Yes, the standoff at the LAC will be a permanent reminder to all Indian politicians to take the Chinese threat very seriously. This will hopefully create urgency in a lot of areas - relook at our defence spending, our border infra spending, our foreign policy, development of Andaman/Nicobar, more nuclear submarines etc. It also gives us the freedom to arm Vietnam and other Chinese neighbors.

For many years, we were facing the threat of two front war, now the Chinese face the same threat. So thats progress in a way. Also the world now recognizes India as one of the few nations standing up to the Chinese, hopefully that will help us in getting permanent membership of the UN security council.

With India nothing is certain w.r.t India's attitude towards China.. Every man who becomes PM thinks he is the chosen one with the golden d**k and tries to change the adversarial relations with China into a friendly one.. Modi had a severe case of this disease. .While the bureaucracy in America, ensures that there is a continuity in the nation's strategic direction, the Indian bureaucracy is more interested in sucking upto the PMO for personal benefits, than helping bring about continuity.. Hence the bureaucracy during Modi's tenure was geared towards Jhula Jhuli as it was Modi that wanted it this way.. We dont even have a regular national security strategy Excercise..

We have to assume the worst and mobilize even more. If they attack, we are prepared. If they dont, then no damage done.

Wish IN would send some signals. For example, just board a Chinese merchant ship at Malacca under some pretext for a short time (say 15 mins). There will be some diplomatic fallout but some signal needs to be sent to Chinese that we will extend the scope of a border conflict and the war will definitely extend to the seas.

Why only two lane tunnel?

This looks more like a pathway to underground parking than a proper tunnel built for strategic purposes.

Himalayas are very young mountain chain. Most of the area is not tuff and consists of loose gravel. The wider tunnels can be made in Alps easily as they Grand Daddy of mountain chains, very tuff and strong. Build one road it will last long, tunnel will last generations.
Build one road in Himalayas, loose gravel will cover it by next season change and you have to do maintenance again.

I think he is right the area around F4-F8 is physically lost. Now LAC will be manned like this round the clock & no salami slicing will be possible. In case China tries something response will be given. But those 24sq km along F4-F8 is lost for the time being.

It is lost only if rest of Chyna relationship reverts back to normal.

On a serious note, go to google earth, pan your view towards the Chinese side of Pangong from F4-F5 ridge, then match the features visible on the picture as well as on the google earth.
