Israel's Rafael Set To Win IAF's SDR Contract

Israel's Rafael is set to bag Indian Air Force (IAF) 's contract for
software defined radios (SDR) to be installed in all IAF aircraft in
the future. Navy too has shown interest. The pilot project is for
400 SDRs and later around a 1000 SDRs are to be ordered, for this
more than a billion dollar contract. These radios would enable all
aircraft (transport and fighters) to be connected digitally/
electronically.

In February this year the shortlisted candidates were announced,
who were IAI and Rafael, who were in competition with BEL and
Tata-Rockwell. Rafael was L-1. BEL did not get its Radio and
Tata-Rockwell could not meet certain parameters in the RFP, for
which they asked for a period of 6 months, which was not granted.
To be noted here, that those parameters were not met by the Israeli
companies also. The contract was announced 2 years ago.

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Indian troops have arrived in Russia's Lipetsk to take part in the joint Air Force exercise Aviaindra 2014, held August 25 to September 5, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Igor Klimov told the press Monday. "From August 25 to September 5, 2014 a joint Russian-Indian exercise Aviaindra 2014 will be held on the Russian territory under the Air Force commander- in-chief's leadership. The official starting date of the drills is August 29, 2014. Before that, the Indian pilots will examine the areas of the upcoming flights and practice piloting skills on modern simulators in the Lipetsk State Aviation Center, while anti- aircraft personnel will familiarize with anti-aircraft missile systems in the Air Force Training Center in Gatchina [Leningrad Region]," Klimov said. The drills' scenario involves joint flights with mixed Russian-Indian crews on Su-30 SM "Flanker-C" aircraft, Mil Mi-35 "Hind E" and Mi-8 "Hip" helicopters at Pogonovo and Ashuluk testing ranges in the Voronezh and Astrakhan regions respectively. Su-30 SM "Flanker-C" crews will also carry out air refueling from the Ilyushin Il-78 "Midas" aerial refueling tanker while the mixed anti-aircraft teams will repel a simulated aggressor's attack with the S-300 (SA-10) "Grumble" and S-400 (SA-21) "Growler" anti- aircraft systems, the Buk-M1 "Grizzly" surface-to-air missile system and the Pantsir-S1 (SA-22) "Greyhound" surface-to- air missile/anti-aircraft artillery systems. On July 17-19, Russia and India conducted the joint naval exercise Indra 2014 in Vladivostok. The Indian fleet included the INS Ranvijay destroyer, the INS Shivalik frigate and INS Shakti fleet tanker. Russia deployed the Varyag guided-missile cruiser, the Admiral Vinogradov destroyer and the Peresvet large landing ship.

I was just wondering when the IAF & IN pilots will go for joint exercises with each other?? I understand IAF gets a lot of exposure from the foreign Air force exercises like Red Flag & Cope but IN fighter pilots dont and they would benefit immensely by flying with/against mock battle scenario's with IAF's finest!!

I know IN pilots are trained partly by IAF but since they have started training on their own Hawk's I think the connect should be there between the two forces pilots. Firstly coz they will have to co-ordinate in future battle scenario's and secondly coz exchange of fighting doctrines is always a good thing especially since IN does nt have a TACDE of its own. Third reason is IAF & IN will share common platforms like Mig 29's and LCA's so makes sense!

No matter what fighters the IAC's or Vikramaditya carries but the IN pilots need to excel and interactions and air exercises with IAF should be encouraged and made a norm every year!!

India to train Vietnamese pilots to fly Sukhoi fighters

New Delhi is also considering the sale of BrahMos missiles to the Southeast Asian country, although no deal is imminent.

India and Vietnam are likely to sign a defence agreement, under which Vietnamese pilots will be trained to operate Russian-built Sukhoi fighters, sources in the Indian Defence Ministry told RIR. The agreement is likely to be signed when Indian President Pranab Mukherjee visits the Southeast Asian country in September.

The details are being finalised during the on-going visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Vietnam, the sources said. Vietnam had earlier asked India to train its defence personnel in using Russia-built Kilo class submarines along with the Su-30 fighters that the country uses.

By 2015, Vietnam will have a fleet of 36 Russian-manufactured Su-30MK2 fighter jets. The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates a fleet of Su-30MKIs, air superiority fighters jointly developed by Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Malaysian pilots have also been trained by the IAF. Last year, India agreed to train 500 Vietnamese submariners to operate Kilo submarines that Vietnam will receive in 2016 from Russia.

India will also consider the sale of the Indo-Russian BrahMos missiles to Vietnam, although a deal is not imminent, the sources added. They said Vietnam is keen to procure these missiles to combat a potential military threat from China. Relations between Hanoi and Beijing have cooled during the last few years because of disputed islands on the South China Sea, which are believed be rich in energy deposits. China claims territorial ownership of the entire sea and its islets and has similar disputes with many of its neighbours.

Seems like a good idea. IN also needs some combat experience ,exposure too. Why we never sent Viraat for RIMPAC like exercises?

Jaipur: Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shashank Shekhar, who has been declared a deserter by force, has been caught by the Border Security Force (BSF) near Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan's Anoopgarh while allegedly trying to cross the border. Shekhar, who hails from Ambala City, had hidden some documents and his passport in his shoes which have been recovered. Security agencies are now questioning Shekhar. He was posted at Ambala Air Force station in neighbouring Haryana from where he remained absent from duty without leave from October 24, 2011. He was declared a deserter in December 21, 2011. The officer was apprehended from Sadanand Shantanand Asharam, Haripurakalan, in Dehradun on May 11, 2012 by the IAF and police. He was then brought to the Air Force Station, Ambala around midnight on May 12 and was medically examined. The officer was later placed under Air Force custody and three officers of the Ambala station were put on duty as escorts. Around midnight on May 13, the officer pretended uneasiness and suffocation and requested the escorts sitting outside the door of the room to allow him to come out for fresh air. On being allowed, he ran away from the Air Force custody. The two escort officers chased him. However, Shekhar took advantage of the darkness and grass and managed to give a slip to the escorts. His act of escaping from custody is an offence under Section 51 of the Air Force Act, 1950.

An Indian Airforce AN-32 plane carrying 11 persons on board crash landed at the Chandigarh airport at around 8.30 pm on Saturday. It's believed that the collapse of the plane's under carriage led to the crash. The plane caught fire after landing, and a few passengers received minor injuries. The runway is currently blocked and airport personnel are clearing the debris.

Fighter aircraft for Thiruvananthapuram station

The Indian Air Force (IAF) station here will host more military aircraft, including jet fighters, in the coming days, senior air force officials said on Tuesday. The increased military activity, the officials said, was a sign of the IAF fast-tracking its strategic doctrine to exert a stabilising influence over the Indian Ocean from the straits of Malacca to that of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest sea routes. The Southern Air Command (SAC) was the pivot of India's emerging "look east" strategy, they said. The bulk of the world's trade, including a lion share of its oil shipments, passed through the IAF's sphere of influence. The threat to international maritime trade from pirates and armed non-State actors could not be discounted. The IAF's 17th Forward Base Support Unit (FBSU) here would be the staging area for the Southern Air Command's operations. However, fighter aircraft were unlikely to be based here permanently. Officials said the bulk of the SAC's fighters configured to undertake maritime tasks, including surveillance and defence, would be based at its airbases in Thanjavur and Sulur in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The bases would also be home to unmanned aerial vehicles, mid-air refuelling tanker aircraft, and advanced Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACs). Currently, the SAC has integrated all civilian and military radars. The integration has helped the IAF monitor in real time all air activity over peninsular India, which has unusually high civilian air traffic. Its fighters also regularly practise to operate without disrupting civilian traffic to counter military and unconventional threats from the air.

Any news about HAL HJT 39 Advanced Trainer?
Or the HTT 40 Basic Trainer? HAL wanted to weaponize it. It would have been nice to strap on ELINT pods on them and hand them over to BSF/ITBP to man the borders until our UAVs mature.
