Why is the navy buying these!?No, I mistook the numbers.
22 is for Coast Guard and 120 for the IN.

Counter opinion: focusing on PSCs alone will lead to a top heavy navy (like USN) forced to send PSCs for benign/ LIC missions for which they are wholly inadequate and deprive IN of assets that should have been used elsewhere. My views only:
IN should not procure NGOPV. In the past, it was okay to procure Sukanya class and after that Saryu class. But we should have stopped at that.
We already have one of the largest coast guard fleet which operate similar vessels then what is the point of IN operating the same. Better sense would have been to transfer the Saryu class to ICG which have been operating Sankalp class since last decade. Now, even ICG is going to procure NGOPV. We will be having 13 similar vessels distributed in between IN and ICG with 11 for Navy and 2 for Coast guard. This doesn't make sense.
IN should focus on procuring vessels with more firepower instead of going with OPVs.
Fair points sir jee.Counter opinion: focusing on PSCs alone will lead to a top heavy navy (like USN) forced to send PSCs for benign/ LIC missions for which they are wholly inadequate and deprive IN of assets that should have been used elsewhere.
OPVs serve best in Anti Smuggling/Anti Piracy missions, where we see Trikand/Tabar going.
Economy of Force is an important facet. And no the ICG cant be sent because of differing laws that govern the two forces.
Sukanya class could be fitted with better weapons in times of need to serve as corvettes ..can the same be done with saryu if need arises and is it still a requirement?Counter opinion: focusing on PSCs alone will lead to a top heavy navy (like USN) forced to send PSCs for benign/ LIC missions for which they are wholly inadequate and deprive IN of assets that should have been used elsewhere.

Sukanya class will be retired within this decade. I don't see the need to upgun the Saryu class. They have a different role to fulfill as mentioned by Binayak sir ji.Sukanya class could be fitted with better weapons in times of need to serve as corvettes ..can the same be done with saryu if need arises and is it still a requirement?
This is only a justified position if the IN’s mandate is once again external security/power projection. After 26/11 the IN’s remit was officially changed to include coastal security. The ICG is in a position to resume their place as the net security provider for Indian shores now. If the IN are buying OPVs to patrol Indian coastlines that is an issueCounter opinion: focusing on PSCs alone will lead to a top heavy navy (like USN) forced to send PSCs for benign/ LIC missions for which they are wholly inadequate and deprive IN of assets that should have been used elsewhere.

IN is using Saryus to patrol the entire approaches to IOR. From off Djibouti and Horns of Africa to Malacca and A&N.This is only a justified position if the IN’s mandate is once again external security/power projection. Yeas - but not what you are thinking (missiles and the like) they are repurposed for mine clearing, ASW work, and the likeSukanya class could be fitted with better weapons in times of need to serve as corvettes ..can the same be done with saryu if need arises and is it still a requirement?
Let Macron visit India, I'll wait till thenSo, what do you guys make of the statement of work by MDL regarding subs?
Are these same designs!?Today, DAC approved Multipurpose Vessels for IN.
IMO, these will join the other 2 vessels which are already being built by L&T. There was a requirement of 4 vessels of this kind.
6th is not good enough.
Yeah, looks like that will be the case. Are these same designs!?
We will be in top 5 by 2030 and in top 4 by 2035. Though we are aiming for #3, it will only be possible after 2045.6th is not good enough.
