It's not going to be an AK variant.
What's wrong with a Bulgarian or Russian Ak with all those Spetsanaz stuff? Only Galil Ace and SIG offers weapons in 7.62x39 .Comparing the cost & reliability Aks with rails and collapsible butts are fine.

Agree with you on Russian AK ,but have to differ on the rest.Nowadays everyone right from CZ,Beretta,FN to Giloba is offering weapons in 7.62x39mm .Cost and reliability is debatable because most of the weapons are new and the Russian AK is not cheap .

Since the last 2 years or so, the RFI/tenders are very detailed and specific in IA and IAF. Navy's procurement documents were very specific for a long time.

Earlier RFIs used to be very open ended.

Is my observation correct?
Indeed, this has been what I have noticed also, the military is certainly more aware of what they are looking for and are formulating RFI/RFP accordingly. Earlier the vague nature of the RFI/RFP led to lukewarm responses from OEMs and often offers that were nothing like what was needed.

Considering the LMG choice of SF ie Negev ,they could have selected something else..Ultimax 100 series LMG is couple of Kilograms lighter than Negev if SF wanted something in 5.56x45.Also UKM2000's modified version is only couple of hundred grams heavier than Negev, but packs 7.62x51 ammo ,plus just like PKM it could be mounted on vehicle platform or defensive platform a capability Negev doesn't have.Instead of putting all the eggs in Israeli baskets SF could have checked on other parts of world too.

@ALBY If IA is serious about 7.62 NATO as the standard issue rifle then you would need a 7.62 MG. You are correct about Negev as it is the go to LMG for SFs. So the possibility of Negev NG7 ending up in IA seems fairly high. Especially after this Punj Lloyd "coup".

Negev comes in 7.62X51mm calibre also and will be made in India, by far the best option if any foriegn LMGs need to be imported, doesn't make any sense to be importing any other small arms at this point other than what is availble from IWI or OFB/DRDO unless it is super specialist (like a long range sniper rifle).

Media claiming it's happening for first time.

I think it must be happening behind wraps.

They are confusing themselves, it is the first time such an ex has taken place in Kochi but NSG-MARCOs ops have happened many times in the past.

This question has been gnawing away at me from some time now. I want to know what is the SFF currently doing except for training hard. I mean, I don't want/need to know op details but, what use are they as of now. AFAIK, the purpose they were originally raised for has been nullified by the GoI from quite some time. And now, our traditional SF's (PARA SF, MARCOS, GARUDS) are almost equal to the SFF if not better (atleast I think so and I may be wrong). So what do SFF personnel do all day other than train considering that almost every major operation is handled by the traditional SFs (atleast to the public eye). Or is it that SFF personnel are deployed within traditional SF units as well. However, knowing the Armed Forces a little bit, I would consider that highly unlikely.

So, basically, what is the use of the SFF in the current Indian security scenario ? Seniors, please help.

Pretty much everything what other GD and SF troops doing. SFF units can be classified as Special Forces such as 1st Archer unit and the others are Airborne units.

So apart from manning several important Posts including the High altitude posts they are deployed in Counter infiltration grid but just as BSF they come under overall command of the Army.

And then there are elite mountain warfare units such as 5th Vikas.

Their SF units ops are classified just as Para SF.

I consider the fitness level of both Para SF and SFF operators on par withPara. However the training module and mandate of Para SF is much more than SFF. For ex Diving and other courses etc
=================================================================

This operator belong to 1st Archer (Cdo) unit of SFF. You can figure out the terrain by yourself i don't need to mention it here. But one thing i can tell you that he was personally involved in Raiding a Paki Post and made a mince meat out of them, this incident is not a very old incident. And you can take my word on this.

No. There is no race/ caste base recruitment in Para. These are all Composite units. Even the Regular regiments have separate composite units. For example in Dogra Regiment there are Ahir (Yadav) and Jat troops.

However since many Para units are raised or converted from regular infantry battalions.

So

1 Para has a large number of Sikhs

21 Para has Marathas and troops from NE including Gorkhas.

10 Para has Rajastahani and Haryanvis

I think this allocation has also because these units are known for specific role and terrain that's why there are many Rajasthanis in 10 para. Their CO is on deputation in SFF and he is a Rajput from Rajasthan.

Similarly many local Kashmiri Musalman in 9 Para

SFF is the execution wing of RAW- It acts as a personal army of RAW- It works under PMO and doesn't come under Army command-

So even Army has little knowledge of their operations- It is like SF units of CIA-
