When assaulting on enemy position its mandatory to have bayonet, Every man and his rifle counts.

That is why provision of bayonet is must on firearms excluding pistol and LMG.

Why bayonet for a sniper rifle..?

But sniper stay at long distances and provide cover to assault troops..why snipers need to charge like regular soldiers

SVD bayonet can also be used as wire cutter. Comes in handy especially in siachen where bayonets were actually used in hand to hand combat against Pakis while their posts are just below ours.

SVD is just a battle rifle with iron sights and mounted scope. A marksmen becomes a riflemen just by removing the scope.

OFB already makes 7.62x51 & 7.62x63 bolt action rifles. It can easily develop a variant firing 8.6mm round unless offcourse import itself is the first preference. Also can someone give me list of nations that have ordered 5000 bolt action 8.6mm sniper rifles? I will give a hint ::::::: NIL. This is another instance of ordering a 5 times costly weapon system not in mainstream use and only preferred in Defence Forums.

Lapua Magnum is not in mainstream use? You need to update your GK.
Its used by almost all western special forces, french, british and polish army.

Use of few snipers rifles in special caliber does not make it main stream use. Pls give the number of conventional caliber in use compared to inducted by these nations??

Indeed it's already in use in India. The Mizuram Arned Police is using four such rifles.

Ask them if they like it and if that is the case get more.

During the Vietnam War a US Infantry Division would have around 70 to 80 snipers. This seems also the number used in other foreign armies. Turkey for example got 350 such sniper rifles.

There is no semi-automatic .338 in market....338 rifle is used for long range sniping..and for accuracy at long range bolt action suits better...There is no news about replacing SVD's with .338...Probably SVD will be replaced with another Designated marksmen Rifle.
Whats wrong with the weapon itself? What cost to benefit ratio will India get from it?

Medium range sniping..? can you explain..?
.338 hits beyond 1000 meters..
.408 & .416 hits 1500-1800 meters
Medium range: Anything upto the maximum range of an infantry platoons weapon standard weapon capabilties
Long range: Requires a specialised weapon system with extensive training

Actually lot of sniping takes place in between 500 to 1000 mtr range. Extreme sniping at 1000 mtr + are very rare. In Indian context where most of Sniping would take place either in the pine covered range or the extreme height of Himalayan range even 600 mtr is good enough. This rifle too was just unveiled after receiving query from IA and ofcourse it would need work to finish off.
But anyway I am not complaining as .338 is a much more potent round then 7.62.
High altitude sniping takes place over 900m and way beyond, 338 calibre can achieve a first round hit but ideally now we've employed 8.59mm and on current weapon system can gain first round hits at 1100m and beyond with right training

What's your problem first? and what's your point?
My problem is it is waste of money when the weapon itself is stll good enough for the role it fills and that the point is it's more willy waving to show off about a new toy which simply isn't needed
