col H S Lidder took over as the next tiger. The unit remained on the island till the final withdrawal and came out only in march 1990 leaving behind 13 of our comrades forever mingled with the soil of Sri Lanka.

Information from someone very senior in an Indian (private) defence company.

multiple SF teams deployed in active ops are trailing out their new uniforms with in-built elbow and knee pads. They are working with the operators to get the materials and stitching right, this has been a complaint from NSG that has been trailing out similar uniforms as well as combat shirts

AFSOD is a reality and is already operationally deployed.

SPG are the most kit-savvy defence customers (know what they want and are up to date on all latest equipment) and they are present at pretty much every expo, they have an ability to buy as they like. This is followed by NSG. Mil SFs have procurement offices that are largely run by non-SF personnel. They haven’t had any experience with AFSOD yet so can’t say if the situation is different for them.

More autonomy is being given to the NSG hubs to buy what they need individually as opposed to having to go through the NSG’s HQ in Delhi.

The problem of delegation to Base Commanders is that we have numerous small orders with no uniformity & consistency.
Very true but there are pros and cons. It allows lessons to be applied immediately and for specific unique tactical environments to be met with bespoke solutions.

as long as the stuff they provide confirms to basic NSG standards and is from an approved list from NSG HQ there’s not a huge concern- this is generally how these small specialist units operate; they can buy pretty much what they like.
