Why rafale is a Big Mistake- bharath karnad article in 25th july indian express a must read for people expecting IAF to bring home the trophy with rafale.

As per the article The cost of east rafale is expected to be above 209 million dollars per piece with short maintanence contract!!!!

Thts why it couldnot win a single contract from countries that have more GDP per capita than india like brazil, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, south korea, Singapore.

Uk is getting 5th gen F-35 vertical take off landing version at a much lower price of 165 million dollars per piece !!!!

An additional order of 50 or 60 Su-30 MKI with robust funding and expansion of production line and manpower in R&D, production makes rafale deal superfluous for IAF.

Rafale will add another logistics line for IAf at a prohibitive cost!!! Even the French airforce is cutting down rafale orders for its air force !!! and expects Indians to pick up the bill.

The deal is a financial disaster for IAF and sound the death knell for the indian mil aviation industry with useless order numbers for tejas mk2!!! On the same lines marut was retired with a token order number from IAF.

Arun jaitley taken aback by the cost of deal asked for numbers to be reduced to 80 and IAF accepted in a jiffy, showing that there is no deep strategic need for rafale!!!

the three tier ai force structure advocated by IAF(all of a sudden after 2004 when NDA govt opened up the straight 126 mirage-2000 request by IAF into MMRCA tender fearing corruption allegation!!!)

So there was no need for the three tier air force as late as 2004 and now all of a sudden we need a three tier airforce!!!

Rafale is nothing but a financial disaster waiting to happen to IAf which will drastically reduce IAF squadron strength (because we could induct 5 tejas mk-2 for th ost of each rafale!!!)

There is nothing that rafale can do on its own that can not be done by Tejas mk-2, Su-30 MKI and the future FGFA.

This is why indian weapons need reservation.because ten only proper and timely funding will be delivered to indigenous projects with full service backing . other wise the same Arjun vs T-90 and rafale vs tejas mk-2+Su-30 MKI saga will repeat again and again leading to fading away of any hope for indian mil aviation industry.

The civilians at the top never understand that all the so called deep TOT deals are mere humbug. because no one deliver their cutting edge techniques to the other guy for a few fighters more purchase. It is their IP right and they will never part with it.

Despite the deep TOT for Su-30 MKI we are practically doing all the stuff for tejas mk-1 and mk-2 all by ourselves right from the nose cone to the sorting out the brakes issue.

IAF Chief Arup Raha takes over as India's senior most military officer

IAF Chief Arup Raha takes over as India's senior most military officer

IAF chief Arup Raha today took over as the Chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee from incumbent General Bikram Singh who is retiring on Thursday. The Chairman, Chiefs of Staffs Committee is the senior most military officer in the country. Raha was handed over the baton of the Chiefs of Staffs Committee by General Singh at a ceremony in South Block, Defence officials said. Raha, 59, will hold the office for a period of 29 months and would probably be the longest- serving officer in the chair. He has got the long tenure because of the resignation of former Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi in February after a series of mishaps involving naval warships. Raha will continue in office till December 2016 and is expected to push for increasing jointmanship among the three services as the CoSC. He is also expected to push for the creation of three new tri-services commands including Space, Cyber and Special Operations. The proposal for raising the three new formations is with the government for quite some time now and deliberations are being held between all the stakeholders for an early decision on the issue.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force deployed its C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft to transport a team of geologists and disaster management officials to Nepal for clearing the landslide in a river there which is threatening to cause flood in Bihar. A C-130J Super Hercules aircraft carried out a night landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Saturday and dropped a team of Geological Survey of India, Central Water Commission and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) there to assist the Nepalese Army in clearing the landlside in a calibrated manner, IAF officials said. The aircraft was launched at a short notice on the instructions issued by the Cabinet Secretariat to provide help to Nepal in handling the flood situation, they said. The Special Operations aircraft used its high-end technology equipment to carry out the landing in the tricky airport, where flights do not operate after dark, they said. The aircraft returned to India at 0330 hours on Sunday after accomplishing its assigned task, the officials said. Meanwhile, the IAF has deployed a C-17 heavy-lift aircraft with a team of 20 doctors and a mobile hospital in Purnea to handle the flood situation. The force has kept 14 aircraft on stand by mode to participate in relief operations, if required. "One Ilyushin-76 transport aircraft in Chandigarh, two An-32s in Agra along with two Mi-17V5 helicopters in Gorakhpur have been kept on stand by. Four Mi-17V5s have been moved from Baghdogra in West Bengal to Purnea in Bihar for relief operations," the officials said. A landslide in Nepal in Bhate Kosi river — a tributary of Kosi river in Bihar, has threatened to cause floods in the state and efforts are being made to clear the blockage in the river.

Replacement of Intermediate Trainer Planes of the IAF

The IAF conducts intermediate stage of flying training for ab- initio pilots on the Kiran aircraft. These aircraft will complete their technical life over the next couple of years.HAL, which has been developing the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT), as a replacement for the Kiran aircraft, has not so far been able to resolve critical wing and airframe Design & Development issues related to stall and spin. In order to meet the emergent situation created due to inordinate delay in the IJT project, IAF has already initiated the process for extending the technical life of the Kiran aircraft. The IAF has also initiated action to look for alternate options for the IJT. This information was given by Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley in a written reply to ShriNareshGujralin Rajya Sabha today.

NEW DELHI: Induction of women officers in combat roles in the Indian Air Force (IAF) now seems possible. The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, indicated this in an interview with India Strategic magazine (..:: India Strategic ::.. Home Page: The authoritative monthly on Defence and Strategic Affairs. ) when he said that their chances "in the near future are very bright." He pointed out that IAF had had already opened all branches for induction of women as Short Service Commission (SSC) officers, except in the fighter stream of the flying branch. "The probability of women pilots flying in combat roles in the near future is very bright," he said. Although it may take some time for the decision to take effect due to procedural approvals, including from the defence ministry, the air chief's statement is a clear indication that a positive decision has possibly been reached and could soon be announced. In fact, so far, women officers in all the three services "are not being deployed on active duty close to the border wherein they are likely to be exposed to direct line of fire" by an enemy. But apparently, in keeping with global trends and demands by women for parity even in combat roles, and also to make up for the shortage of officers, IAF, and then possibly the other two services, would gradually unleash them in the defence of the country.

IAF scouts Jaguar DARIN II/III full mission simulators

August 19, 2014: The Indian Air Force is looking to procure 1-3 Jaguar DARIN-III 'Fixed Base Full Mission' and 1-3 Jaguar DARIN-II 'Fixed Base Full Mission' simulators. The simulators would be used to impart realistic training to aircrew flying the Jaguar DARIN III/DARIN II aircraft. The IAF has stipulated that the simulators need to enable realistic pilot conversion training for phases of flight under normal and degraded modes in all flying conditions, including adverse weather. Basic flying encompassing all normal aircraft operations and procedures from checks before start up to flying a full mission profile and up to switch-off will be practised on the intended simulators, including emergency procedures and various failure modes. The simulators need to have the capability for insertion of multiple and various types of friendly and enemy aircraft in a tactical situation and intuitively project them on the tactical display, Radar, and Radar Warning Receiver as desired by the instructor. Capability for simulation of ground targets like class A & B vehicles, Surface to Air Missile (SAM) sites, ships, command posts etc, and the capability to network with other similar simulators. The IAF has also mentioned that given Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the lead integrator of the DARIN-II and DARIN-III avionics upgrades, vendors other than HAL would need to enter into an agreement with HAL to obtaining technical details of the Standard Operating Procedures of DARIN-II and DARIN-III upgrade aircraft.
