Guys breaking news

BALASORE: Notwithstanding international pressures India has secretly conducted the maiden test of its nuclear capable undersea ballistic missile, code named K-4, from homegrown submarine INS Arihant at an undisclosed location in the Bay of Bengal.

A reliable source on Friday told ‘The New Indian Express’ that the test conducted on March 31 nearly 45 nautical miles away from Vishakhapatnam coast in Andhra Pradesh was highly successful. The indigenously developed weapon with a dummy payload was reportedly launched from the submarine in full operational configuration.

KILLER K-4
Intermediate Range SLBM

Operational Range – 3,500 km

Length – 12 meter

Width – 1.3 meter

Weight – 17 tonne

Warhead – 2,000 kg

Engine – Solid fueled

Accuracy – Near zero CEP

The trial was carried out with the support of the personnel of Strategic Forces Command (SFC) while the DRDO provided all logistics. The missile was fired from 20-meter deep and it pierced into the sky after breaking the water surface. INS Arihant had first successfully fired a prototype of K-15 (B-05) missile in November last year.

The K-4 missile was fired from onboard silos of the ship submersible ballistic, nuclear (SSBN) submarine demonstrating the capability of the newly built underwater warship to fire long range nuclear capable missiles and the killing efficiency of the most advanced state-of-the-art weapon system.

I think its real news because i read this in BR few days ago

data point from bosporus ship spotters - so Arihant induction should be any day now.
28-March-2016
The Black Sea Fleet’s salvage vessel Epron has completed her taks of supervising the acceptance test of India’s first SSBN Arihant and returned home.

With picture of ship.

So it seems that K4 was finally of Arihant's test and now Submarine rescure ship from Russia will go home.

Congrats to all including drdo, IN and Russians for great job.

“Having an operational range of nearly 3,500 km, the missile was fired towards north for a shorter range. It covered more than 700 km before zeroing on the target with high accuracy reaching close to zero circular error probability (CEP),” informed the source.
Looks like they dont want to annoy any except Pakis and Chinis therefore DRDO kept the range at bear minimum of 700 kms giving it impression of K15 test..........

another interesting info

INS Arihant had first successfully fired a prototype of K-15 (B-05) missile in November last year.
this is interesting, as news have been coming in that 5-6 submarine ejection tests were carried out.

Looks like ATV Arihant perform better then what the designers have expected.........:india::india:

The testing sequence after the reactor went critical had been very hectic and lots of submarine trials and weapon release trials were done. Had all the tests not been very successful, we wold not have been in a position to induct this ship any time from now. Yes, things went well and better than what anybody would have expected. Congratulations to scientists and Indian navy.

All our SLBMs will henceforth will not be fired with Minimum energy trajectory but only with depressed trajectory .Congratulations to all the people who are involved in the K-series program development. Now if only they could provide us a pic of K-4 .
Can you provide a link for the minimum energy trajectory? A great development.
It is what I always suspected that missile ranges are greater than claimed. This means k4 missile range is also understated?

Usually depressed trajectory is to evade bmd
But in a naval launch would this be a factor?

Missiles flown on a depressed trajectory can have significantly shorter flight paths, and therefore significantly shorter flight times, than those flown on a standard trajectory of the same range.

me thinks this is porky specific for the time being given the reported ranges of around 3500km.
launch zone will be in the
this is handy for
1. clean cut nuclear 1st strike like taking out airbases with enemy aircraft's being primed with nukes and waiting to be launched
2. short time-of-flight (STOF) nuclear attacks on targets be it during 1st strike or 2nd strike
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY counter to porky tactical nukes , a missile fired in a depressed trajectory will reduce the reaction time of the porkis to retaliate as the flight time is much lesser and the missiles whose trajectory has been lofted re-enters with higher velocity and at steeper re-entry angles and hence lesser fight time from re-entry to impact compared to when launched in a minimum energy trajectory . near instantaneous retaliatory strikes will enable MAD to remain viable by enforcing measured graduated retaliatory nuclear response so that the porkis don't go all suicidal .

INDIA can counter porky blackmail by adopting or threatening to adopt a launch-on-warning policy easily enforceable on the ground by the STOF capabilities coupled with high accuracy of this missile.

porkies can bluff with tactical missiles, what India will do is raise the stakes , this will complicate things for porkies in many ways ,militarily to finance to international pressure etc .
they are facing pressure on tactical nukes we just keep piling up the pressure by the introduction of another complication.

in future application of these on longer range missiles will be able to spoof the BMD of china etc
basically a BMD Fire Control System observes the usual trajectory of a ballistic missile to identify it as a threat. Shaping the trajectory confuses the FCS and the threat might be ignored by it resulting in not firing the interceptors.

Rule out porkies from here.
Their small tactical nukes are not even worth attention.
INS Arihant is for power projection.

INS Arihant is for power projection across the globe. Did you watch thread and news of American Security Concerns on Arihant? :biggrin2:
Where is that thread?? any link pls

All well and good until we reach MIRV's, how does one test MIRV's in depressed trajectory.

Is that even tested with dummy warheads?

You have to balance the variables in testing in depressed trajectory the lift and drag force , re-entry heating , burnout parameters etc Once the vehicle has reached its pre determined apogee which will be lower than minimum energy trajectory the RV (Re entry vehicle ) trajectory now depends upon gravity . Now there are two ways for depressing trajectory is to depress the trajectory early in boost phase by turning the missile through a larger angle . This difference in angle will be accentuated by the effect of gravity dependent bending the trajectories over the course of the flight this is known as symmetric . The other way is is to follow a standard MET trajectory until the missile reaches altitudes at which the atmosphere is rarefied then missile can then be turned to flatten the trajectory this is known as shaped trajectory. As far as K-15 is concerned it flied in a shaped trajectory like a hypersonic missile with apogee of 40 to 50 Kms extremely dangerous .
It cannot use MIRV in such low apogee shaped trajectory . I don't know about K-4 , when it will get MIRV then it will have to fly a symmetric gravity shaped trajectory with high burn out time for MIRV . Yes MIRV is tested in dummy warheads with same mass distribution and CG (Center of Gravity ) as the actual warhead .
