You have to consider the world as of 1970-71 when Nixon/Kissinger made that overture to China. The Vietnam war was raging, US losses were large and mounting. In aggregate in the Vietnam War, the US lost a total of more than 2200 aircraft of which more than 1700 were lost in combat. That included 31 B-52 bombers and 445 F-4 Phantoms. The micro-electronic revolution in military affairs would not become a reality for another 20 years which would give the US the lead in radar and missile technology. Stealth was a concept and a theory far from being a practical reality. And the USSR was a huge threat which could outproduce the US in tanks, aircraft and ships at technology levels that were at par. The Soviet Navy had become a true blue water navy under Admiral Gorkshov. In such an environment, opening up China and getting it onside was a very tempting proposition. It would forever divide the 2 Communist nations. Who could have foreseen the future 50 years down the road?
