Isn’t this just an emergency procurement and not the full deal (like the Negev order)? 6000 rifles would be one of the largest sniper buys in the last few decades and I’m assuming would’ve gotten a lot more attention
both NVD and snipers, when RFI was released it stated the total requirement but not the purchasing quantity.

after this RFI, commanders started buying snipers of their choice, which were barret, TGT and SAKO. this 6000 number seems to have come from the number of dragnov in service. this acquisition is happening is piece meal basis, not big numbers in one go, same as NVD, hence not getting highlighted.

and experimentation was also going between 7.62 nato and lapua magnum, it seems lapua magnum seems to have won the debate for now.

if and when some credible defence journalist manages to piece together the story of acquisition of sniper rifles, i suspect one of the conclusions we may arrive is that unlike yesteryears, this time field units had a say in what equipment they want, which goes against our common refrain that acquisition jernails imposed a particular gear on field units.

Sounds like complete dysfunction. This should be a centralised procurement with inputs from frontline units not piecemeal individual purchases- speaks to a complete dereliction of service at the top

Economies of scale? Standardised training? What are these exotic terms to the Indian military?

The way their centralised and standardised purchases get screwed (AK203, Artillery, Light Tanks, MRFA....)- maybe they take the easy way out in small arms? Use commander's discretionary fund to bypass the bureaucratic hurdle?
