I guess this RFI can be used by us for benchmarking whether the procurement procedure has improved lately.

If by mid 2018, we see the new sniper rifle on front lines it means that the procurement has been streamlined to an extent.

Other procurements fanboys may not notice but this one is for sure to catch the eye.

Army issued RFI for 5000 rifles..if every thing goes right RFP will be issued in June 2017...then manufacturer should supply army with 18 months period...
As of i know only two big brands of .338 rifles are used by most armies...SAKO is in most of armies inventory and other is Accuracy International...

Many of our sniper casualties are head injuries. Last year 3 rd Kumaon JCO martyred on LOC got half his head missing by Paki Sniper.

He was not even on patrol duty but inside the post.
How did that round penetrated into post...i think we need to use big caliber to put fear in their minds

The other RFI released along with sniper rifles is night vision scope for LMG.

Both RFI Has similar timelines.

For LMG one of the requirement is picatanny mount, but INSAS LMG does not have a picatanny rail. I wonder what does this mean?

I agree that weight and mobility aspect has its own merits; even high recoil could be an issue. But I think our doctrine should be versatile not rigid; by sticking to only one round snatches away the flexibility to surprise and engage enemy through different tactics. It would be better if we have a mix of snipers well versed with both .338 LM as well as 50 cal round. It may be their intent but unfortunately they might not have done so because bureaucratic hawks sitting in south block might question why to go for two type of cartridges and guns for same purpose !!
Hoping to see .338LM in IA service ASAP.. :)
IA uses Vidhwanshak too. So I believe, going by the numbers, .338 would be more used in squad level.

Don't know if it penetrated any structure on the post. But the posts have lot of open area. Pakis too have somewhat similar posts or small picquets. A lot of opportunity for a sniper.

It's not license produce...direct procurement..
Although 5000 rifles with 1200$ price with all accessories means 60 million$
Good presentation with picture if possible can u share the full document.......

There goes the OFB 7.62 sniper out of window. Anyway a good move I would say. But who would be the favourite contender around?
I think , this is the OFB sniper riffle

OFB Ishapore is Producing this riffle under license since 1963 ..................they just changed it's external Looks which is made of wood & some more modifications......................

Bolt action sniper rifles are best. Maybe Ishapore may produce a .50 cal Bolt action rifle centered around Ishapore 2A1.

You won't get a decent .338 LM for less than $4000 and good ones will cost even more. Remington which won the PSR competition is $15000 each along with ammunition. Barret MRAD and Macmillan .338 are more than $6000 without scope or ammo.

PS: Prices are retail.

.338 caliber is the new fashion in long range shooting so not surprising that IA wants to get in on the action. However from combat experience US SOCOM has recently issued a new requirement switching from .338 Lapua to newer .300 Norma which they feel may provide better long range balance. Even the .338 Norma is a better round than the Lapua as it has a much heavier bullet being sent downrange at comparable velocity.

BUT in either case for IA context...I have some reservations.

Firstly the rifles themselves will be frighteningly expensive (especially the Accuracy International models) along with the requisite high-end optics that are needed to go along with them.

Secondly the ammo is only available from a few Sanctions Prone sources and is quite expensive itself also. Remember that .338 Lapua is a "Match Grade" round which is made to quite precise tolerances and not mass produced (hence its reputation for accuracy). I doubt the MoD's current procurement apparatus can keep up with this type of situation where the ammo orders would end up in Single Vendor situation with limited availability and long lead times. IA may find itself with a large stock of white elephant gold plated rifles with no bullets

Let's not talk about price. We are very big nation and can afford them very easily.

We should buy the Best which should give Paki's a sleepless nights on LOC.

We are just buying 5000 units. I'll say buy 25000 if required. Every terrorist crossing LOC must know he might be in sights of Indian sniper.

As we all know ...

With out gun culture in the country, difficult to develop new gun tech.

If there was gun culture, demand would have taken care of gun tech advancement.
