They were the one who made loudest noise during Pokhran.

Completely true. And so far there has been no statement from Xi that he wants peace and tranquility restored at the border. It means that "teaching India a lesson" or "putting India in it's place" is still his objective. His is the only voice that matters from China. The rest are just implementing his decision. And right now all the statements by the Chinese Ambassador and the protracted army to army negotiations are nothing more than tactical moves to reach the primary objective of "putting India in it's place".

Back stabbing is a probably an inappropriate term here but the Australians behaved very rudely after Pokhran including throwing out Indian military personnel out of some training courses, making critical comments on the GoI and on the Indian people for celebrating.

Payback was swift, they had recalled their HC and wanted India to ask for him to be sent back ( same probably with Canada). They were told that they had recalled their HC and they can come back whenever they wanted, GoI wasn’t going to ask anything. The HC finally came back and soon after asked to speak to the PM. Was told PM is unavailable. Asked to speak to Dy.PM. Advani, was told unavailable. Asked to speak to any senior minister, same answer. Finally got the point and asked to speak to the Foreign Secretary. Was told too busy. When he asked in irritation who will he speak to, he was told that person in charge of specific geographical area including places like Fiji, Australia etc might meet him. Furious he sent his deputy, she promptly sent hers. An Australian Dy.PM had to make a visit of India ( he was the only one who hadn’t said anything adverse, their FM was not given an invite) and even he was not granted an audience with Vajpayee but post that visit, things eased.

That by itself is not important, the Japanese too were very critical and even though the GoI was tolerant of Japanese criticism initially because of their history with nuclear weapons, the Japanese too crossed lines in their reaction and GoI treated their ambassador with some harshness, he actually complained that protocol wasn’t followed. When Japan offered aid post a cyclone in Gujarat, GoI said that it’s official policy to accept no aid from Japan. We have come a long way from then in Indo Japan relations.

Most scandinavian countries who gave India substantial aid but also regularly sermonised all were told that their aid would not be accepted and all loans returned. Different time but a ruthlessly proud government then too.
