Nice to read your story sir... you must have worked for NHPC or for the Jayprakash...Brings back memories of my trip to Sang La in 1995--in my Fiat1100. The first telephone was installed in that area at that time. Sukh Ram ( the thief ) had come over in a chopper. The Baspa at Sang La was pristine. We were the only tourists--nobody had seen one in that area, except truckers and military/itbp.
The population of Karcham ( village at the bottom where Baspa meets Sutlej ) was 240!!!
ITBP had a mule train going from Rakcham, if I remember right. The border was 30-40 km away.
The NJPC ( Nathpa Jhakri ) was being constructed--blasting everywhere
Karcham, Rakcham, Sang La, Rekong Peo, the eternal search for the real Kinnerr Kailash ( at least 4 different ones were pointed out by the locals )
Now Kalaka - khab road of 480 km is being developed as double lane all weather road. the stretch Wangtu = Kalpa - Pangse - Moorang - Pooh is also being upgraded. In due course the road may emerge as an alternate all weather road..
Kinnauris are good simple folks.. and the area has developed well as compared to other hill ares. The population has Tibatan and Budhist influence but they all call themselves as Hindus..
Kinnaur girls are as white as snow and have very good features if long-nosed..
