FYI: in US, Lapua costs $4-5 per round. A decent .50 BMG round can be purchased for as low as 99 cents. There's huge cost advantage for adopting .50 cal round. Both rounds can be used in sniping as done by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lapua is smaller and so more can be carried but it's not that much smaller. Also, 0.50 can be used against soft targets in addition to enemy soldiers. Fewer companies make Lapua rounds while .50 is easier to manufacture. Both have very identical long range stopping power but .50 cal has more recoil and rifles are heavier.
